    Othering others: Right-wing populism in UK media discourse on “new” immigration

    Right wing populism is on the rise. Through the use of othering, right-wing groups delimit their own identities while excluding others. The purpose of this chapter is to shed light on how European mediated public spheres (such as reader responses to media discourse) constitute an important domain of identity articulation and struggle through the discursive construction of the ‘Other’. In this case, the others come from the Central and Eastern European countries that are perceived as newcomers to Western Europe due to the consecutive enlargements of the European Union. Specifically, this chapter provides an in-depth analysis of 236 reader comments responding to one online article from The Telegraph that discusses “new” immigration from Bulgaria and Romania to the U.K., a result of the lifting of work restrictions in 2014. Applying methods of Conversation Analysis and critical discourse analysis (including relevant EU history and background), we expose numerous levels of othering in the data (e.g. othering those who disagree with right-wing political views, othering the EU, othering non-native speakers, othering migrants/Roma) and demonstrate the various strategies that are used to accomplish this (e.g. argumentation strategies, perspectivization, etc.)

    Conductivity of boules of single crystal sodium beta-alumina

    The ionic and electrochemical polarization characteristics of two boules of single crystal sodium beta-alumina (Na2O.8Al2O3), 2 cm in diameter, were investigated over the range of 25 to 300 C using 2- and 4-probe ac and dc techniques with reversible and ion-blocking electrodes. Textural (or internal) polarization at 27 C was present only in boule 1 which cleaved easily. Interfacial polarization, using solid sodium electrodes, was present at 27 C in the 2-probe conductivities for both boules. Cleaning with liquid sodium at 300 C reduced its magnitude, but some interfacial polarization was still present in the 2-probe conductivities for boule 2 below about 140 C. Above 140 C, with liquid sodium electrodes, the 2-probe conductivities, essentially polarization-free, were given by KT = 3300 exp(-3650/RT). The conductivity of boule 2 at 180 C remained essentially constant with increasing current density up to about 140 milliamps per square centimeter

    Examining and describing professional development and continuing education in the personal training and fitness industry : sites and issues of disconnect

    The following phenomenologically oriented study examines and describes the relevance and effectiveness of professional development and continuing education programs for real-world situations of personal trainers. The participants were personal trainers, facility managers, and persons involved in the accreditation process. Data collection took place in 3 phases. The first phase consisted of the participants completing the PUMP Questionnaire, followed by focus groups with personal trainers and interviews with managers. The study's 3 data sets required reduction via a content analysis by question, content analysis by existential categories, and further thematic analysis using the lived relation existential dimension. The discussion contains the salient sites and issues of disconnect between clients, personal trainers, and facility managers and how they might affect the personal training experience. The intergenerational disconnect emphasized between Boomers as clients and Millennials as personal trainers requires further exploration and dialogue and underscores the need for different approaches to content and delivery of professional development and continuing education experiences for personal trainers and managers of fitness facilities

    Empirically-Driven Multiwavelength K-corrections At Low Redshift

    K-corrections, conversions between flux in observed bands to flux in rest-frame bands, are critical for comparing galaxies at various redshifts. These corrections often rely on fits to empirical or theoretical spectral energy distribution (SED) templates of galaxies. However, the templates limit reliable K-corrections to regimes where SED models are robust. For instance, the templates are not well-constrained in some bands (e.g., WISE W4), which results in ill-determined K-corrections for these bands. We address this shortcoming by developing an empirically-driven approach to K-corrections as a means to mitigate dependence on SED templates. We perform a polynomial fit for the K-correction as a function of a galaxy's rest-frame color determined in well-constrained bands (e.g., rest-frame (g-r)) and redshift, exploiting the fact that galaxy SEDs can be described as a one parameter family at low redshift (0.01 < z < 0.09). For bands well-constrained by SED templates, our empirically-driven K-corrections are comparable to the SED fitting method of Kcorrect and SED template fitting employed in the GSWLC-M2 catalogue (the updated medium-deep GALEX-SDSS-WISE Legacy Catalogue). However, our method dramatically outperforms the available SED fitting K-corrections for WISE W4. Our method also mitigates incorrect template assumptions and enforces the K-correction to be 0 at z = 0.     The Influence of Subhaloes on Host Halo Properties

    Within the ΛCDM cosmology, dark matter haloes are composed of both a smooth component and a population of smaller gravitationally bound subhaloes. These components are often treated as a single halo when properties, such as density profiles, are extracted from simulations. Recent work has shown that density profiles change substantially when subhalo mass is excluded. In this paper, we expand on this result by analysing three specific host halo properties – concentration (cNFW), spin (λB), and shape (c/a) – when calculated only from the smooth component of the halo. This analysis is performed on both Milky Way-mass haloes and cluster-mass haloes in high-resolution zoom-in N-body simulations. We find that when subhaloes are excluded, the median value of (1) cNFW is enhanced by ≈ 30 ± 11 and ≈ 77 ± 8.1 per cent for Milky Way-mass (1012.1M⊙) and cluster-mass (1014.8M⊙) haloes, respectively, (2) λB is reduced for Milky Way-mass by ≈ 11 ± 4.9 per cent and cluster-mass haloes by ≈ 27 ± 3.5 per cent. Additionally, with the removal of subhaloes, cluster-mass haloes tend to become more spherical as the ratio of minor-to-major axis, c/a, increases by ≈ 11 ± 3.6 per cent, whereas Milky Way-mass haloes remain approximately the same shape with c/a changed by ≈ 1.0 ± 5.8 per cent. Fractional changes of each of these properties depend primarily on the amount of mass in subhaloes and, to a lesser extent, mass accretion history. Our findings demonstrate that the properties of the smooth components of dark matter haloes are biased relative to the total halo mass

So, given the extensive anticipated benefits of birth registration, there has been increasing interest from development organisations in implementing programmes on birth registration in countries with low rates of registration.But there is a significant lack of empirical research that explores the effects of birth registration, and if and how it benefits children in practice.Plan’s new research in India, Kenya, Sierra Leone and Vietnam reveals the results of an investigation into the impact of birth registration. What emerges is a complex picture of the interrelationship between children’s rights and birth registration. As a result, the report makes a series of important recommendations for governments and development partners
