    The Wageningen Delivery of Functionality symposium covered all aspects involved with food structural design to arrive at high-quality foods which meet demanding customer expectations and regulatory requirements. The symposium integrated aspects from the structural organization of foods at molecular and supramolecular scales to dedicated techniques required to describe and visualize such structures, the gastro-intestinal events and how to model these in a laboratory setting, and finally the impact those food structures and ingredients have on the consumer’s physiology and on the human perception. As an interdisciplinary platform, bringing together more than 160 researchers from academia and industry, the symposium meanwhile fulfills an important role in the food science communit

    A Randomized, Double-Blinded, Placebo-Controlled, Cross Over Study Evaluating the Efficacy and Safety of Timolol Ophthalmic Solution as an Acute Treatment of Migraine

    Introduction. Daily oral beta-adrenoreceptor antagonist has been shown to be effective in preventing migraine headaches. Timolol 0.5% ophthalmic solution is a non-selective beta-adrenoreceptor antago- nist, where the primary use is for glaucoma. There have been case reports that timolol is effective in aborting or improving an acute migraine headache. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy (decrease of ≥ 50% in pain scale at 120 minutes) of timolol 0.5% ophthalmic solution compared to placebo in acute treatment of migraine headache. Methods.We performed a randomized, double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled, study. Study entry criteria required subjects to have one to eight migraine episodes per month. The primary outcome was comparison of the change in a visual analog pain scale (VAS) at 120 minutes after taking the study medication. Study subjects were given a pain scale with a range of 1 (no pain) to 10 (most severe pain) to complete after onset of migraine but before administration of study drops and 120 minutes after administration of study drops. Improve- ment was defined as a ≥ 50% decrease in pain scale. Results. Nineteen subjects completed the study and were used for analysis. The primary outcome changes in pain scale, 120 minutes after dose, showed a similar decrease for placebo and drug with a slightly wider 95% CI for placebo. Six subjects in each arm experi- enced a ≥ 50% decrease in pain scale. Conclusion. These results support that timolol 0.5% ophthalmic solution is not an efficacious treatment for acute migraine headache

    Background:Pregnancy and childbirth are associated with lumbopelvic pain and instability. Fatigability of the lumbopelvic stabilizing muscles after childbirth is unknown, and no clinical tests exist to assess this important metric of muscle function.Objectives:To compare fatigability of the lumbopelvic stabilizing muscles in postpartum and nulligravid (control) women using the Active Straight Leg Raise (ASLR) Fatigue Task, and to determine if fatigability is associated with inter-recti distance (IRD), physical function, and pain/disability.Study design:Longitudinal case-control studyMethods:Twenty-nine nulligravid (25.4 \ub1 9.1 years) and 31 postpartum women (31.4 \ub1 5.2 years; vaginal delivery n=18) were tested at two time points, 16 weeks apart (postpartum women tested at 8\u201310 and 24\u201326 weeks postpartum). Muscular function was assessed with manual muscle testing (MMT), the ASLR Test, and a new ASLR Fatigue Task. Other measures included IRD, rectus abdominis thickness, physical activity, and six-minute walk distance.Results:Postpartum women were 23% more fatigable (p=0.028) and were weaker (MMT) (p<0.001) than controls up to 26 weeks postpartum. The ASLR fatigue task (time-to-failure) was associated with smaller IRD, greater rectus abdominis thickness, higher physical activity levels, greater MMT strength, and further distance walked in six minutes (p<0.05).Conclusion:Postpartum women (up to 6 months) had greater fatigability of the lumbopelvic stabilizing muscles and lower physical function than nulligravid women, suggesting core muscle function and fatigability should be assessed after pregnancy and childbirth.     National Rugby League athletes and tendon tap reflex assessment: A matched cohort clinical study

    BACKGROUND: Limited research suggests elite athletes may differ from non-athletes in clinical tendon tap reflex responses. METHODS: In this matched cohort study, 25 elite rugby league athletes were compared with 29 non-athletes to examine differences in tendon reflex responses. Relationships between reflex responses and lengths of players’ careers were also examined. Biceps, triceps, patellar and Achilles tendon reflexes were clinically assessed. RESULTS: Right and left reflexes were well correlated for each tendon (r(S) = 0.7–0.9). The elite rugby league athletes exhibited significantly weaker reflex responses than non-athletes in all four tendons (p < 0.005). Biceps reflexes demonstrated the largest difference and Achilles reflexes the smallest difference. Moderate negative correlations (r(S) = −0.3–0.6) were observed between reflex responses and lengths of players’ careers. CONCLUSIONS: Future research is required to further elucidate mechanisms resulting in the observed differences in tendon reflexes and to ensure clinical tendon tap examinations and findings can be interpreted appropriately in this athletic population

    Senescence is accompanied by various changes affecting the neuromuscular system that contribute to the decline in functional performances observed in elderly individuals. In addition to a profound remodelling of the neuromuscular system, several mechanisms located at both muscular and neural levels contribute to this lost of performances. Hopefully, regular physical activity may counteract or reverse some of the alterations encountered in old age. The purpose of this keynote lecture is to give an overview of the main age-related changes of the neuromuscular system and to evoke the potential influence of regular physical activity in limiting these alterations

    Manifold learning characterization of abnormal myocardial motion patterns: application to CRT-induced changes

    International audienceThe present paper aims at quantifying the evolution of a given motion pattern under cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). It builds upon techniques for population-based cardiac motion quantifica-tion (statistical atlases, for inter-sequence spatiotemporal alignment and the definition of normal/abnormal motion). Manifold learning is used on spatiotemporal maps of myocardial motion abnormalities to represent a given abnormal pattern and to compare any individual to that pattern. The methodology was applied to 2D echocardiographic sequences in a 4-chamber view from 108 subjects (21 healthy volunteers and 87 CRT candidates) at baseline, with pacing ON, and at 12 months follow-up. Experiments confirmed that recovery of a normal motion pattern is a necessary but not su cient condition for CRT response

    A multi-scale tool for functionalization of polyolefins through radical grafting

    Free radical induced grafting of polymers is an important synthesis strategy to improve the properties of the pristine polymer and to ensure compatibility in blends. In this contribution, a multi-scale modeling tool is presented that enables to describe the grafting kinetics with a detailed description at the molecular, micro- and meso-scale combined with a 1D macro-scale reactor model. The potential of the model is illustrated with polyolefins as polymer substrate, including model validation to lab-scale and industrial scale data. It is highlighted that the model is indispensable to achieve the optimal process conditions for improved process intensification and functionality/molecular control

    Stroke-related Effects on Maximal Dynamic Hip Flexor Fatigability and Functional Implications

    Introduction: Stroke-related changes in maximal dynamic hip flexor muscle fatigability may be more relevant functionally than isometric hip flexor fatigability. Methods: Ten chronic stroke survivors performed 5 sets of 30 hip flexion maximal dynamic voluntary contractions (MDVC). A maximal isometric voluntary contraction (MIVC) was performed before and after completion of the dynamic contractions. Both the paretic and nonparetic legs were tested. Results: Reduction in hip flexion MDVC torque in the paretic leg (44.7%) was larger than the nonparetic leg (31.7%). The paretic leg had a larger reduction in rectus femoris EMG (28.9%) between the first and last set of MDVCs than the nonparetic leg (7.4%). Reduction in paretic leg MDVC torque was correlated with self-selected walking speed (r2 = 0.43), while reduction in MIVC torque was not (r2 = 0.11). Conclusions: Reductions in maximal dynamic torque of paretic hip flexors may be a better predictor of walking function than reductions in maximal isometric contractions
