An investigation of the nature of the carbonaceous species deposited upon mordenite by reaction with methanol has been undertaken. The nature of the species has been shown to be a strong function of both temperature and time on stream. Upon reaction at 300 degrees C a range of alkyl and aromatic species, consistent with the development of an active hydrocarbon pool, are evident and time on stream studies have shown that these are developed within 5 min. Upon reaction at 500 degrees C, a narrower range of hydrogen deficient aromatic species is evident. Thermal volatilisation analysis (TVA), not previously applied to the study of coked zeolites, is shown to be complementary to the more commonly applied C analysis, C-13 MAS NMR and TGA techniques

Transforming growth factor beta-1, encoded by the TGFB1 gene, is a cytokine that plays a central role in many physiological and pathogenic processes. We have sequenced TGFB1 regulatory region and assigned allelic genotypes in a large cohort of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients and donors. In this study, we analyzed 522 unrelated donor-patient pairs and examined the combined effect of all the common polymorphisms in this genomic region. In univariate analysis, we found that patients carrying a specific allele, 'p001', showed significantly reduced overall survival (5-year overall survival 30.7% for p001/ p001 patients vs. 41.6% others; P=0.032) and increased non-relapse mortality (1-year nonrelapse mortality: 39.0% vs. 25.4%; P=0.039) after transplantation. In multivariate analysis, the presence of a p001/ p001 genotype in patients was confirmed as an independent factor for reduced overall survival [hazard ratio=1.53 (1.04-2.24); P=0.031], and increased non-relapse mortality [hazard ratio=1.73 (1.06-2.83); P=0.030]. In functional experiments we found a trend towards a higher percentage of surface transforming growth factor beta-1-positive regulatory T cells after activation when the cells had a p001 allele (P=0.07). Higher or lower production of transforming growth factor beta-1 in the inflammatory context of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation may influence the development of complications in these patients. Findings indicate that TGFB1 genotype could potentially be of use as a prognostic factor in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation risk assessment algorithms

Dehydrative etherification reactions of glycerol with alcohols catalyzed by recyclable nanoporous aluminosilicates: telescoped routes to glyceryl ethers

Catalytic strategies for the efficient transformation of abundant sustainable bioderived molecules, such as glycerol, into higher value more useful products is an important research goal. In this study, we demonstrate that atom efficient dehydrative etherification reactions of glycerol with activated alcohols are effectively catalyzed by nanoporous aluminosilicate materials in dimethylcarbonate (DMC) to produce the corresponding 1-substituted glyceryl ethers in high yield. By carrying out the reaction in acetone, it is possible to capitalize on the ability of these materials to catalyze the corresponding acetalization reaction, allowing for the development of novel, telescoped acetalization-dehydrative etherification reaction sequences to selectively produce protected solketal derivatives. These materials also catalyze the telescoped reaction of glycerol with tert-butanol (TBA) in acetone to produce the corresponding solketal mono tert-butyl ether product in high yield, providing a potential route to convert glycerol directly into a useful and sustainable fuel additive

Perspective: Current advances in solid-state NMR spectroscopy

In contrast to the rapid and revolutionary impact of solution-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) on modern chemistry, the field of solid-state NMR has matured more slowly. This reflects the major technical challenges of much reduced spectral resolution and sensitivity in solid-state as compared to solution-state spectra, as well as the relative complexity of the solid state. In this perspective, we outline the technique developments that have pushed resolution to intrinsic limits and the approaches, including ongoing major developments in the field of Dynamic Nuclear Polarisation, that have enhanced spectral sensitivity. The information on local structure and dynamics that can be obtained using these gains in sensitivity and resolution is illustrated with a diverse range of examples from large biomolecules to energy materials and pharmaceuticals and from both ordered and highly disordered materials. We discuss how parallel developments in quantum chemical calculation, particularly density functional theory, have enabled experimental data to be translated directly into information on local structure and dynamics, giving rise to the developing field of “NMR crystallography

Understanding the structure directing action of copper-polyamine complexes in the direct synthesis of Cu-SAPO-34 and Cu-SAPO-18 catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3

