The dangers of carbon-centric conservation for biodiversity: a case study in the Andes

Carbon-centric conservation strategies such as the United Nation’s program to Reduce CO2 Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+), are expected to simultaneously reduce net global CO2 emissions and mitigate species extinctions in regions with high endemism and diversity, such as the Tropical Andes Biodiversity Hotspot. Using data from the northern Andes, we show, however, that carbon-focused conservation strategies may potentially lead to increased risks of species extinctions if there is displacement (i.e., “leakage”) of land-use changes from forests with large aboveground biomass stocks but relatively poor species richness and low levels of endemism, to forests with lower biomass stocks but higher species richness and endemism, as are found in the Andean highlands (especially low-biomass non-tree growth forms such as herbs and epiphytes that are often overlooked in biological inventories). We conclude that despite the considerable potential benefits of REDD+ and other carbon-centric conservation strategies, there is still a need to develop mechanisms to safeguard against possible negative effects on biodiversity in situations where carbon stocks do not covary positively with species diversity and endemism

Where are the tropical plants? A call for better inclusion of tropical plants in studies investigating and predicting the effects of climate change

Tropical plant species are systematically underrepresented in large-scale analyses or synthesis looking at the potential effects of global climate change.  The reason being that we simply don’t know enough about the distributions and ecologies of most tropical plant species to predict their fate under climate change. This gaping hole in our knowledge is extremely worrisome given the high diversity of tropical plants, the crucial roles that they play in supporting global diversity and ecosystem function, and the elevated threats that climate change may pose to tropical species in general.  </p

Remoción de hierro y manganeso en aguas subterráneas mediante doble infiltración con flujo a presión: Caso El Hormiguero - Cali

A nivel mundial existen muchas comunidades que captan aguas subterráneas para diversos usos y principalmente como fuente de agua para consumo humano, sin embargo, estas aguas presentan problemas de calidad principalmente en cuanto a elevadas concentraciones de hierro y manganeso, que al oxidarse por acción del aire y/o un oxidante, se precipitan y producen depósitos rojo-anaranjado o negros, creando problemas de calidad, hidráulicos, económicos y sociales al sistema de abasto. Adicionalmente generan color, sabor y olor al agua haciéndola indeseable para el consumo sin previo tratamiento. La cabecera del corregimiento El Hormiguero, lugar donde se desarrolló la presente investigación, no escapa a estas dificultades, el sistema de abasto suministra agua con valores promedio de concentración de hierro total de 0,59 mg/L, requiriendo de manera prioritaria mejorar y complementar el proceso de tratamiento. Por tal motivo, se realizó está investigación con el propósito de encontrar la mejor alternativa de tratamiento en la remoción de hierro y manganeso, mediante una planta piloto con flujo a presión, adecuándose a las condiciones de la comunidad, en cuanto a bajos costos de operación y mantenimiento, sin utilización de medios secuestrantes o acondicionados, tecnología de fácil control y seguimiento, así como, bajo consumo de energía eléctrica. La planta piloto consistió de un aireador, seguido de un tanque de contacto, un clarificador de contacto (gravas) y un filtro rápido. Se evaluaron dos configuraciones diferentes para el clarificador y el filtro rápido, a las velocidades de 3, 6 y 12 m/h, encontrándose que la velocidad de 3 m/h, presentaba un comportamiento muy similar a la de 6 m/h. Al realizar los ensayos respectivos los parámetros de Fe, Mn, alcalinidad, fosfatos, nitratos, cloruros, oxígeno disuelto y pH cumplieron con los valores establecidos por el Decreto 1575/2007, para calidad de agua potable. Sin embargo la turbiedad y el color estuvieron por encima de los valores establecidos en este decreto, por esta razón fue necesario aplicar cloruro férrico, como ayudante de coagulación, para disminuir estos parámetros a valores admisibles, logrando de esta manera disminuir la turbiedad a valores menores de 1 UNT, el color a menos de 15 UPC y obtener valores para Fe menores de 0.04 mg/L y el Mn menores de 0.03 mg/L. La mejor velocidad de tratamiento encontrada en la investigación fue de 12 m/h, obteniendo remociones de hierro total del 98.3%, hierro disuelto del 100% y de 88.2% para el manganes

