    Olympic and paralympic games in Brazil: Learning from barcelona and sydney

    Between 2014 and 2016, Brazil will host a number of large events, where the Olympics of Rio de Janeiro are the most noteworthy. The tourism industry will be one of the beneficiaries. It has established an objective to bring 10 million tourists in 2016, doubling overseas arrivals. This can create many business opportunities for the industry. This paper analyzes this goal by examining two key factors linked to the Olympics, legacy and new tourism segments, in particular, seniors and accessible tourism. A study using content analysis of the bibliography about Rio 2016 will be applied to determine the current body of knowledge. Following this, a case study will be drawn upon the Barcelona and Sydney Games to establish the key elements of the legacy and their tourist outcomes. The findings will establish the main factors required to meet Brazil's tourist objectives. © RAE

    Competing for the disability tourism market - A comparative exploration of the factors of accessible tourism competitiveness in Spain and Australia

    © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. This paper seeks to address the research question of what factors make a destination competitive for the accessible tourism market. The research design is based on destination competitiveness theories. The objective is to formulate a ranking that can compare the competitiveness factors between two countries, with historical and appropriate data sets, in order to examine destination competitiveness for accessible tourism across the tourist regions of both countries. The current research examines the background of destination competitiveness theories, both generally and specifically, as they relate to the research contexts. The research design was developed to examine the underlying elements that facilitate accessible tourism experiences through factorial and cluster analyses, adapting the Crouch's model of competitiveness destination. The findings suggest that the competitiveness factors are different in determinance and importance, and are country-dependent. The climate, locale and tourist structure are the most important for Spain, whereas quality of services, brand and infrastructure are of great importance for Australia. The cluster analysis of the different tourist regions suggests the existence of three main stages. These stages where related to their accessibility level of offered tourism product and their policies

    Magnetically controlled exciton transfer in hybrid quantum dot-quantum well nanostructures

    A magnetophotoluminescence study of the carrier transfer with hybrid InAs/GaAs quantum dot(QD)-InGaAs quantum well (QW) structures is carried out where we observe an unsual dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) on the GaAs barrier thickness at strong magnetic field and excitation density. For the case of a thin barrier the QW PL intensity is observed to increase at the expense of a decrease in the QD PL intensity. This is attributed to changes in the interplane carrier dynamics in the QW and the wetting layer (WL) resulting from increasing the magnetic field along with changes in the coupling between QD excited states and exciton states in the QW and the WL

    Descriptive and retrospective study of 200 patients who have been subjected to a Knee prosthesis surgical intervention in the orthopedic department of the Hospital Complexo Hospitalario Universitario de Vigo. An individualized care plan computerized according to the Gacela project has been implemented. Forty patients have been excluded from the study because even if they had followed a plan, it only included actions. It was only considered the objectives and diagnosis of the individualized care plan that have been chosen by nurses, choosing those objectives that have been selected more than 15 times and those diagnosis that have been selected more than 20 times. When executing the study, the historical register of the Gacela project was used. The goal was to develop a standard care plan from the daily practice of the nurses and whose objectives would be saving time in care planning, using a job methodology.Estudio descriptivo retrospectivo de 200 pacientes que han sido intervenidos de una prótesis de rodilla en la unidad de traumatología del Complexo Hospitalario Universitario de Vigo y a los que se le ha aplicado un plan de cuidados individualizado informatizado, según el Plan Gacela. Del estudio se eliminan 40 pacientes porque aunque se les había abierto una plan ,éste solo contenía acciones. Se han valorado los objetivos y diagnósticos elegidos por las enfermeras en el plan de cuidados individualizado, eligiendo para formar parte del plan de cuidados estándar aquellos objetivos que habían sido seleccionados en más de 15 ocasiones y aquellos diagnósticos en más de 20 ocasiones. Para realizar este estudio recurrimos al histórico Gacela de nuestro hospital, teniendo como finalidad la elaboración de un plan de cuidados estándar que surgiese de la práctica diaria de las enfermeras y cuyos objetivos serían facilitar el trabajo, ahorrando tiempo en la planificación además de utilizar una metodología de trabajo

    Pathway to an excitonic coherence

    This paper discusses the combined effects of optical excitation power, interface roughness, lattice temperature, and applied magnetic fields on the spin-coherence of excitonic states in GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum wells. For low optical powers, at lattice temperatures between 4 K and 50 K, the scattering with acoustic phonons and short-range interactions appear as the main decoherence mechanisms. Statistical fluctuations of the band-gap however become also relevant in this regime and we were able to deconvolute them from the decoherence contributions. The circularly polarized magneto-photoluminescence unveils a non-monotonic tuning of the coherence for one of the spin components at low magnetic fields. This effect has been ascribed to the competition between short-range interactions and spin-flip scattering, modulated by the momentum relaxation time

    Topology driven g-factor tuning in type-II quantum dots

    We investigate how the voltage control of the exciton lateral dipole moment induces a transition from singly to doubly connected topology in type-II In As/Ga Asx Sb1−x quantum dots. The latter causes visible Aharonov-Bohm oscillations and a change of the exciton g factor, which are modulated by the applied bias. The results are explained in the frame of realistic →k⋅ →p and effective Hamiltonian models and could open a venue for new spin quantum memories beyond the In As/Ga As realm

