Laser Based Underwater Communication Systems
We report on recent progress in the field of visible light communications including direct modulation of blue laser devices at data rates beyond 10 Gbit/s, and the transmission of 2.5 Gbit/s OOK data through water. We also discuss the advantages of operating with single mode laser devices and matched filtering at the receiver in the context of applications with significant solar background. The system performance for two types of direct-detection receivers, a PIN detector and less conventional silicon Photomultiplier technology will be presented
Diagnostic Imaging in the Medical Support of the Future Missions to the Moon
This viewgraph presentation is a course that reviews the diagnostic imaging techniques available for medical support on the future moon missions. The educational objectives of the course are to: 1) Update the audience on the curreultrasound imaging in space flight; 2) Discuss the unique aspects of conducting ultrasound imaging on ISS, interplanetary transit, ultrasound imaging on ISS, interplanetary transit, and lunar surface operations; and 3) Review preliminary data obtained in simulations of medical imaging in lunar surface operations
Timing Noise in SGR 1806-20
We have phase connected a sequence of RXTE PCA observations of SGR 1806-20
covering 178 days. We find a simple secular spin-down model does not adequately
fit the data. The period derivative varies gradually during the observations
between 8.1 and 11.7 * 10^-11 s/s (at its highest, ~40% larger than the long
term trend), while the average burst rate as seen with BATSE drops throughout
the time interval. The phase residuals give no compelling evidence for
periodicity, but more closely resemble timing noise as seen in radio pulsars.
The magnitude of the timing noise, however, is large relative to the noise
level typically found in radio pulsars. Combining these results with the noise
levels measured for some AXPs, we find all magnetar candidates have \Delta_8
values larger than those expected from a simple extrapolation of the
correlation found in radio pulsars. We find that the timing noise in SGR
1806-20 is greater than or equal to the levels found in some accreting systems
(e.g., Vela X-1, 4U 1538-52 and 4U 1626-67), but the spin-down of SGR 1806-20
has thus far maintained coherence over 6 years. Alternatively, an orbital model
with a period P_orb = 733 days provides a statistically acceptable fit to the
data. If the phase residuals are created by Doppler shifts from a
gravitationally bound companion, then the allowed parameter space for the mass
function (small) and orbital separation (large) rule out the possibility of
accretion from the companion sufficient to power the persistent emission from

Lateral line morphology, sensory perception and collective behaviour in African cichlid fish
The lateral line system of fishes provides cues for collective behaviour, such as shoaling, but it remains unclear how anatomical lateral line variation leads to behavioural differences among species. Here we studied associations between lateral line morphology and collective behaviour using two morphologically divergent species and their second-generation hybrids. We identify collective behaviours associated with variation in canal and superficial lateral line morphology, with closer proximities to neighbouring fish associated with larger canal pore sizes and fewer superficial neuromasts. A mechanistic understanding of the observed associations was provided by hydrodynamic modelling of an artificial lateral line sensor, which showed that simulated canal-based neuromasts were less susceptible to saturation during unidirectional movement than simulated superficial neuromasts, while increasing the canal pore size of the simulated lateral line sensor elevated sensitivity to vortices shed by neighbouring fish. Our results propose a mechanism behind lateral line flow sensing during collective behaviour in fishes
Glacial and geomorphic effects of a supraglacial lake drainage and outburst event, Everest region, Nepal Himalaya
A set of supraglacial ponds filled rapidly between April and July 2017 on Changri Shar Glacier in the Everest region of Nepal, coalescing into a similar to 180 000 m(2) lake before sudden and complete drainage through Changri Shar and Khumbu glaciers (15-17 July). We use PlanetScope and Pleiades satellite orthoimagery to document the system's evolution over its very short filling period and to assess the glacial and proglacial effects of the outburst flood. We also use high-resolution stereo digital elevation models (DEMs) to complete a detailed analysis of the event's glacial and geomorphic effects. Finally, we use discharge records at a stream gauge 4 km downstream to refine our interpretation of the chronology and magnitude of the outburst. We infer largely subsurface drainage through both of the glaciers located on its flow path, and efficient drainage through the lower portion of Khumbu Glacier. The drainage and subsequent outburst of 1.36 +/- 0.19 x 10(6) m(3) of impounded water had a clear geomorphic impact on glacial and proglacial topography, including deep incision and landsliding along the Changri Nup proglacial stream, the collapse of shallow englacial conduits near the Khumbu terminus and extensive, enhanced bank erosion at least as far as 11 km downstream below Khumbu Glacier. These sudden changes destroyed major trails in three locations, demonstrating the potential hazard that short-lived, relatively small glacial lakes pose
Systematic Investigation of the Permeability of Androgen Receptor PROTACs.
