Clubs de lectura
El Club de Lectura de la UC3M está
organizado por la Biblioteca y Espacio
Estudiantes, y ofrece encuentros para
grupos de entre ocho y dieciocho
participantes. Los clubs de lectura de Getafe y Leganés están en su séptimo año y el de Colmenarejo, en el tercero. Ignacio J. Onsager reciprocity in premelting solids
The diffusive motion of foreign particles dispersed in a premelting solid is analyzed within the framework of irreversible thermodynamics. We determine the mass diffusion coefficient, thermal diffusion coefficient and Soret coefficient of the particles in the dilute limit, and find good agreement with experimental data. In contrast to liquid suspensions, the unique nature of premelting solids allows us to derive an expression for the Dufour coefficient and independently verify the Onsager reciprocal relation coupling diffusion to the flow of heat

Cluster structure in stable and unstable nuclei
Cluster structure in stable and unstable nuclei has been studied. We report
recent developments of theoretical studies on cluster aspect, which is
essential for structure study of light unstable nuclei. We discuss negative
parity bands in even-even Be and Ne isotopes and show the importance of cluster
aspect. Three-body cluster structure and cluster crystallization are also
introduced. It was found that the coexistence of cluster and mean-field aspect
brings a variety of structures to unstable nuclei.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Euro. Phys. J.
Increasing compliance with wearing a medical device in children with autism
Health professionals often recommend the use of medical devices to assess the health, monitor
the well-being, or improve the quality of life of their patients. Children with autism may present
challenges in these situations as their sensory peculiarities may increase refusals to wear such
devices. To address this issue, we systematically replicated prior research by examining the
effects of differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) to increase compliance with
wearing a heart rate monitor in 2 children with autism. The intervention increased compliance to
100% for both participants when an edible reinforcer was delivered every 90 s. The results
indicate that DRO does not require the implementation of extinction to increase compliance with
wearing a medical device. More research is needed to examine whether the reinforcement
schedule can be further thinned
Howard R. DuFour: The Cold War Aerospace Technology History Project (Interview 1)
James Kohler interviewed Howard DuFour on May 17, 2006 for the Cold War Aerospace Technologies History Project. In the interview Mr. DuFour discusses his role in the development of military technology during the Cold War. This is the first of three interviews with Mr. DuFour
Testing interval forecasts: a GMM-based approach
This paper proposes a new evaluation framework for interval forecasts. Our model free test can be used to evaluate intervals forecasts and High Density Regions, potentially discontinuous and/or asymmetric. Using a simple J-statistic, based on the moments de ned by the orthonormal polynomials associated with the Binomial distribution, this new approach presents many advantages. First, its implementation is extremely easy. Second, it allows for a separate test for unconditional coverage, independence and conditional coverage hypotheses. Third, Monte-Carlo simulations show that for realistic sample sizes, our GMM test has good small-sample properties. These results are corroborated by an empirical application on SP500 and Nikkei stock market indexes. It con rms that using this GMM test leads to major consequences for the ex-post evaluation of interval forecasts produced by linear versus nonlinear models.Interval forecasts, High Density Region, GMM.

Adolescent Internet gambling: what do we actually know?
To date, little research has been done on the relationship between adolescent children and online gambling, especially regarding the conditions in which they can access e-gaming sites or the regularity with which they play. Professor Mark Griffiths, of Nottingham Trent University, examines how various studies, conducted in the EU and in the US, account for the links uniting adolescents and remote gaming
