    Data Mining for Learning Analytics: does lack of engagement always mean what we think it does?

    Context and Objectives Learning Analytics (LA) has the potential to utilise student data to further the advancement of a personalized, supportive system of HE (Johnson et al., 2013). A number of LA systems are now being developed but there have been few studies that have analysed the usage of Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) in order to identify which analytics techniques and sources of data accurately reflect student engagement and achievement. Methods The interactions of 66 students with a Level 4 programming module on a VLE have been analysed via the simple K-means clustering algorithm to identify classes of behaviour and their characteristics. Results Two prominent classes were found with students achieving higher marks attending the lectures and tutorials more regularly and accessing all types of material on the VLE more frequently than students in the lower achieving cluster. However, there were a number of exceptions that had low levels of engagement that gained high marks and vice versa. Discussion A student’s prior experience and characteristics of their degree programme need to be taken into account to avoid incorrectly interpreting high and low levels of engagement. Conclusions The number of times students view online module materials will be an important factor for inclusion in any predictive LA models but must be able to take into account the differences in student backgrounds, delivery styles and subject

    Anomalous coupling between topological defects and curvature

    We investigate a counterintuitive geometric interaction between defects and curvature in thin layers of superfluids, superconductors and liquid crystals deposited on curved surfaces. Each defect feels a geometric potential whose functional form is determined only by the shape of the surface, but whose sign and strength depend on the transformation properties of the order parameter. For superfluids and superconductors, the strength of this interaction is proportional to the square of the charge and causes all defects to be repelled (attracted) by regions of positive (negative) Gaussian curvature. For liquid crystals in the one elastic constant approximation, charges between 0 and 4π4\pi are attracted by regions of positive curvature while all other charges are repelled.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, minor changes, accepted for publication in Phys.     The impact of the Article 50 talks on the EU:Risk aversion and the prospects for further EU disintegration

    This article explores why there was no domino effect after Brexit and reflects on what this means for the health of European integration. It shows how the UK responded to the uncertainty surrounding the Article 50 talks by testing EU unity, prompting both sides to discuss a no-deal outcome. Evidence from Eurobarometer surveys demonstrates that attachment to the EU strengthened markedly during Brexit talks in the four countries considered most likely to flirt with leaving the EU. Hence Brexit changed the benchmarking process surrounding citizens’ evaluation of the prospects of getting a better deal outside the EU. Risk aversion thus explains the lack of a Brexit domino effect. However, the volatility of public opinion before and after the Article 50 talks, combined with the weaker increase in support over the EU as a whole, means there is no room for complacency over the future prospects of disintegration

    Towards Bipedal Behavior on a Quadrupedal Platform Using Optimal Control

    This paper explores the applicability of a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) controller design to the problem of bipedal stance on the Minitaur [1] quadrupedal robot. Restricted to the sagittal plane, this behavior exposes a three degree of freedom (DOF) double inverted pendulum with extensible length that can be projected onto the familiar underactuated revolute-revolute “Acrobot” model by assuming a locked prismatic DOF, and a pinned toe. While previous work has documented the successful use of local LQR control to stabilize a physical Acrobot, simulations reveal that a design very similar to those discussed in the past literature cannot achieve an empirically viable controller for our physical plant. Experiments with a series of increasingly close physical facsimiles leading to the actual Minitaur platform itself corroborate and underscore the physical Minitaur platform corroborate and underscore the implications of the simulation study. We conclude that local LQR-based linearized controller designs are too fragile to stabilize the physical Minitaur platform around its vertically erect equilibrium and end with a brief assessment of a variety of more sophisticated nonlinear control approaches whose pursuit is now in progress

    This article discusses the concepts of ‘servicelisation’ of labour and innovation incomplex organisational contexts. We consider that, at the present stage of societaldevelopment, the expansion of services itself represents the course from one industrialmodel to another, i.e. to a set of ways or methods of producing that are different.It is thus possible to speak of a ‘configuration of users’. In a ‘service economy’, theservice products are global and are not generally decomposable, so that it is thecustomer/user who assesses the satisfaction involved in consuming them, even beingable to intervene in their production. Besides, technology and immateriality are nowfundamental to the service logic. This article also proposes some alternative ways foranalysing the organisational structures dealing with such new phenomena

    Generation of Cosmological Seed Magnetic Fields from Inflation with Cutoff

    Inflation has the potential to seed the galactic magnetic fields observed today. However, there is an obstacle to the amplification of the quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field during inflation: namely the conformal invariance of electromagnetic theory on a conformally flat underlying geometry. As the existence of a preferred minimal length breaks the conformal invariance of the background geometry, it is plausible that this effect could generate some electromagnetic field amplification. We show that this scenario is equivalent to endowing the photon with a large negative mass during inflation. This effective mass is negligibly small in a radiation and matter dominated universe. Depending on the value of the free parameter of the theory, we show that the seed required by the dynamo mechanism can be generated.     Developing a typology of models of palliative care delivery in prisons in high-income countries:protocol for a scoping review with narrative synthesis

    Introduction A combination of punitive sentencing practices within ageing populations, compounded by the health challenges faced by people in prison, means that dedicated palliative care provision within prisons is a pressing requirement. However, evidence about exactly how quality palliative and end-of-life care is delivered in this environment remains sparse. This review aims to develop a typology of models of palliative and end-of-life care delivery within prisons in high-income countries to inform service development and policy. Methods and analysis We will conduct a scoping review of published studies and grey literature, following the Arksey and O'Malley framework. We will report data on models of palliative and end-of-life care delivery in prisons in high-income countries. Searches will be undertaken in Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, Social Sciences Citation Index and PsyINFO for all study types, published from 1 January 2000 to December 2021, and reference lists from key reviews and studies will be screened for additional references. We will also screen grey literature from within other high-income countries using a targeted search strategy. For published reports of original research, study quality and risk of bias will be assessed independently by two reviewers using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. A narrative synthesis of the data will be undertaken, integrating the results of the quality assessment. Ethics and dissemination Approval by research ethics committee is not required since the review only includes published and publicly accessible data. We will publish our findings in a peer-reviewed journal as per Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidance.     Johnson-Kendall-Roberts theory applied to living cells

    Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory is an accurate model for strong adhesion energies of soft slightly deformable material. Little is known about the validity of this theory on complex systems such as living cells. We have addressed this problem using a depletion controlled cell adhesion and measured the force necessary to separate the cells with a micropipette technique. We show that the cytoskeleton can provide the cells with a 3D structure that is sufficiently elastic and has a sufficiently low deformability for JKR theory to be valid. When the cytoskeleton is disrupted, JKR theory is no longer applicable
