Current research on aviation weather (bibliography)

    Get PDF
This bibliography of 326 readily usable references of basic and applied research programs related to the various areas of aviation meteorology was assembled. A literature search was conducted which surveyed the major abstract publications such as the International Aerospace Abstracts, the Meteorological and Geoastrophysical Abstracts, and the Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports. In addition, NASA and DOT computer literature searches were run; and NASA, NOAA, and FAA research project managers were requested to provide writeups on their ongoing research

Proceedings of the 2nd Annual Workshop on Meteorological and Environmental Inputs to Aviation Systems

    Get PDF
The proceedings of a workshop held at the University of Tennessee Space Institute, Tullahoma, Tennessee, March 28-30, 1978, are reported. The workshop was jointly sponsored by NASA, NOAA, FAA, and brought together many disciplines of the aviation communities in round table discussions. The major objectives of the workshop are to satisfy such needs of the sponsoring agencies as the expansion of our understanding and knowledge of the interactions of the atmosphere with aviation systems, as the better definition and implementation of services to operators, and as the collection and interpretation of data for establishing operational criteria, relating the total meteorological inputs from the atmospheric sciences to the needs of aviation communities

Flow and fracture of ice and ice mixtures

Frozen volatiles make up an important volume fraction of the low density moons of the outer solar system. Understanding the tectonic history of the surfaces of these moons, as well as the evolution of their interiors, requires knowledge of the mechanical strength of these icy materials under the appropriate planetary conditions (temperature, hydrostatic pressure, strain rate). Ongoing lab research is being conducted to measure mechanical properties of several different ices under conditions that faithfully reproduce condition both at the moons' surfaces (generally low temperature, to about 100 K, and low pressures) and in the deep interiors (warmer temperatures, pressures to thousands of atmospheres). Recent progress is reported in two different phases of the work: rheology of ices in the NH3-H2O system at temperatures and strain rates lower than ever before explored, with application to the ammonia-rich moons of Saturn and Uranus; and the water ice I yields II phase transformation, which not only applies directly to process deep in the interiors of Ganymede and Callisto, but holds implications for deep terrestrial earthquakes as well

When would the intellectual background make a difference? or professors have been important for a long time, but what kind of professors?

Medieval accounting history affords a fertile ground for studying the impact of the intellectual background on the development of accounting itself. In such a study, four hypotheses can be proposed: that the intellectual background affects accounting only when it reaches out towards accounting practice; that this outreach occurs only when intellectuals have direct, personal contact with accounting practice; that developments in law, philosophy, and related humanities are important; and that developments in mathematics are not important

Introduction of Arabic numerals in European accounting

    Get PDF
The general adoption of Arabic numerals by European bookkeepers occurred at least five hundred years after their introduction to the scholarly world. The early availability yet late adoption of this numeration is shown to be due to several factors, not least to interplay between the culture and cultural conservatism of clerks and the educational and intellectual changes of the early Italian Renaissance

Stacy Garrop\u27s settings of sonnets by Edna St. Vincent Millay: a conductor\u27s analysis

    Get PDF
Stacy Garrop is an emerging composer of choral and orchestral music. The focus of this research is to provide information on her career and compositional style and to provide a conductor’s analysis of six multi-movement a cappella works which set to music sonnets by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Works to be examined: Sonnets of Love and Chaos (2001) Sonnets of Vanity, Loss, and Rapture (2002) Sonnets of War and Mankind (2003) Sonnets of Desire, Longing, and Whimsy (2004) Sonnets of the Fatal Interview (2005) Sonnets of Beauty and Music (2006) The document is divided into nine chapters tracing the musical development of Stacy Garrop from the beginning of her musical education in elementary school to her current position as Associate Professor of Composition at Roosevelt University, and identifies influential musical moments in her career while providing insight into her compositional process. Furthermore, the document traces the career of Pulitzer Prize winning feminist American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. The focus of the monograph is to analyze the aforementioned choral works with consideration to formal structure, style, interpretation, and rehearsal considerations. Garrop sonnet settings are composed with Millay’s texts in mind. Meter is typically altered to allow for proper syllabic stress of the English language. Within each movement, careful attention is given to musically express the words of the sonnet. Garrop’s harmonic language is largely chromatic and is constructed around anchor pitches, often tonicized by duration or repetition rather than traditional cadential figures

    Creep of ice: Further studies

    Get PDF
Detailed studies have been done of ice creep as related to the icy satellites, Ganymede and Callisto. Included were: (1) the flow of high-pressure water ices II, III, and V, and (2) frictional sliding of ice I sub h. Work was also begun on the study of the effects of impurities on the flow of ice. Test results are summarized
