Some remarks on applications of analogy within intercultural dialogue

    Get PDF
In this article I present some applications of analogy with reference to intercultural dialogue, firstly as a process in which the familiar structure of a direct experience in one situation improves awareness of an expected experience within another structure. Secondly, I follow the Enrique Dussel’s approach according to which where analogy is the key element of a true dialogue. In the paper conceptions of Ryszard Kapuściński, Martin Buber, Józef Tischner are presented in the context of intercultural dialogue and are applied to Yuko Abe’s analysis of students exchange experiences. In this article I present some applications of analogy with reference to intercultural dialogue, firstly as a process in which the familiar structure of a direct experience in one situation improves awareness of an expected experience within another structure.
Abstract

Backround

Conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) are a group of positional and geometric isomers of linoleic acid with proven beneficial influence on health. They show e.g. anticarcinogenic, antiobesity, and antiatherogenic effect. Milk, dairy products and meat of poligastric animals are their most valuable dietary sources, with cis-9, trans-11 CLA (RA - rumenic acid) being the predominant isomer. Dietary supplements with CLA became very popular, mainly among the overweight and bodybuilders.

The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the food supplements with conjugated linoleic acid on carcinogenesis in female Sprague-Dawley rats and evaluation of CLA and other fatty acids distribution in their bodies.

Animals were divided into four groups depending on the diet supplementation (oil or Bio-C.L.A. (Pharma Nord Denmark) given intragastrically) and presence or absence of carcinogenic agent (7,12-dimethylbenz[a]antharcene). Animals were decapitated at 21st week of experiment and serum and microsomes were extracted.

Results and conclusions

The mammary tumours (adenocarcinoma) occurred in groups treated with DMBA. Diet enriched with CLA decreased the cancer morbidity (67% in Bio-C.L.A. compared to 88% in oil) and delayed the cancer induction (p = 0.0018). There were no differences in body and organs weight.

The supplement used in the study was a mixture of several fatty acids with the greatest proportion of CLA isomers: trans-10, cis-12 (33%) and cis-9, trans-11 (31%). Both of them were present in tissues but the content of rumenic acid was greater. Dietary supplementation had also significant impact on other fatty acids content, both in serum and in microsomes.</p

PURPOSE: This study’s overarching aim was to explore public and professional understanding of child homicide, and its pre- and post-offence characteristics. Previous findings of child homicide studies have been challenged in this dissertation, such as for example: the public misconceptions of crime numbers and trends, parents as the most common perpetrators in child homicide offences, children under one as the age category in highest risk of homicide victimisation. In addition, a role of child homicide investigator and the challenges and pressures associated with the role, were explored throughout the study. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Dissertation consists of two studies. First one is conducted in a quantitative approach with the help of online questionnaires filled by 264 participants. The data is analysed using SPSS. Second study uses qualitative approach and four semi-structured interviews are conducted with police homicide investigators. Thematic analysis is used to analyse the interviews. FINDINGS: The findings present a clearer picture of perceptions and opinions regarding the offence of child homicide and its pre- and post-offence characteristics In addition, the role of child homicide investigator is explored in greater detail, emphasising on the challenges and pressures faced throughout the investigations of child deaths

Dance can display more or less conventionalized stage forms, such as the national dances of almost every country in the world. Passed down generations, they are the heritage of nations and are subject to further transmission. This text treats Polish national dances as an element of intangible cultural heritage. It describes the formation of the canon of dances in their stage version in the interwar and post-war Poland while it aims to point out the systematisation of this field. The process was managed by artists-dancers in Poland, choreographers and dance educators, but also musicians, researchers and ethnographers. Particular attention is focused on Henryk Duda, a choreographer, who played an important role in establishing the canon of Polish national dances. However, as his work was influenced by others, especially female pedagogues and choreographers, the work also presents their profiles. The good practices of their predecessors and the personality of Henryk Duda as holders of tradition provide an example of a good model for the preservation of the heritage of national dances.

The article contains an analysis of chrononyms motivated by the names of three Christian saints (George, Demetrius, and Elijah) in the Ukrainian dialects of southern Podlasie. The mechanism of the formation of this type of chrononyms was described. Practices, beliefs and norms related to these holidays were characterized. The folk calendar is presented from the perspective of the fusion of Christian elements and pre-Christian mythological beliefs (agrarian and breeding practices, beliefs, rituals).W artykule przeanalizowano chrononimy motywowane imionami trzech świętych chrześcijańskich (Jerzego, Dymitra i Eliasza), zarejestrowane w gwarach ukraińskich południowego Podlasia. Opisano mechanizm powstawania tego typu chrononimów, scharakteryzowano praktyki, wierzenia i normy zachowań związane z wymienionymi świętami. Ludowy kalendarz ukazano z perspektywy zespolenia elementów chrześcijańskich i przedchrześcijańskich wierzeń mitologicznych (praktyki agrarno-hodowlane, wierzenia, obrzędy)

Background: General data protection regulation (GDPR) provides rules according to which datashould be managed and processed in a secure and appropriate way for patient requirements and security.Currently, everyone in Europe is covered by GDPR. Thus, the medical practice also requires accessto patient data in a safe and secure way. Methods: Holographic technology allows users to see everything visible on a computer screen in a newand less restricted way, i.e. without the limitations of traditional computers and screens. Results: In this study, a three-dimensional holographic doctors’ assistant is designed and implementedin a way that meets the GDPR requirements. The HoloView application, which is tailored to run onMicrosoft HoloLens, is proposed toallow display and access to personal data and so-called sensitiveinformation of all individual patients without the risk that it will be presented to unauthorized persons. Conclusions: To enhance the user experience and remain consistent with GSPR, a holographic deskis proposed that allows displaying patient data and sensitive information only in front of the doctor’seyes using mixed reality glasses. Last but not least, it boasts of a reduction in infection risk for the staffduring the COVID-19 pandemic, affording medical care to be carried out by as few doctors as possible

Lower-dose CT urography (CTU) with iterative reconstruction technique in children : initial experience and examination protocol

    Get PDF
Background: Conventional X-ray urography is one of the basic imaging techniques in urinary tract diseases in children. CT urography (CTU) employing standard Filtered Back Projection (FBP) reconstruction algorithms is connected with higher radiation dose. Advanced iterative reconstruction techniques enable lowering the radiation dose to the level comparable with conventional X-ray urography with better visualization of the urinary tract. Study protocol and indications for this modified technique should be discussed. Material and Methods: Introduction of iterative image reconstruction techniques allowed to significantly reduce the radiation dose delivered during examinations performed at our Department, including CT examinations of urinary tract in children. During the last two years, CT urography replaced conventional X-ray urography and became the basic imaging technique in our Department. We discuss the study protocol regarding pediatric CTU examinations. The main goal is to receive an optimal image quality at reduced radiation dose. Results: CTU examinations performed using the standard filtered back projection (FBP) reconstruction technique are associated with radiation doses about 1.5 times higher than those in conventional X-ray urography. Implementation of iterative reconstruction algorithms in advanced CT scanners allow to reduce the radiation dose to a level comparable or even lower than that in X-ray urography. In addition, urinary tract can be evaluated more precisely in multiplanar reformatted (MPR) and volume rendered (VR) images. Conclusions: 1. Advanced iterative reconstruction techniques allow to reduce radiation dose in CT examinations and to extend indications for CT urography in children. 2. Urinary tract can be evaluated more precisely in multiplanar reformatted and volume rendered images. 3. CTU may replace conventional X-ray urography in children
