Persistence, loss and gain : characterising mature green roof vegetation by functional composition
Like any constructed ecosystem, the vegetation of extensive green roofs (EGRs) will change over time. Although this may influence the desired function and performance, little work has examined the floristic dynamism of EGRs over the long-term. Variations in species composition may be associated with original species (persistent or lost), colonisers (gained), or the effects of spatial heterogeneity. This paper reports on floristic variation of two unmanaged German EGRs twenty years after installation. To evaluate floristic change, the analyses focused on functional composition and plant strategies sensu Grime's CSR theory, referring to the basic adaptive strategies of competition, stress-tolerance and ruderality, and their derivatives. With reference to original documentation, less than half the original species persisted. In spite of the losses, both roofs had entire cover, or nearly so, thanks to colonising species. The generalist strategy (CSR strategists) was the most important functional trait in the observed vegetation, followed by stress-tolerance and then by variations in stress-tolerant ruderality. The functional composition of colonising species was chiefly ruderals, followed by stress tolerators and generalists. The drivers behind these changes relate to the pressures of stress, disturbance and competition, as well as spatial heterogeneity and strategies for dispersal and regeneration, seedbank and propagule sources. This study suggests that long-term floristic diversity may be facilitated by ensuring a diversity of traits and species from the start, by providing spatial heterogeneity, and by considering the mechanisms that support persistence and those which determine colonisation
Temporal dynamics of the shrub and herbaceous layer of an area of moist grassland in Alto Paraíso de Goiás, Brazil
Este trabalho avaliou a dinâmica estrutural e fl orística de uma comunidade de espécies herbáceo-arbustivas
de uma área de campo limpo úmido em Alto Paraíso de Goiás, o primeiro inventário realizado em 2000 (T0) e o
segundo em 2007 (T1). A diversidade de Shannon entre os períodos foi comparada pelo teste-t de Hutcheson e a
similaridade fl orística, pelo índice de similaridade de Chao-Sørensen. As relações fl orísticas e a cobertura, entre os
períodos e as linhas, foram avaliadas por meio de análises de correspondência retifi cada (DCA). Foram amostradas
98 espécies, 88 no T0 e 67 no T1, sendo 31 exclusivas do T0 e 10 do T1. A diversidade fl orística na comunidade
foi elevada nos dois períodos, porém diferente entre esses (t = 7,12; p < 0,001), devido a variação no número e
cobertura das espécies. A similaridade entre os dois inventários foi alta (Chao-Sørensen ± IC = 0,841 ± 0,074). A
ordenação por DCA indicou relações entre a composição fl orística e a cobertura com o gradiente de umidade e
de matéria orgânica no solo identifi cados em T0. Houve modifi cações nas linhas em zonas sazonais, as quais se
tornaram mais semelhantes às linhas constantemente saturadas por água. Em um intervalo de sete anos o campo
limpo úmido apresentou mudanças na composição fl orística e, principalmente na estrutura devido o aumento da
cobertura de espécies perenes, cespitosas e entouceiradas, que foram favorecidas pela maior umidade no solo em
resposta à elevação da pluviosidade da região. __________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTTh is study evaluated the fl oristic and structural dynamics of a community of herbaceous-shrub species
in an area of moist grassland in Alto Paraíso de Goiás. Th e fi rst inventory was undertaken in 2000 (T0) and the
second in 2007 (T1). Shannon’s diversity between the periods was compared by Hutchesons´s t-test, and the
fl oristic similarity by the Chao-Sørensen similarity index. Floristic composition and cover, between periods and
lines, were evaluated by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). We sampled 98 species, 88 at T0 and 67 at T1;
31 were unique to T0 and 10 to T1. Floristic diversity in the community was high in both periods, but diff erent
between them (t = 7.12, p <0.001), due to variation in species number and coverage. Similarity between the two
surveys was high (Chao-Sørensen CI = ± 0.841 ± 0.074). Th e DCA ordination indicated relationships between the
fl oristic composition and cover with a gradient of moisture and organic matter in the soil identifi ed in T0. Th ere
were changes in the lines in the seasonal zones, which became more similar in those constantly saturated with
water. During an interval of seven years the moist grassland showed changes in fl oristic composition and mainly
in structure due to increased cover of the clumped tussock perennial species, which were favored by higher soil
moisture due to high rainfall in the region
Failure of ipratropium bromide to modify the diurnal variation of asthma in asthmatic children.
Thirty one children with asthma were given 40 micrograms of ipratropium bromide and identical placebo by inhalation three times a day in a double blind, randomised crossover study to test the ability of an anticholinergic drug to modify the diurnal variation in airway calibre and bronchial reactivity. Subjects measured peak expiratory flow rate approximately eight hourly, before and after inhaled salbutamol, for four week periods. Paired t tests and cosinor analysis were used to assess the diurnal variation in airway calibre from the peak expiratory flow rate recorded before salbutamol and to assess the diurnal variation in bronchodilator responsiveness from the increase in peak expiratory flow rate after salbutamol. Maintenance treatment with ipratropium bromide 40 micrograms three times daily reduced the provocative dose of histamine which caused a 20% fall in FEV1 (geometric mean PD20 = 0.78 v 0.49 mg/ml, p less than 0.05), despite an eight to 12 hour gap between the last dose of ipratropium and histamine challenge. It did not, however, diminish the diurnal variation in airway calibre (mean amplitude = 12.7 v 10.1) or in bronchodilator responsiveness (mean amplitude = 62.4 v 63.5). There was no improvement in the clinical state of subjects while they were taking ipratropium bromide

The promotion of grassland forb abundance: A chemical or biological solution?
Techniques that increase the biodiversity value of species-poor grassland are required if conservation targets aimed at reversing the decline in species-rich grassland are to be met. This study investigated the diversification of swards dominated by Lolium perenne by testing the efficacies of two treatments applied to reduce competitive exclusion of species introduced as seed. The 'biological' treatment was the addition of the hemiparasitic plant species introduced as seed. The 'biological' treatment was the application of a selective graminicide, fluazifop-P-butyl (Fusilade 250EW). Changes in plant community composition were monitored for a period of 2 years. Values of plant species richness increased significantly between years regardless of treatment, but to a greater extent in plots sown with R. minor. The number of established sown species and their richness and tended to promote unsown species rather than those introduced as seed. Overall, the R. minor treatment was associated with the greatest impact on sward composition, facilitating establishment and development of the introduced species and promoting forb abundance.