Bifunctional molecules known as PROTACs simultaneously bind an E3 ligase and a protein of interest to direct ubiquitination and clearance of that protein, and they have emerged in the past decade as an exciting new paradigm in drug discovery. In order to investigate the permeability and properties of these large molecules, we synthesized two panels of PROTAC molecules, constructed from a range of protein-target ligands, linkers, and E3 ligase ligands. The androgen receptor, which is a well-studied protein in the PROTAC field was used as a model system. Validation of On-Orbit Methodology for the Assessment of Cardiac Function and Changes in the Circulating Volume Using Ultrasound and Braslet-M Occlusion Cuffs
The objective of this joint U.S. - Russian project was the development and validation of an in-flight methodology to assess a number of cardiac and vascular parameters associated with circulating volume and its manipulation in long-duration space flight. Responses to modified Valsalva and Mueller maneuvers were measured by cardiac and vascular ultrasound (US) before, during, and after temporary volume reduction by means of Braslet-M thigh occlusion cuffs (Russia). Materials and Methods: The study protocol was conducted in 14 sessions on 9 ISS crewmembers, with an average exposure to microgravity of 122 days. Baseline cardiovascular measurements were taken by echocardiography in multiple modes (including tissue Doppler of both ventricles) and femoral and jugular vein imaging on the International Space Station (ISS). The Braslet devices were then applied and measurements were repeated after >10 minutes. The cuffs were then released and the hemodynamic recovery process was monitored. Modified Valsalva and Mueller maneuvers were used throughout the protocol. All US data were acquired by the HDI-5000 ultrasound system aboard the ISS (ATL/Philips, USA) during remotely guided sessions. The study protocol, including the use of Braslet-M for this purpose, was approved by the ISS Human Research Multilateral Review Board (HRMRB). Results: The effects of fluid sequestration on a number of echocardiographic and vascular parameters were readily detectable by in-flight US, as were responses to respiratory maneuvers. The overall volume status assessment methodology appears to be valid and practical, with a decrease in left heart lateral E (tissue Doppler) as one of the most reliable measures. Increase in the femoral vein cross-sectional areas was consistently observed with Braslet application. Other significant differences and trends within the extensive cardiovascular data were also observed. (Decreased - RV and LV preload indices, Cardiac Output, LV E all maneuvers, LV Stroke Volume). Conclusions: This Study: 1) Addressed specific aspects of operational space medicine and space physiology, including assessment of circulating volume disturbances 2) Expanded the applications of diagnostic ultrasound imaging and Doppler techniques in microgravity. 3) Used respiratory maneuvers against the background of acute circulating volume manipulations which appear to enhance our ability to noninvasively detect volume-dependency in a number of cardiac and vascular parameters. 4) Determined that Tei index is not clinically changed therefore contractility not altered in the face of reduced preload. 5) Determined that increased Femoral Vein Area indicating blood being sequestered in lower extremities correlates with reduced preload and cardiac output. 6) That Braslet may be the only feasible means of acutely treating high pressure pulmonary edema in reduced gravity environments
