Effects of Participation in the WIC Food Assistance Program on Childrenâs Health and Development: Evidence from NLSY Children
This study investigates the effects of maternal participation in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) on birth weight, motor and social skills, and temperament for a national sample of children born between 1990 and 1996 to women participating in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Sibling fixed effect models are used to account for persistent differences in difficult to measure characteristics of mothers that affect participation in the program. Results indicate that prenatal WIC participation has positive effects on infant birth weight. Fixed effect, but not OLS, estimates suggest that prenatal WIC participation is associated with more positive child temperament.

Using shared goal setting to improve access and equity: a mixed methods study of the Good Goals intervention
Background: Access and equity in childrenâs therapy services may be improved by directing cliniciansâ use of resources toward specific goals that are important to patients. A practice-change intervention (titled âGood Goalsâ) was designed to achieve this. This study investigated uptake, adoption, and possible effects of that intervention in childrenâs occupational therapy services.
Methods: Mixed methods case studies (n = 3 services, including 46 therapists and 558 children) were conducted. The intervention was delivered over 25 weeks through face-to-face training, team workbooks, and âtools for changeâ. Data were collected before, during, and after the intervention on a range of factors using interviews, a focus group, case note analysis, routine data, document analysis, and researchersâ observations.
Results: Factors related to uptake and adoptions were: mode of intervention delivery, competing demands on therapistsâ time, and leadership by service manager. Service managers and therapists reported that the intervention: helped therapists establish a shared rationale for clinical decisions; increased clarity in service provision; and improved interactions with families and schools. During the study period, therapistsâ behaviours changed: identifying goals, odds ratio 2.4 (95% CI 1.5 to 3.8); agreeing goals, 3.5 (2.4 to 5.1); evaluating progress, 2.0 (1.1 to 3.5). Childrenâs LoT decreased by two months [95% CI â8 to +4 months] across the services. Cost per therapist trained ranged from ÂŁ1,003 to ÂŁ1,277, depending upon service size and therapistsâ salary bands.
Conclusions: Good Goals is a promising quality improvement intervention that can be delivered and adopted in practice and may have benefits. Further research is required to evaluate its: (i) impact on patient outcomes, effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and (ii) transferability to other clinical contexts

Extending electron orbital precession to the molecular case: Can orbital alignment be used to observe wavepacket dynamics?
The complexity of ultrafast molecular photoionization presents an obstacle to
the modelling of pump-probe experiments. Here, a simple optimized model of
atomic rubidium is combined with a molecular dynamics model to predict
quantitatively the results of a pump-probe experiment in which long range
rubidium dimers are first excited, then ionized after a variable delay. The
method is illustrated by the outline of two proposed feasible experiments and
the calculation of their outcomes. Both of these proposals use Feshbach 87Rb2
molecules. We show that long-range molecular pump-probe experiments should
observe spin-orbit precession given a suitable pump-pulse, and that the
associated high-frequency beat signal in the ionization probability decays
after a few tens of picoseconds. If the molecule was to be excited to only a
single fine structure state state, then a low-frequency oscillation in the
internuclear separation would be detectable through the timedependent
ionization cross section, giving a mechanism that would enable observation of

Student Expectations Regarding Online Learning: Implications For Distance Learning Programs
What are student expectations in a traditional course versus a distance learning course? The authors analyze student course selection and expected outcomes from data collected in an undergraduate marketing course at a public university in the Northeast. Key findings reveal that students generally have a favorable predisposition towards online coursework despite their beliefs that online courses require more work and have lower learning outcomes. Further, this case study provides an initial step in better understanding student expectations in online courses as well as in the traditional classroom
AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE NORTH DAKOTA CATTLE INDUSTRY
The analysis was conducted to evaluate the impacts of both the Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 (FAIR) and the cattle cycle on the livestock enterprises. The North Dakota Representative Farm and Ranch Model, which uses the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute price projections as an input, was developed and used for this analysis. Net farm income and farm debt-to-asset ratios for the average and large beef cattle farms were analyzed. The U.S. cattle industry has been characterized by cyclical variations in production and prices. It appears that the current cattle cycle is in the final stages of expansion. Cattle numbers continued to increase during 1995, but at a slow rate. Industry estimates are that the bottom of cattle prices will occur in late 1996 or 1997. Price recovery is projected to start sometime in 1998 as inventory numbers decline. Prices are forecast to rise through 2002. Net farm income for the representative beef cattle farms is projected to follow the cattle cycle with the lowest net incomes during 1997- 1999. Net farm income for most representative beef cattle farms recovers by 2002-2003. The debt-to-asset ratios for the representative beef cattle farms will likely rise throughout the forecast period. The Impact of Shape on the Perception of Euler Diagrams
Euler diagrams are often used for visualizing data collected into sets. However, there is a significant lack of guidance regarding graphical choices for Euler diagram layout. To address this deficiency, this paper asks the question `does the shape of a closed curve affect a user's comprehension of an Euler diagram?' By empirical study, we establish that curve shape does indeed impact on understandability. Our analysis of performance data indicates that circles perform best, followed by squares, with ellipses and rectangles jointly performing worst. We conclude that, where possible, circles should be used to draw effective Euler diagrams. Further, the ability to discriminate curves from zones and the symmetry of the curve shapes is argued to be important. We utilize perceptual theory to explain these results. As a consequence of this research, improved diagram layout decisions can be made for Euler diagrams whether they are manually or automatically drawn
A Damping of the de Haas-van Alphen Oscillations in the superconducting state
Deploying a recently developed semiclassical theory of quasiparticles in the
superconducting state we study the de Haas-van Alphen effect. We find that the
oscillations have the same frequency as in the normal state but their amplitude
is reduced. We find an analytic formulae for this damping which is due to
tunnelling between semiclassical quasiparticle orbits comprising both
particle-like and hole-like segments. The quantitative predictions of the
