The Links Between Migration, Poverty and Health: Evidence From Khayelitsha and Mitchell's Plain

    Get PDF
In the mid-1950s, the City of Cape Town was part of a wider area demarcated as a Coloured Labour Preference Area. The free movement of African people into the city was strictly controlled and the residential areas were segregated along racial lines. In terms of Apartheid's grand design, an area designated Mitchell's Plain was demarcated for occupation by Coloured people in 1973 while another designated Khayelitsha was allocated for African people. The two areas were incorporated in one magisterial district, Mitchell's Plain, in the mid-1980s. A sample survey of the area was conducted in late November and early December 2000 with a focus on labour market issues. Its aim was to capture occupants of households aged 18 or older. The survey data has been interrogated to describe the connections between migration, poverty and health in a city where recent rapid urbanisation is changing the demographic profile significantly. As a consequence, the need to provide adequate infrastructure, decent housing and employment poses a daunting challenge ten years after the new democracy has been ushered in.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF 800 DAYS OF SOLITUDE: A CONJURING: A PLAYWRITING THESIS

    Get PDF
This thesis document is a presentation of the process and production of my play, 800 Days of Solitude: A Conjuring, which was presented in the Moe Theater Lab March 22 through 25 2018. This play endeavored to tell the story of a young man who was wrongfully imprisoned, and then forced into solitary confinement. Chapter 1 contains a detailed account of the pre-writing process, including early inspirations, impressions of what the play might be, and character bios. Chapter 2 is a narrative account of the writing of 800 Days of Solitude: A Conjuring, along with key inspirations and how I used them to shape the text. Chapter 3 recounts the pre-production process, including production meetings with the director and design team, the process of auditions, and rehearsals. Chapter 4 discusses the production of 800 Days of Solitude: A Conjuring. Chapter 5 is the Conclusion, wherein I reflect on my time before SIU, as well as my time here. I then revisit my goals and weigh in on whether I achieved them. Then I speculate on what the future may bring. This is followed by the Works Cited. Appendix A contains the production script of 800 Days of Solitude: A Conjuring, followed by a gloss of terms. Appendix B contains an early draft of 800 Days of Solitude: A Conjuring

The Trouble I\u27ve Seen : Visions and Revisions of Bondage, Flight, and Freedom in Black American Autobiography.

This dissertation, an historical overview of black American autobiography from Frederick Douglass to Malcolm X, examines a recurring pattern and two related themes in the genre. Ever since the escaped slave narratives established bondage, flight, and freedom as the three-part pattern of their organization, black autobiographers have employed these same elements to tell their life stories. The creation of the free I is the pervasive theme of black American autobiography, freedom being won and the autobiographical self established through a symbolic struggle against and victory over a powerful father figure. This figure may be the paternalistic white culture in which the autobiographer lives as part of an oppressed minority, the autobiographer\u27s biological father, an older man who exerts great influence on the autobiographer\u27s thinking, or the autobiographer\u27s predecessor in the black autobiographical tradition. By striking out against the father, the autobiographer creates his own imaginative space and finds his individuality. Chapter One traces the creation of the three-part pattern and its perfection in Douglass\u27s Narrative. Booker T. Washington\u27s Up From Slavery is seen as an attempt by Washington to tame Douglass and to assume leadership of American blacks. Chapter Two examines W. E. B. Du Bois\u27s challenge to Washington for that leadership, detailing how the two men waged a long literary war for Douglass\u27s mantle. Richard Wright\u27s Black Boy is the subject of Chapter Three. Wright lashes out against white America for seeking to keep him in psychological bondage and traces his rebellion against the racist South and his flight to the North and artistic freedom. Chapter Four examines how James Baldwin attacks Wright and challenges him for artistic leadership among blacks; Eldridge Cleaver then uses similar tactics against Baldwin. Chapter Five treats The Autobiography of Malcolm X, examining Malcolm\u27s struggle for intellectual freedom once he is ousted from his once-secure identity as spiritual son and heir apparent to Elijah Muhammad. Alex Haley\u27s role as co-creator of the autobiography is also studied, and the dissertation concludes with a general treatment of black American autobiography\u27s relationship to black culture, American autobiography, and autobiography as a whole

Recognition of human interactions using limb-level feature points

    Get PDF
Human activity recognition is an emerging area of research in computer vision with applications in video surveillance, human-computer interaction, robotics, and video annotation. Despite a number of recent advances, there are still many opportunities for new developments, especially in the area of person-person and person-object interaction. Many proposed algorithms focus on recognizing solely single person, person-person or person-object activities. An algorithm which can recognize all three types would be a significant step toward the real-world application of this technology. This thesis investigates the design and implementation of such an algorithm. It utilizes background subtraction to extract the subjects in the scene, and pixel clustering to segment their image into body parts. A location-based feature identification algorithm extracts feature points from these segments and feeds them to a classifier which identifies videos as activities. Together these techniques comprise an algorithm that can recognize single person, person-person and person-object interactions. This algorithm\u27s performance was evaluated based on interactions in a new video dataset, demonstrating the effectiveness of using limb-level feature points as a method of identifying human interactions

High performance forward swept wing aircraft

    Get PDF
A high performance aircraft capable of subsonic, transonic and supersonic speeds employs a forward swept wing planform and at least one first and second solution ejector located on the inboard section of the wing. A high degree of flow control on the inboard sections of the wing is achieved along with improved maneuverability and control of pitch, roll and yaw. Lift loss is delayed to higher angles of attack than in conventional aircraft. In one embodiment the ejectors may be advantageously positioned spanwise on the wing while the ductwork is kept to a minimum