This work has been supported by Johnson Matthey PLC, UK.Cu2+ cations complexed by linear polyamines have been studied as structure-directing agents (SDAs) for the direct synthesis of copper-containing microporous silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO) materials. The complexing ligands diethylenetriamine (DETA), N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine (HEEDA), triethylenetetramine (TETA), N,N′-bis(2-aminoethyl)-1,3-propanediamine (232), 1,2-bis(3-aminopropylamino)ethane (323), tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) and pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA) have been investigated. For comparison, syntheses have been performed using the analogous nickel-polyamine complexes. Cu2+ and Ni2+ forms of both SAPO-18 and SAPO-34 materials have been prepared. While most polyamine complexes direct crystallisation to SAPO-34, SAPO-18 has been prepared with Cu2+(232), Ni2+(232) and Ni2+(TETA). The coordination geometry of the included metal complexes was studied by UV-visible and EPR spectroscopy and computer simulation. SAPO-18 is favoured by the smaller square planar complexes or octahedral species (with 2 water molecules) of 232 and TETA. Calcination leaves extra-framework Cu2+ and Ni2+ cations within SAPO-18 and SAPO-34 frameworks. In situ synchrotron IR spectroscopy of Ni-SAPO-18 has shown thermal template degradation occurs via nitrile intermediates. Rietveld structural analysis located extra-framework Cu2+ and Ni2+ cations released by calcination. In SAPO-34, Cu2+ and Ni2+ were located in the 8R window of the cha cage. A second site was found for Ni2+ at the centre of the six-membered rings (6Rs) of the double-six-ring (D6R) sub-units. In SAPO-18 both Cu2+ and Ni2+ cations were located only in the 6Rs of the D6R sub-units. Selected copper SAPO-18 and SAPO-34 samples were tested in the selective catalytic reduction of NO with ammonia (NH3-SCR); both showed high activity.PostprintPostprintPeer reviewe

Objective It is hypothesised that firstborn children and only children are more intelligent with higher intelligence scores having been observed in firstborn or only children. Evidence of the increased intelligence has been suggested by the fact that 21/23 (91%) of US astronauts, 23/43 (53%) of US presidents and between 75 and 80% of students at Harvard are firstborn or only children. It is of interest to investigate, therefore, whether a high achieving career such as medicine has a disproportionate number of firstborn or only children. Design A survey of medical students. Setting The University of Sheffield Medical School. Participants All students studying medicine in the academic year 2011–2012. Main outcome measures The proportion of firstborn or only children. Results There was a disproportionate number of students who were firstborn or only children: 53% (95% CI 49 to 58%). The expected percentage is 39.8% and therefore we can reject the null hypothesis. The results were consistent across all phases of study. Conclusions There is a higher than expected proportion of medical students at the University of Sheffield who are firstborn or only children. The data though highlight the issue of comparing populations. Here we are comparing a population of medical students with a general population. A comparison which may not be appropriate as medical students may be drawn from a subsample of the general population

Providing molecular diagnosis and monitoring of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia in Abuja, Nigeria

The process of managing chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) at the National Hospital Abuja was frustrating to both the clinicians and patients because the hospital did not have facilities for molecular diagnosis, which is a prerequisite to access imatinib mesylate through the Glivec International Patient Assistance Program (GIPAP; free access to imatinib) program. The testing was outsourced, and in addition to being very expensive, the results usually take months to get back to the hospital. In 2014, the International Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Foundation offered clinical CML preceptorship training to C.U. at the Hammersmith Hospital, London, United Kingdom, (Figure 1) under the mentorship of Jane Apperley. In 2016, the International Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Foundation extended the collaboration by providing a grant of $10 000 US dollars for the purchase of a GeneXpert polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machine for the diagnosis and monitoring of CML patients at the National Hospital Abuja. The Max Foundation provided a supplementary grant and donated 50 test kits to set up on-site PCR (GeneXpert) testing for molecular diagnosis and monitoring of CML patients (Figure 2)
