Leading nucleon and inelasticity in hadron-nucleus interactions

    Get PDF
We present in this paper a calculation of the average proton-nucleus ine- lasticity. Using an Iterative Leading Particle Model and the Glauber model, we relate the leading particle distribution in nucleon-nucleus interactions with the respective one in nucleon-proton collisions. To describe the leading particle distribution in nucleon-proton collisions, we use the Regge-Mueller formalism. To appear in Journal of Physics G.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

Sensitive Product Designation in the Doha Round: The Case of Rice

    Get PDF
Effects of sensitive product designation in WTO trade reform on the international rice market are analyzed. General and partial equilibrium frameworks are used. Results suggest large impacts. Among exporters, China and the U.S., major suppliers of the Japanese and South Korean markets, are most negatively affected.Crop Production/Industries,

“It’s not like family, it is family”: reflections on a mentoring program for boys of color

Early adolescence is a time of great potential and vulnerability, especially for boys of color. Research is replete with examples of how mentoring can help young people through this challenging period, but less is known about what students themselves want from such relationships. Tina Durand interviewed and conducted focus groups with boys of color participating in an after-school mentoring program to learn what they valued in a mentor. Common themes included mentors’ ability to relate to students; their unconditional support; their affirmation of students’ best traits, especially in the face of racial stereotypes; and their ability to inspire students.Accepted manuscrip

A Cost-Effectiveness Study of Animal Disease Eradication Strategies: Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Ireland

    Get PDF
The primary focus of this poster paper is to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of alternative control strategies for a number of simulated outbreaks of Foot-and-Mouth disease (FMD) in four agriculturally diverse Irish regions, examining for the first time, the potential role of emergency vaccination in the country. With the increasing threat of transboundary animal diseases due to globalisation, wider market integration and increased animal movement it is important that such an evaluation of control and eradication strategies be undertaken and contingency plans be put in place. The new EU Directive (2003/85/EC) on FMD control permits the use of emergency vaccination as part of an FMD control strategy. The slaughter of infected animals and "dangerous contacts" (susceptible animals on epidemiologically linked holdings) remains the principal tool for tackling an outbreak, but the potential use of vaccination as an adjunct to the basic culling policy is now being considered. Using an integrated approach, combining an epidemiological model and an economic model, alternative control strategies are compared here during hypothetical outbreaks using a computer-simulation model and their cost-effectiveness assessed. The study provides outputs in terms of a range of epidemiological, economic and resource requirement measures under a wide range of different scenarios for each of the alternative control strategies.Foot-and-Mouth disease, control strategies, transboundary animal diseases, emergency vaccination, computer simulation, cost-effectiveness, Livestock Production/Industries, Q1, Q17, Q58,

    L’Orphée rouge : 750 av. J.-C.

Different artefacts, similarly linked to legends and rituals, are studied with regard to their theatricality: masks, partitions, petroglyphs and sculptures. Using recent paleographic studies and accounts of observers of the time, this essay intends to shed some light on certain "actions" of the First Nations peoples in New France
