Device for aligning paper in typewriter to correct one letter or line of type is discussed. Two types of correcting devices are described and illustrations of the devices are provided

    Guide for a typewriter

    Get PDF
The invention relates to accessories for typewriters, and more particularly to an improved guide for use in aligning a sheet of paper preparatory to an application of typed indicia to selected spaces. The device includes an aligning plate pivotally mounted on a line guide having formed therein a plurality of aligned apertures. The plate is so positioned that an aperture is positioned immediately above a target area for a type slug so that a slug will imprint a character in selected spaces

Life cycle assessment of Swiss organic farming systems

    Get PDF
The impacts of organic and integrated farming systems in Switzerland on the environment have been assessed in a comprehensive study by the life cycle assessment method. This paper reports a comparison of the treatments of the DOC experiment. Organic farming showed clear ecological advantages particularly for eco- and human toxicity, resource use and biodiversity. These ecological advantages only partly apply to nutrient losses and are not always found for single products. Per kg of organic product, higher impacts were often found for global warming potential, ozone formation, eutrophication and acidification compared to integrated production. In the same crop rotation with the same amount of organic fertilisers there were no systematic differences in soil quality of organic compared with integrated production. Further improvement of the environmental performance of organic farming should focus on achieving higher yields of good quality – especially in potatoes and cereals - by using inputs more efficiently and minimising nitrogen losses

Targeted antiangiogenic agents in combination with cytotoxic chemotherapy in preclinical and clinical studies in sarcoma.

Sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of mesenchymal malignancies. In recent years, studies have demonstrated that inhibition of angiogenic pathways or disruption of established vasculature can attenuate the growth of sarcomas. However, when used as monotherapy in the clinical setting, these targeted antiangiogenic agents have only provided modest survival benefits in some sarcoma subtypes, and have not been efficacious in others. Preclinical and early clinical data suggest that the addition of conventional chemotherapy to antiangiogenic agents may lead to more effective therapies for patients with these tumors. In the current review, the authors summarize the available evidence and possible mechanisms supporting this approach

Abundance of local actions for the vacuum Einstein equations

We exhibit large classes of local actions for the vacuum Einstein equations. In presence of fermions, or more generally of matter which couple to the connection, these actions lead to inequivalent equations revealing an arbitrary number of parameters. Even in the pure gravitational sector, any corresponding quantum theory would depend on these parameters.Comment: 10 pages. Final version to appear in Letters in Mathematical Physic

Agents.jl: A performant and feature-full agent based modelling software of minimal code complexity

Agent based modelling is a simulation method in which autonomous agents interact with their environment and one another, given a predefined set of rules. It is an integral method for modelling and simulating complex systems, such as socio-economic problems. Since agent based models are not described by simple and concise mathematical equations, code that generates them is typically complicated, large, and slow. Here we present Agents.jl, a Julia-based software that provides an ABM analysis platform with minimal code complexity. We compare our software with some of the most popular ABM software in other programming languages. We find that Agents.jl is not only the most performant, but also the least complicated software, providing the same (and sometimes more) features as the competitors with less input required from the user. Agents.jl also integrates excellently with the entire Julia ecosystem, including interactive applications, differential equations, parameter optimization, and more. This removes any ``extensions library'' requirement from Agents.jl, which is paramount in many other tools

Hydrodynamic lift of vesicles under shear flow in microgravity

The dynamics of a vesicle suspension in a shear flow between parallel plates has been investigated under microgravity conditions, where vesicles are only submitted to hydrodynamic effects such as lift forces due to the presence of walls and drag forces. The temporal evolution of the spatial distribution of the vesicles has been recorded thanks to digital holographic microscopy, during parabolic flights and under normal gravity conditions. The collected data demonstrates that vesicles are pushed away from the walls with a lift velocity proportional to γ˙R3/z2\dot{\gamma} R^3/z^2 where γ˙\dot{\gamma} is the shear rate, RR the vesicle radius and zz its distance from the wall. This scaling as well as the dependence of the lift velocity upon vesicle aspect ratio are consistent with theoretical predictions by Olla [J. Phys. II France {\bf 7}, 1533--1540 (1997)].Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure

    Fuzzy Surfaces of Genus Zero

    Get PDF
A fuzzy version of the ordinary round 2-sphere has been constructed with an invariant curvature. We here consider linear connections on arbitrary fuzzy surfaces of genus zero. We shall find as before that they are more or less rigidly dependent on the differential calculus used but that a large number of the latter can be constructed which are not covariant under the action of the rotation group. For technical reasons we have been forced to limit our considerations to fuzzy surfaces which are small perturbations of the fuzzy sphere.Comment: 11 pages, Late
