    Tests of Integrability of the Supersymmetric Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation

    We apply various conventional tests of integrability to the supersymmetric nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. We find that a matrix Lax pair exists and that the system has the Painlev\'e property only for a particular choice of the free parameters of the theory. We also show that the second Hamiltonian structure generalizes to superspace only for these values of the parameters. We are unable to construct a zero curvature formulation of the equations based on OSp(2∣|1). However, this attempt yields a nonsupersymmetric fermionic generalization of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation which appears to possess the Painlev\'e property.Comment: 21 pages, UR-1344, ER-40685-79

    The Algebra of Non-Local Charges in Non-Linear Sigma Models

    We obtain the exact Dirac algebra obeyed by the conserved non-local charges in bosonic non-linear sigma models. Part of the computation is specialized for a symmetry group O(N)O(N). As it turns out the algebra corresponds to a cubic deformation of the Kac-Moody algebra. The non-linear terms are computed in closed form. In each Dirac bracket we only find highest order terms (as explained in the paper), defining a saturated algebra. We generalize the results for the presence of a Wess-Zumino term.     Comparative morphological analysis during larval development of three syntopic newt species (Urodela: Salamandridae)

    We provide comparative and updated staging tables for the larvae of three syntopic newt species – Triturus carnifex, Lissotriton italicus and Ichthyosaura alpestris inexpectatus –living in Calabria. A detailed description, stage by stage, of the full larval period until completion of metamorphosis is furnished, accompanied by photographic tables of the most important stages. The appearance of the most prominent and easily identifiable morphological features (i.e. development of gills, balancers and limbs; and body pigmentation), and length, have been used as staging criteria. Ontogenic development in the three considered species is compared with that of other Caudata species. For the three newt species, we also performed a comparative analysis of the developmental larval phases, emphasising the shared and species-specific features. The present descriptive study adds comparative information on distinctive morphological traits that may be useful for the recognition of newts during larval ontogeny and, in some cases, when sampling in the field

    Impaired Oxidative Status Is Strongly Associated with Cardiovascular Risk Factors

    The main target of primary prevention is the identification of cardiovascular risk factors aimed at reducing of the adverse impact of modifiable factors, such as lifestyle and pharmacological treatments. In humans, an alteration of the oxidative status has been associated with several pathologies, including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. However, the prognostic relevance of circulating oxidative stress biomarkers remains poorly understood. Our study explored, in a healthy population (n=322), the relationship between oxidative status and cardiovascular risk factors. Here, we were successful in demonstrating that plasmatic oxidative status is significantly associated with traditional cardiovascular risk factors. We revealed a significant depletion in the efficacy of total plasma antioxidant barrier in high cardiovascular risk categories, and we confirmed an age-related alteration of oxidative status. The efficacy of total plasma antioxidant barrier is significantly depleted in relation to metabolic disorders. Interestingly, the cholesterol imbalance is the main factor in depleting the efficacy of total plasma antioxidant barrier. The oxidative status is also influenced by hypertension, and a slight increase in systolic blood pressure determines a highly significant effect. We showed that the first detectable event of a redox disturbance is the repairing intervention of the antioxidant barrier that is thus decreased as overutilized

    Strain-Compensated InGaAsP Superlattices for Defect Reduction of InP Grown on Exact-Oriented (001) Patterned Si Substrates by Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition.

    We report on the use of InGaAsP strain-compensated superlattices (SC-SLs) as a technique to reduce the defect density of Indium Phosphide (InP) grown on silicon (InP-on-Si) by Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD). Initially, a 2 ÎŒm thick gallium arsenide (GaAs) layer was grown with very high uniformity on exact oriented (001) 300 mm Si wafers; which had been patterned in 90 nm V-grooved trenches separated by silicon dioxide (SiO₂) stripes and oriented along the [110] direction. Undercut at the Si/SiO₂ interface was used to reduce the propagation of defects into the III-V layers. Following wafer dicing; 2.6 ÎŒm of indium phosphide (InP) was grown on such GaAs-on-Si templates. InGaAsP SC-SLs and thermal annealing were used to achieve a high-quality and smooth InP pseudo-substrate with a reduced defect density. Both the GaAs-on-Si and the subsequently grown InP layers were characterized using a variety of techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD); atomic force microscopy (AFM); transmission electron microscopy (TEM); and electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI); which indicate high-quality of the epitaxial films. The threading dislocation density and RMS surface roughness of the final InP layer were 5 × 10⁞/cmÂČ and 1.2 nm; respectively and 7.8 × 10⁷/cmÂČ and 10.8 nm for the GaAs-on-Si layer

