IONS (ANURADHA): Ionization states of low energy cosmic rays
IONS (ANURADHA), the experimental payload designed specifically to determine the ionization states, flux, composition, energy spectra and arrival directions of low energy (10 to 100 MeV/amu) anomalous cosmic ray ions of helium to iron in near-Earth space, had a highly successful flight and operation Spacelab-3 mission. The experiment combines the accuracy of a highly sensitive CR-39 nuclear track detector with active components included in the payload to achieve the experimental objectives. Post-flight analysis of detector calibration pieces placed within the payload indicated no measurable changes in detector response due to its exposure in spacelab environment. Nuclear tracks produced by alpha-particles, oxygen group and Fe ions in low energy anomalous cosmic rays were identified. It is calculated that the main detector has recorded high quality events of about 10,000 alpha-particles and similar number of oxygen group and heavier ions of low energy cosmic rays
Semiclassical wave equation and exactness of the WKB method
The exactness of the semiclassical method for three-dimensional problems in
quantum mechanics is analyzed. The wave equation appropriate in the
quasiclassical region is derived. It is shown that application of the standard
leading-order WKB quantization condition to this equation reproduces exact
energy eigenvalues for all solvable spherically symmetric potentials.Comment: 13 page
Scattering of relativistic particles with Aharonov-Bohm-Coulomb interaction in two dimensions
The Aharonov-Bohm-Coulomb potentials in two dimensions may describe the
interaction between two particles carrying electric charge and magnetic flux,
say, Chern--Simons solitons, or so called anyons. The scattering problem for
such two-body systems is extended to the relativistic case, and the scattering
amplitude is obtained as a partial wave series. The electric charge and
magnetic flux is (, ) for one particle and (, ) for the
other. When , and takes on integer
or half integer values, the partial wave series is summed up approximately to
give a closed form. The results exhibit some nonperturbative features and
cannot be obtained from perturbative quantum electrodynamics at the tree level.Comment: revtex, 11 pages, no figur
Effect of isospin dependent cross-section on fragment production in the collision of charge asymmetric nuclei
To understand the role of isospin effects on fragmentation due to the
collisions of charge asymmetric nuclei, we have performed a complete
systematical study using isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics model.
Here simulations have been carried out for , where n
varies from 47 to 59 and for , where m varies from 14
to 23. Our study shows that isospin dependent cross-section shows its influence
on fragmentation in the collision of neutron rich nuclei
The systematic study of the influence of neutron excess on the fusion cross sections using different proximity-type potentials
Using different types of proximity potentials, we have examined the trend of
variations of barrier characteristics (barrier height and its position) as well
as fusion cross sections for 50 isotopic systems including various collisions
of C, O, Mg, Si, S, Ca, Ar, Ti and Ni nuclei with condition
for compound systems. The results of our studies reveal that the relationships
between increase of barrier positions and decrease of barrier heights are both
linear with increase of ratio. Moreover, fusion cross sections also
enhance linearly with increase of this ratio.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 5 Table
A future for intelligent autonomous ocean observing systems
Ocean scientists have dreamed of and recently started to realize an ocean observing revolution with autonomous observing platforms and sensors. Critical questions to be answered by such autonomous systems are where, when, and what to sample for optimal information, and how to optimally reach the sampling locations. Definitions, concepts, and progress towards answering these questions using quantitative predictions and fundamental principles are presented. Results in reachability and path planning, adaptive sampling, machine learning, and teaming machines with scientists are overviewed. The integrated use of differential equations and theory from varied disciplines is emphasized. The results provide an inference engine and knowledge base for expert autonomous observing systems. They are showcased using a set of recent at-sea campaigns and realistic simulations. Real-time experiments with identical autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in the Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound region first show that our predicted time-optimal paths were faster than shortest distance paths. Deterministic and probabilistic reachability and path forecasts issued and validated for gliders and floats in the northern Arabian Sea are then presented. Novel Bayesian adaptive sampling for hypothesis testing and optimal learning are finally shown to forecast the observations most informative to estimate the accuracy of model formulations, the values of ecosystem parameters and dynamic fields, and the presence of Lagrangian Coherent Structures
Quantum-dot spin qubit and hyperfine interaction
We review our investigation of the spin dynamics for two electrons confined
to a double quantum dot under the influence of the hyperfine interaction
between the electron spins and the surrounding nuclei. Further we propose a
scheme to narrow the distribution of difference in polarization between the two
dots in order to suppress hyperfine induced decoherence.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures; Presented as plenary talk at the annual DPG

Renormalization--Group Solutions for Yukawa Potential
The self--similar renormalization group is used to obtain expressions for the
spectrum of the Hamiltonian with the Yukawa potential. The critical screening
parameter above which there are no bound states is also obtained by this
method. The approach presented illustrates that one can achieve good accuracy
without involving extensive numerical calculations, but invoking instead the
renormalization--group techniques.Comment: 1 file, 12 pages, RevTe
Quantum Mechanics of Multi-Prong Potentials
We describe the bound state and scattering properties of a quantum mechanical
particle in a scalar -prong potential. Such a study is of special interest
since these situations are intermediate between one and two dimensions. The
energy levels for the special case of identical prongs exhibit an
alternating pattern of non-degeneracy and fold degeneracy. It is shown
that the techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics can be used to generate
new solutions. Solutions for prongs of arbitrary lengths are developed.
Discussions of tunneling in -well potentials and of scattering for piecewise
constant potentials are given. Since our treatment is for general values of
, the results can be studied in the large limit. A somewhat surprising
result is that a free particle incident on an -prong vertex undergoes
continuously increased backscattering as the number of prongs is increased.Comment: 17 pages. LATEX. On request, TOP_DRAW files or hard copies available

Any l-state improved quasi-exact analytical solutions of the spatially dependent mass Klein-Gordon equation for the scalar and vector Hulthen potentials
We present a new approximation scheme for the centrifugal term to obtain a
quasi-exact analytical bound state solutions within the framework of the
position-dependent effective mass radial Klein-Gordon equation with the scalar
and vector Hulth\'{e}n potentials in any arbitrary dimension and orbital
angular momentum quantum numbers The Nikiforov-Uvarov (NU) method is used
in the calculations. The relativistic real energy levels and corresponding
eigenfunctions for the bound states with different screening parameters have
been given in a closed form. It is found that the solutions in the case of
constant mass and in the case of s-wave () are identical with the ones
obtained in literature.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur
