Big Data-backed video distribution in the telecom cloud

    Get PDF
Telecom operators are starting the deployment of Content Delivery Networks (CDN) to better control and manage video contents injected into the network. Cache nodes placed close to end users can manage contents and adapt them to users' devices, while reducing video traffic in the core. By adopting the standardized MPEG-DASH technique, video contents can be delivered over HTTP. Thus, HTTP servers can be used to serve contents, while packagers running as software can prepare live contents. This paves the way for virtualizing the CDN function. In this paper, a CDN manager is proposed to adapt the virtualized CDN function to current and future demand. A Big Data architecture, fulfilling the ETSI NFV guide lines, allows controlling virtualized components while collecting and pre-processing data. Optimization problems minimize CDN costs while ensuring the highest quality. Re-optimization is triggered based on threshold violations; data stream mining sketches transform collected into modeled data and statistical linear regression and machine learning techniques are proposed to produce estimation of future scenarios. Exhaustive simulation over a realistic scenario reveals remarkable costs reduction by dynamically reconfiguring the CDN.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Objective: To determine the degree of neuronal immaturity in the essential strabismus by Voxel analysis (particle size and FreeSurfer) of the cerebral cortex. Methods: We conducted a pilot study, prospective, transversal, and observational to analyze the density particle and cortical thickness of the brains of six children seven years of age, grouped as follows: Two healthy children as a control group (GC), two children With Congenital esotropia (ET), two children with dissociated Exotropia (XTD), and a 2-year-old child with Periventricular (LM). The results were compared for analysis. Results: The GC showed the most granulometric elements in the white substance, while the case of LM showed the least amount as well as an increase in volume of these; the cases of strabismus occupied intermediate positions between these two parameters. By FreeSurfer, an increase in the thickness of the striated cortex and a decrease in the temporal lobes were identified in the problem group. Conclusion: The neuronal immaturity is represented by the decrease of the density of the white substance, the increase in the gray substance, the decrease of the cortical thickness in the temporal lobes and the increase of cortical thickness in occipital lobes. There is a quantitative relation between the quantity, quality, proportion and distribution of the granulometric elements of the gray and white substance of the cerebral cortex that allows establishing in an objective way the neuronal immaturity by means of Voxel analysis

Psychological impact of a country-wide lockdown. Role of personal, behavioral, social, and physical conditions on negative and positive affect and meaning in life

During the early outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, a strict home lockdown was maintained in Spain for more than 50 days, disrupting social and economic activities. The aim of this study is to explore affective and well-being responses during the initial period of mandatory home lockdown. Specifically, we analyzed: 1) differences in risk perception according to sociodemographic and health profile; 2) relation between social and environmental characteristics of home isolation, positive and negative affect and meaning in life; and 3) the relationship between activities and behaviors performed by people under lockdown and well-being. A total of 1343 Spanish residents participated in this correlational and cross-sectional study. Results show a significant relationship between health and economic risk perception associated with confinement. Higher health risk perception was identified among the older population and those belonging to high-risk groups. High resilience was linked to lower negative affect and greater positive affect and meaning in life. Regarding social and environmental characteristics of home isolation, people living with others reported greater negative affect than people living alone and the daily frequency of use of open-air spaces was linked to positive affect. Higher positive affect and meaning in life were also reported in people who frequently participated in community activities or by helping others. Lower negative affect was only associated with physical exercise

Unusual presentation of hepatitis B serological markers in an Amerindian community of Venezuela with a majority of occult cases

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Occult hepatitis B infection (OBI) is characterized by the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in the absence of HBsAg in the serum of patients. The aim of this study was to characterize HBV infection among a Piaroa community, an Amerindian group which exhibits significant evidence of exposure to HBV but relatively low presence of HBsAg, and to explore the presence of OBI in this population.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 150 sera, with 17% anti-HBc and 1.3% HBsAg prevalence, 70 were tested for the presence of HBV DNA. From these, 25 (36%) were found positive for HBV DNA by PCR in the core region. Two of these 25 sera were HBsAg positive, indicating an overt infection. Of the remaining 68 sera tested, 23 exhibited OBI. Of these, 13 were HBV DNA out of 25 anti-HBc positive (52%) and 10 HBV DNA positive, out of 43 anti-HBc negative (23%), with a statistical significance of <it>p </it>= 0.03. Viral DNA and HBsAg were present intermittently in follow up sera of 13 individuals. Sequence analysis in the core region of the amplified DNA products showed that all the strains belonged to HBV genotype F3. The OBI isolates displayed 96-100% nucleotide identity between them. One isolate exhibited the co-circulation of a wild type variant with a variant with a premature stop codon at the core protein, and a variant exhibiting a deletion of 28 amino acids.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The frequency of OBI found in this Amerindian group warrants further studies in other communities exhibiting different degrees of HBV exposure.</p