    LPA1/3 receptor antagonist KI16425 as a novel treatment for the neurobehavioural effects of the ethanol

    Aims. The lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is an ubiquitous lysophospholipid that acts through G-protein coupled receptors (LPA1-6), and it is involved in the modulation of emotional and motivational behaviors. Recent literature suggests a relevant role of the LPA signaling system in alcoholism, specially through the LPA1 receptor. This work aims to elucidate whether systemic LPA1/3 receptor blockade with ki16425 would modulate ethanol effects on the brain and behavior. Methods. This study consisted of four experiments assessing the effect of intraperitoneal ki16425 administration (20 mg/kg) on ethanol-related behaviors. Male Wistar rats or mice (Swiss, C57BL/6J or hybrid C57BL/6J×129X1/SvJ background) were employed in various procedures: I) oral ethanol selfadministration; II) loss of righting reflex; III) ethanol-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) and IV) ethanol-withdrawal behavioral symptoms (by assessing nest building, physical signs and spatial working memory). Immunohistochemistry was carried out in order to evaluate basal neuronal activity (c-Fos) in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and in the hippocampus, as well as adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) using proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and doublecortin (DCX) markers. Results. Systemic Ki16425 administration reduced oral self-administration of ethanol in previously trained rats. Likewise, ki16425 pretreatment in mice attenuated the sedation induced by ethanol, blocked ethanol rewarding effect in a CPP paradigm and reduced behavioral symptoms induced by ethanol withdrawal. Immunohistochemistry revealed a protective effect of ki16425 against ethanol actions on basal neuronal activity in the mPFC and on AHN. Conclusions. Our results suggest a potential usefulness of systemic LPA1/3 receptors antagonists as a novel treatment for alcohol-related disorders.Universidad de Málaga, Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

    Expanding the genetic spectrum of TUBB1-related thrombocytopenia

    β1-Tubulin plays a major role in proplatelet formation and platelet shape maintenance, and pathogenic variants in TUBB1 lead to thrombocytopenia and platelet anisocytosis (TUBB1-RT). To date, the reported number of pedigrees with TUBB1-RT and of rare TUBB1 variants with experimental demonstration of pathogenicity is limited. Here, we report 9 unrelated families presenting with thrombocytopenia carrying 6 β1-tubulin variants, p.Cys12LeufsTer12, p.Thr107Pro, p.Gln423*, p.Arg359Trp, p.Gly109Glu, and p.Gly269Asp, the last of which novel. Segregation studies showed incomplete penetrance of these variants for platelet traits. Indeed, most carriers showed macrothrombocytopenia, some only increased platelet size, and a minority had no abnormalities. Moreover, only homozygous carriers of the p.Gly109Glu variant displayed macrothrombocytopenia, highlighting the importance of allele burden in the phenotypic expression of TUBB1-RT. The p.Arg359Trp, p.Gly269Asp, and p.Gly109Glu variants deranged β1-tubulin incorporation into the microtubular marginal ring in platelets but had a negligible effect on platelet activation, secretion, or spreading, suggesting that β1-tubulin is dispensable for these processes. Transfection of TUBB1 missense variants in CHO cells altered β1-tubulin incorporation into the microtubular network. In addition, TUBB1 variants markedly impaired proplatelet formation from peripheral blood CD34+ cell-derived megakaryocytes. Our study, using in vitro modeling, molecular characterization, and clinical investigations provides a deeper insight into the pathogenicity of rare TUBB1 variants.     Relationship between damage and mortality in juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus: Cluster analyses in a large cohort from the Spanish Society of Rheumatology Lupus Registry (RELESSER)

    Objectives: To identify patterns (clusters) of damage manifestation within a large cohort of juvenile SLE (jSLE) patients and evaluate their possible association with mortality. Methods: This is a multicentre, descriptive, cross-sectional study of a cohort of 345 jSLE patients from the Spanish Society of Rheumatology Lupus Registry. Organ damage was ascertained using the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics Damage Index. Using cluster analysis, groups of patients with similar patterns of damage manifestation were identified and compared. Results: Mean age (years) ± S.D. at diagnosis was 14.2 ± 2.89; 88.7% were female and 93.4% were Caucasian. Mean SLICC/ACR DI ± S.D. was 1.27 ± 1.63. A total of 12 (3.5%) patients died. Three damage clusters were identified: Cluster 1 (72.7% of patients) presented a lower number of individuals with damage (22.3% vs. 100% in Clusters 2 and 3, P < 0.001); Cluster 2 (14.5% of patients) was characterized by renal damage in 60% of patients, significantly more than Clusters 1 and 3 (P < 0.001), in addition to increased more ocular, cardiovascular and gonadal damage; Cluster 3 (12.7%) was the only group with musculoskeletal damage (100%), significantly higher than in Clusters 1 and 2 (P < 0.001). The overall mortality rate in Cluster 2 was 2.2 times higher than that in Cluster 3 and 5 times higher than that in Cluster 1 (P < 0.017 for both comparisons). Conclusions: In a large cohort of jSLE patients, renal and musculoskeletal damage manifestations were the two dominant forms of damage by which patients were sorted into clinically meaningful clusters. We found two clusters of jSLE with important clinical damage that were associated with higher rates of mortality, especially for the cluster of patients with predominant renal damage. Physicians should be particularly vigilant to the early prevention of damage in this subset of jSLE patients with kidney involvement