    Differential expression of aquaporin 3 in Triturus italicus from larval to adult epidermal conversion

    By using immunohistochemical techniques applied to confocal microscopy, the presence of aquaporin 3 water channel in the epidermis of Triturus italicus (Amphibia, Urodela) has been shown. We analysed the expression of aquaporin 3 (AQP3) during the larval, pre-metamorphic and adult phases; we also showed the localization of the water-channel protein AQP3 in free-swimming conditions and during aestivation in parallel with histological analysis of the skin, focusing on the possible relationship between protein expression and terrestrial habitats. Our results indicate that aquaporin is produced as the epidermis modifies during the functional maturation phase starting at the climax. Moreover, our data suggest an increase in enzyme expression in aestivating newts emphasizing the putative functional importance of differential expression related to a distinct phase of the biological cycle

    Fatigue resistance of low pressure nitrided Cr-Mo low alloy steels

    Fatigue resistance of steel parts can be improved by nitriding, the more the deeper is the layer affected by nitrogen diffusion, as stated by the Lessells-Firrao law. Low-pressure nitriding has been applied to wheel's hubs fabricated with a quenched and tempered Cr-Mo low alloy steel. N diffusion depths have been compared to similar results obtained with the same type of automotive parts subjected to classical gas nitriding. 12 h total low-pressure treatment time provided an almost 100% increase of hardened depth over 40 h gas nitrided parts. Both treatments allowed reaching an adequate fatigue life, whereas induction hardened parts did not. X-ray diffraction analysis provided phase constitution of top converted layers in both nitriding cases. A rationale based on the effect of early treatment stage top layer formation has been developed

    Does the revised cardiac risk index predict cardiac complications following elective lung resection?

    Background: Revised Cardiac Risk Index (RCRI) score and Thoracic Revised Cardiac Risk Index (ThRCRI) score were developed to predict the risks of postoperative major cardiac complications in generic surgical population and thoracic surgery respectively. This study aims to determine the accuracy of these scores in predicting the risk of developing cardiac complications including atrial arrhythmias after lung resection surgery in adults. Methods: We studied 703 patients undergoing lung resection surgery in a tertiary thoracic surgery centre. Observed outcome measures of postoperative cardiac morbidity and mortality were compared against those predicted by risk. Results: Postoperative major cardiac complications and supraventricular arrhythmias occurred in 4.8% of patients. Both index scores had poor discriminative ability for predicting postoperative cardiac complications with an area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of 0.59 (95% CI 0.51-0.67) for the RCRI score and 0.57 (95% CI 0.49-0.66) for the ThRCRI score. Conclusions: In our cohort, RCRI and ThRCRI scores failed to accurately predict the risk of cardiac complications in patients undergoing elective resection of lung cancer. The British Thoracic Society (BTS) recommendation to seek a cardiology referral for all asymptomatic pre-operative lung resection patients with > 3 RCRI risk factors is thus unlikely to be of clinical benefit

    Lax pair and super-Yangian symmetry of the non-linear super-Schr\"odinger equation

    We consider a version of the non-linear Schr\"odinger equation with M bosons and N fermions. We first solve the classical and quantum versions of this equation, using a super-Zamolodchikov-Faddeev (ZF) algebra. Then we prove that the hierarchy associated to this model admits a super-Yangian Y(gl(M|N)) symmetry. We exhibit the corresponding (classical and quantum) Lax pairs. Finally, we construct explicitly the super-Yangian generators, in terms of the canonical fields on the one hand, and in terms of the ZF algebra generators on the other hand.     Shorter length dialysis sessions are associated with increased mortality, independent of body weight

    Hemodialysis patients have high rates of mortality that may be related to aspects of the dialytic procedure. In prior studies, shorter length dialysis sessions have been associated with decreased survival, but these studies may have been confounded by body size differences. Here we tested whether in-center thrice-weekly hemodialysis patients with adequate urea clearances but shorter dialysis session length is associated with mortality independent of body size. Data were taken from a large national cohort of patients from a large dialysis organization undergoing thrice-weekly, in-center hemodialysis. In the primary analysis, patients with prescribed dialysis sessions greater and less than 240 minutes were pair-matched on post-dialysis weight as well as on age, gender, and vascular access type. Compared to prescribed longer dialysis sessions, session lengths less than 240 minutes were significantly associated with increased all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio 1.26). The association was consistent across strata of age, gender, and dialysis post-weight. Secondary analyses found a dose-response between prescribed session length and survival. Thus, among patients with adequate urea clearance, shorter dialysis session lengths are associated with increased mortality independent of body weight
