Comunicação apresentada no World Conference on Information Systems and Technologies - WorldCIST 2014, Madeira, PortugalThis paper presents the project iReport SportsInjuries, which is a system with a focus on a Web application directed to sport health professionals, supporting the acquisition, analysis and dissemination of sports injuries information. This software will allow health professionals register and analyze sports injuries among sports populations. The application provides a reporting module that includes tables and charts to individually analyze injuries of a specific sports organization, a specific sport across organizations or a specific athlete, independently of where s/he practices. The system also offers a module for a global analysis, which allows the iReport SportsInjuries to obtain the incidence and prevalence values, besides the socioeconomics costs, regarding sports injuries at a national level. In order to offer these features, it is based on a global sports injuries model with the goal of standardizing data related to the sports injuries subject

Efficacy of a 3 month training program on the jump-landing technique in jump-landing sports. Design of a cluster randomized controlled trial

Abstract

Background

With the relatively high rate of injuries to the lower extremity due to jump-landing movement patterns and the accompanied high costs, there is need for determining potential preventive programs. A program on the intervention of jump-landing technique is possibly an important preventative measure since it appeared to reduce the incidence of lower extremity injuries. In real life situations, amateur sports lack the infrastructure and funds to have a sports physician or therapist permanently supervising such a program. Therefore the current prevention program is designed so that it could be implemented by coaches alone.

Objective

The objective of this randomized controlled trial is to evaluate the effect of a coach supervised intervention program targeting jump-landing technique on the incidence of lower extremity injuries.

Methods

Of the 110 Flemish teams of the elite division, 24 teams are included and equally randomized to two study groups. An equal selection of female and male teams with allocation to intervention and control group is obtained. The program is a modification of other prevention programs previously proven to be effective. All exercises in the current program are adjusted so that a more progressive development in the exercise is presented. Both the control and intervention group continue with their normal training routine, while the intervention group carries out the program on jump-landing technique. The full intervention program has a duration of three months and is performed 2 times a week during warm-up (5-10 min). Injuries are registered during the entire season.

Discussion

The results of this study can give valuable information on the effect of a coach supervised intervention program on jump-landing technique and injury occurrence. Results will become available in 2011.

Trial registration

Trial registration number: NTR2560</p

Incidence and prevalence of patellofemoral pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: Patellofemoral pain is considered one of the most common forms of knee pain, affecting adults, adolescents, and physically active populations. Inconsistencies in reported incidence and prevalence exist and in relation to the allocation of healthcare and research funding, there is a clear need to accurately understand the epidemiology of patellofemoral pain. Methods: An electronic database search was conducted, as well as grey literature databases, from inception to June 2017. Two authors independently selected studies, extracted data and appraised methodological quality. If heterogeneous, data were analysed descriptively. Where studies were homogeneous, data were pooled through a meta-analysis. Results: 23 studies were included. Annual prevalence for patellofemoral pain in the general population was reported as 22.7%, and adolescents as 28.9%. Incidence rates in military recruits ranged from 9.7 – 571.4/1,000 person-years, amateur runners in the general population at 1080.5/1,000 person-years and adolescents amateur athletes 5.1% - 14.9% over 1 season. One study reported point prevalence within military populations as 13.5%. The pooled estimate for point prevalence in adolescents was 7.2% (95% Confidence Interval: 6.3% - 8.3%), and in female only adolescent athletes was 22.7% (95% Confidence Interval 17.4% - 28.0%). Conclusion: This review demonstrates high incidence and prevalence levels for patellofemoral pain. Within the context of this, and poor long term prognosis and high disability levels, PFP should be an urgent research priority

Efficacité clinique du 2L®ALERG, un nouveau traitement de type immunomodulateur par voie sublinguale dans le rhume des foins une étude en double insu contre placebo

Objective of the study: The usual treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis is based on allergen eviction (illusory for pollens), immunotherapy and anti-allergic drugs. Micro-immunotherapy is a new therapeutic approach that uses a family of immunological chemical mediators to re-educate the immune system. This study evaluates the clinical efficacy of 2L®ALERG, a new immunomodulatory drug for the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Patients and methods: Forty-one patients (six to 41 years old) were included in a double-blind placebo-controlled study. 2L®ALERG is composed of sublingual capsules containing diluted and succussed cytokines and nucleic acids, targeting anti-inflammatory and anti-immunoglobulin-E responses. Results: The study has been focused onto the grass pollen season peak in the south of Belgium in 2004. No significant improvement of symptoms score (T5SS) has been observed in the active group (p=0.33). A significant decrease in rescue medication consumption has been evidenced (-48% ; p=0.002), as well as an improvement of a global symptom and medication score (p=0.017). The number of days free of any rescue medication was highly significantly decreased in the active group (-20% ; p<0.0001). No side effects were noted. Conclusion: 2L®ALERG is effective in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis and is well tolerated. Larger scale studies are nevertheless needed to confirm these data. © 2011 Elsevier Masson SAS