La iglesia, testigo y constructora de esperanza en el mundo de hoy

Many situations and events which have taken place by the end of the last century and nowadays have pushed men and women into despair, not only abroad but also in our country. In this context the author asks himself if the Church has still something to say and to offer as a witness of hope in times of crisis. Is the Church able to say now a credible word and strong enough to convince men and women that they may still have hope? Could men and women, and ourColombian people, in particular, be able to put all their hopes in the Church as being the herald of Jesus Christ, our hope? (cf. Tim 1,1). Following the author, the Church has to be what she is called to be by the formal will of his founder. There is no other way for her to be an authentic space and builder of hope.Después de repasar algunos hechos, situaciones y acontecimientos, que desde finales del siglo pasado y comienzos de este siglo XXI han llegado a producir una verdadera crisis de esperanza entre los hombres y mujeres de hoy, tanto en el mundo como en nuestro país, el autor se pregunta si la Iglesia tiene algo que decir y ofrecer, como testigo de la esperanza, en estos tiempos de crisis: ¿Puede hoy la Iglesia decir una palabra creíble y ofrecer, a través ella, razones para que los hombres y mujeres de hoy puedan seguir esperando?¿Qué puede esperar legítimamente la humanidad y, en concreto, nuestro pueblo colombiano, de la Iglesia como pregonera del anuncio de que Cristo Jesús es nuestra esperanza (cf. 1 Tim, 1, 1)? Piensa el autor que la Iglesia está llamada a ser lo que ella, por deseo expreso de su fundador, tiene que ser, y así y sólo así, ella podrá constituirse en un auténtico espacio de esperanza y en constructora de la misma para el mundo de hoy

La cristología en el documento de aparecida un camino desde Medellín a aparecida

After a short survey of the Christology in the Medellín, Puebla and Santo Domingo documents, this article deals with recent christological emphasis in the recent Document of Aparecida. The author believes that this document is in harmony with the primitive Christology of the New Testament which describes Jesus as the “Living One”, the “Lord of Life” and fountain of life. By doing so, the document proposes the “encounter” with Jesus as the key to any kind of discipleship and mission in the Church. It means, in fact, an “encounter” which gives the disciple overflowing “Life” while the thankful and joyful disciple,conscious of such gift, takes courage to be a missionary who announces life and brings life to persons and peoples of Latin America and the Antillean islands.Después de un breve recorrido por la cristología contenida en los documentos de Medellín, Puebla y Santo Domingo, el artículo centra su atención en los énfasis cristológicos del reciente documento de Aparecida. Según el autor, este documento, en sintonía con la primigenia cristología neotestamentaria, designa a Jesús como “el Viviente”, “Señor de la vida” y fuente de la misma. Esta forma de entender a Jesús le permite al documento plantear el “encuentro” con él como la clave de todo discipulado y misión de la Iglesia. Se trata de un “encuentro” que produce sobreabundancia de “Vida” en el discípulo y que, por exceso de gratitud y alegría por el don recibido, genera un aliento misionero que lleva a anunciar la vida y a producir vida en las personas y pueblos que conforman el continente latinoamericano y caribeño

Este trabajo es el fruto de una estrategia didáctica de investigación formativa en la que el docente guía a cinco grupos de la asignatura Comunicación y Sociedad para que, acudiendo a elementos propios del método científico, efectúen una observación crítica de las plataformas sociales que habitualmente emplean para informarse. El ejercicio pretendió que los estudiantes se ejercitaran en el trabajo colaborativo, aprendieran a investigar investigando y aplicaran en sus vidas cotidianas conceptos propios del curso, en este caso la identidad y los medios sociales

Correlation between the number of interstitial neurons of the white matter and number of neurons within cortical layers: Histological analyses in postnatal macaque

We have examined the number and distribution of NeuN‐immunoreactive cortical white matter interstitial cells (WMICs) and compared them to the neurons in layers 1–6 across the overlying cortex in coronal sections from postnatal macaques. The data have been gathered from over 300 selected regions at gyral crowns, at sulci, and at linear regions of the cortex where we also determined cortical layer thicknesses: standard thicknesses and tangential thicknesses. Cortical thicknesses and cell numbers showed variability according to gyral, linear, or sulcal regions. In spite of these variations, our standardized cell numbers in layers 1 to 6b and interstitial cells underlying layer 6b‐white matter boundary have shown a consistent correlation between the number of WMICs and the number of layer 5 and 6a cortical neurons on all cortical regions studied: for each WMIC, there are on the order of five cortical neurons in layer 5 and approximately three cortical neurons in layer 6a, irrespective of the origins of the selected cortical area or whether they are from gyral, linear, or sulcal regions. We propose that the number of interstitial neurons in the postnatal macaque cortex is correlated to the density of neurons within layers 5 and 6a and, from a clinical perspective, the change in density or distribution of interstitial neurons in schizophrenia or epilepsy may in fact be linked to the number of layers 5 and 6a neurons

Agro-smart Caribe: Soil moisture measurement system

Advances in information and communication technologies provide precision agriculture with more efficient tools for agricultural monitoring systems and the possibility of crop irrigation automation. This paper presents the implementation of a crop field monitoring system based on wireless sensor networks (WSN) with moisture detectors, which are remotely controlled for data collection. The implemented WSN performs information gathering functions from the sensor nodes to the base station. The system is integrated into the internet cloud and together with the hardware and software configuration, adequate energy efficiency is obtained
