ALMA observations of lensed Herschel sources: testing the dark matter halo paradigm
With the advent of wide-area submillimetre surveys, a large number of high-redshift gravitationally lensed dusty star-forming galaxies have been revealed. Because of the simplicity of the selection criteria for candidate lensed sources in such surveys, identified as those with S500 μm > 100 mJy, uncertainties associated with the modelling of the selection function are expunged. The combination of these attributes makes submillimetre surveys ideal for the study of strong lens statistics. We carried out a pilot study of the lensing statistics of submillimetre-selected sources by making observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) of a sample of strongly lensed sources selected from surveys carried out with the Herschel Space Observatory. We attempted to reproduce the distribution of image separations for the lensed sources using a halo mass function taken from a numerical simulation that contains both dark matter and baryons. We used three different density distributions, one based on analytical fits to the haloes formed in the EAGLE simulation and two density distributions [Singular Isothermal Sphere (SIS) and SISSA] that have been used before in lensing studies. We found that we could reproduce the observed distribution with all three density distributions, as long as we imposed an upper mass transition of ∼1013 M⊙ for the SIS and SISSA models, above which we assumed that the density distribution could be represented by a Navarro–Frenk–White profile. We show that we would need a sample of ∼500 lensed sources to distinguish between the density distributions, which is practical given the predicted number of lensed sources in the Herschel surveys
Grouping practices in the primary school: what influences change?
During the 1990s, there was considerable emphasis on promoting particular kinds of pupil grouping as a means of raising educational standards. This survey of 2000 primary schools explored the extent to which schools had changed their grouping practices in responses to this, the nature of the changes made and the reasons for those changes. Forty eight percent of responding schools reported that they had made no change. Twenty two percent reported changes because of the literacy hour, 2% because of the numeracy hour, 7% because of a combination of these and 21% for other reasons. Important influences on decisions about the types of grouping adopted were related to pupil learning and differentiation, teaching, the implementation of the national literacy strategy, practical issues and school self-evaluation
No cold dust within the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A
A large amount (about three solar masses) of cold (18 K) dust in the
prototypical type II supernova remnant Cassiopeia A was recently reported. It
was concluded that dust production in type II supernovae can explain how the
large quantities (10^8 solar masses) of dust observed in the most distant
quasars could have been produced within only 700 million years after the Big
Bang. Foreground clouds of interstellar material, however, complicate the
interpretation of the earlier submillimetre observations of Cas A. Here we
report far-infrared and molecular line observations that demonstrate that most
of the detected submillimetre emission originates from interstellar dust in a
molecular cloud complex located in the line of sight between the Earth and Cas
A, and is therefore not associated with the remnant. The argument that type II
supernovae produce copious amounts of dust is not supported by the case of Cas
A, which previously appeared to provide the best evidence for this possibility.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Parathyroid hormone related peptide and receptor expression in paired primary prostate cancer and bone metastases
Parathyroid hormone-related peptide is a regulatory protein implicated in the pathogenesis of bone metastases, particularly in breast carcinoma. Parathyroid hormone-related peptide is widely expressed in primary prostate cancers but there are few reports of its expression in prostatic metastases. The aim of this study was to examine the expression of parathyroid hormone-related peptide and its receptor in matched primary and in bone metastatic tissue from patients with untreated adenocarcinoma of the prostate. Eight-millimetre trephine iliac crest bone biopsies containing metastatic prostate cancer were obtained from 14 patients from whom matched primary tumour tissue was also available. Histological grading was performed by an independent pathologist. The cellular location of mRNA for parathyroid hormone-related peptide and parathyroid hormone-related peptide receptor was identified using in situ hybridization with 35S-labelled probe. Expression of parathyroid hormone-related peptide and its receptor was described as uniform, heterogenous or negative within the tumour cell population. Parathyroid hormone-related peptide expression was positive in 13 out of 14 primary tumours and in all 14 metastases. Receptor expression was evident in all 14 primaries and 12 out of 14 metastases. Co-expression of parathyroid hormone-related peptide and parathyroid hormone-related peptide receptor was common (13 primary tumours, 12 metastases). The co-expression of parathyroid hormone-related peptide and its receptor suggest that autocrine parathyroid hormone-related peptide mediated stimulation may be a mechanism of escape from normal growth regulatory pathways. The high frequency of parathyroid hormone-related peptide expression in metastases is consistent with a role in the pathogenesis of bone metastases
A stubbornly large mass of cold dust in the ejecta of Supernova 1987A
We present new Herschel photometric and spectroscopic observations of
Supernova 1987A, carried out in 2012. Our dedicated photometric measurements
provide new 70 micron data and improved imaging quality at 100 and 160 micron
compared to previous observations in 2010. Our Herschel spectra show only weak
CO line emission, and provide an upper limit for the 63 micron [O I] line flux,
eliminating the possibility that line contaminations distort the previously
estimated dust mass. The far-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) is
well fitted by thermal emission from cold dust. The newly measured 70 micron
flux constrains the dust temperature, limiting it to nearly a single
temperature. The far-infrared emission can be fitted by 0.5+-0.1 Msun of
amorphous carbon, about a factor of two larger than the current nucleosynthetic
mass prediction for carbon. The observation of SiO molecules at early and late
phases suggests that silicates may also have formed and we could fit the SED
with a combination of 0.3 Msun of amorphous carbon and 0.5 Msun of silicates,
totalling 0.8 Msun of dust. Our analysis thus supports the presence of a large
dust reservoir in the ejecta of SN 1987A. The inferred dust mass suggests that
supernovae can be an important source of dust in the interstellar medium, from
local to high-redshift galaxies.Comment: ApJ accepted, 8 page
Structural Insights into TIR Domain Specificity of the Bridging Adaptor Mal in TLR4 Signaling
MyD88 adaptor-like protein (Mal) is a crucial adaptor that acts as a bridge to recruit the MyD88 molecule to activated TLR4 receptors in response to invading pathogens. The specific assembly of the Toll/interleukin-1 receptor (TIR) domains of TLR4, Mal and MyD88 is responsible for proper signal transduction in the TLR4 signaling pathway. However, the molecular mechanism for the specificity of these TIR domains remains unclear. Here, we present the crystal structure of the TIR domain of the human Mal molecule (Mal-TIR) at a resolution of 2.4 Å. Unexpectedly, Mal-TIR exhibits an extraordinarily long AB loop, but no αB helix or BB loop, distinguishing it from other TIR domains. More importantly, the Mal-TIR AB loop is capable of mediating direct binding to the TIR domains of TLR4 and MyD88 simultaneously. We also found that Mal-TIR can form a back-to-back dimer that may resemble the dimeric assembly of the entire Mal molecule. Our data demonstrate the bridge role of the Mal-TIR domain and provide important information about TIR domain specificity
