Universal features in sequential and nonsequential two-photon double ionization of helium
We analyze two-photon double ionization of helium in both the nonsequential
and sequential regime. We show that the energy spacing between the two emitted
electrons provides the key parameter that controls both the energy and the
angular distribution and reveals the universal features present in both the
nonsequential and sequential regime. This universality, i.e., independence of
photon energy, is a manifestation of the continuity across the threshold for
sequential double ionization. For all photon energies, the energy distribution
can be described by a universal shape function that contains only the spectral
and temporal information entering second-order time-dependent perturbation
theory. Angular correlations and distributions are found to be more sensitive
to the photon energy. In particular, shake-up interferences have a large effect
on the angular distribution. Energy spectra, angular distributions
parameterized by the anisotropy parameters, and total cross sections presented
in this paper are obtained by fully correlated time-dependent ab initio

The European Project SustainAQ (Framework 6) aims to identify the limiting factors for the sustainable production of aquatic origin food in Eastern Europe. It focuses on the possible use of Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS) as sustainable method for the production of aquatic animals as mentioned in the communication of the European Commission on Aquaculture in 2009. RASs already exist mainly in western countries and proved economically feasible. RASs allow controlling the production process including effluents, biosecurity and escapes. Eastern European countries are facing challenges related to their excessive water use waste emission, and others. Therefore, these countries are potential beneficiaries of improved sustainability through RAS use. This project intends to assess the benefits of introducing and applying RAS for Eastern European aquaculture. This project involves three Western European countries (Norway, the Netherlands and France) and six East European countries (Croatia, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic and Poland). Ten research institutions collaborate in different tasks (coordination, data collection, data analysis, etc.), and nine small-medium enterprises (SME) participate in data mining (Table 1). The present data is therefore based on the situation in those countries during 2006 till 2008 before the report got finally compiled in 2008/2009
Intrinsic galaxy shapes and alignments II: Modelling the intrinsic alignment contamination of weak lensing surveys
Intrinsic galaxy alignments constitute the major astrophysical systematic of
forthcoming weak gravitational lensing surveys but also yield unique insights
into galaxy formation and evolution. We build analytic models for the
distribution of galaxy shapes based on halo properties extracted from the
Millennium Simulation, differentiating between early- and late-type galaxies as
well as central galaxies and satellites. The resulting ellipticity correlations
are investigated for their physical properties and compared to a suite of
current observations. The best-faring model is then used to predict the
intrinsic alignment contamination of planned weak lensing surveys. We find that
late-type galaxy models generally have weak intrinsic ellipticity correlations,
marginally increasing towards smaller galaxy separation and higher redshift.
The signal for early-type models at fixed halo mass strongly increases by three
orders of magnitude over two decades in galaxy separation, and by one order of
magnitude from z=0 to z=2. The intrinsic alignment strength also depends
strongly on halo mass, but not on galaxy luminosity at fixed mass, or galaxy
number density in the environment. We identify models that are in good
agreement with all observational data, except that all models over-predict
alignments of faint early-type galaxies. The best model yields an intrinsic
alignment contamination of a Euclid-like survey between 0.5-10% at z>0.6 and on
angular scales larger than a few arcminutes. Cutting 20% of red foreground
galaxies using observer-frame colours can suppress this contamination by up to

Hall effect in laser ablated Co_2(Mn,Fe)Si thin films
Pulsed laser deposition was employed to grow thin films of the Heusler
compounds Co_2MnSi and Co_2FeSi. Epitaxial growth was realized both directly on
MgO (100) and on a Cr or Fe buffer layer. Structural analysis by x-ray and
electron diffraction shows for both materials the ordered L2_1 structure. Bulk
magnetization was determined with a SQUID magnetometer. The values agree with
the Slater-Pauling rule for half-metallic Heusler compounds. On the films grown
directly on the substrate measurements of the Hall effect have been performed.
The normal Hall effect is nearly temperature independent and points towards a
compensated Fermi surface. The anomalous contribution is found to be dominated
by skew scattering. A remarkable sign change of both normal and anomalous Hall
coefficients is observed on changing the valence electron count from 29 (Mn) to

Frequency comparisons and absolute frequency measurements of 171Yb+ single-ion optical frequency standards
We describe experiments with an optical frequency standard based on a laser
cooled Yb ion confined in a radiofrequency Paul trap. The
electric-quadrupole transition from the ground state to the
state at the wavelength of 436 nm is used as the reference
transition. In order to compare two Yb standards, separate
frequency servo systems are employed to stabilize two probe laser frequencies
to the reference transition line centers of two independently stored ions. The
experimental results indicate a relative instability (Allan standard deviation)
of the optical frequency difference between the two systems of only, so that shifts in the sub-hertz range can be
resolved. Shifts of several hertz are observed if a stationary electric field
gradient is superimposed on the radiofrequency trap field. The absolute optical
transition frequency of Yb at 688 THz was measured with a cesium atomic
clock at two times separated by 2.8 years. A temporal variation of this
frequency can be excluded within a relative uncertainty of yr. Combined with recently published values for the constancy
of other transition frequencies this measurement provides a limit on the
present variability of the fine structure constant at the level of

Unravelling the Mysteries of the Leo Ring: An Absorption Line Study of an Unusual Gas Cloud
Since the 1980's discovery of the large (2x10^9 Msun) intergalactic cloud
known as the Leo Ring, this object has been the center of a lively debate about
its origin. Determining the origin of this object is still important as we
develop a deeper understanding of the accretion and feedback processes that
shape galaxy evolution. We present HST/COS observations of three sightlines
near the Ring, two of which penetrate the high column density neutral hydrogen
gas visible in 21 cm observations of the object. These observations provide the
first direct measurement of the metallicity of the gas in the Ring, an
important clue to its origins. Our best estimate of the metallicity of the ring
is ~10% Zsun, higher than expected for primordial gas but lower than expected
from an interaction. We discuss possible modifications to the interaction and
primordial gas scenarios that would be consistent with this metallicity
