On Byzantine Broadcast in Loosely Connected Networks
We consider the problem of reliably broadcasting information in a multihop
asynchronous network that is subject to Byzantine failures. Most existing
approaches give conditions for perfect reliable broadcast (all correct nodes
deliver the authentic message and nothing else), but they require a highly
connected network. An approach giving only probabilistic guarantees (correct
nodes deliver the authentic message with high probability) was recently
proposed for loosely connected networks, such as grids and tori. Yet, the
proposed solution requires a specific initialization (that includes global
knowledge) of each node, which may be difficult or impossible to guarantee in
self-organizing networks - for instance, a wireless sensor network, especially
if they are prone to Byzantine failures. In this paper, we propose a new
protocol offering guarantees for loosely connected networks that does not
require such global knowledge dependent initialization. In more details, we
give a methodology to determine whether a set of nodes will always deliver the
authentic message, in any execution. Then, we give conditions for perfect
reliable broadcast in a torus network. Finally, we provide experimental
evaluation for our solution, and determine the number of randomly distributed
Byzantine failures than can be tolerated, for a given correct broadcast

On the Informational Comparison of Qualitative Fuzzy Measures
International audienceFuzzy measures or capacities are the most general representation of uncertainty functions. However, this general class has been little explored from the point of view of its information content, when degrees of uncertainty are not supposed to be numerical, and belong to a finite qualitative scale, except in the case of possibility or necessity measures. The thrust of the paper is to define an ordering relation on the set of qualitative capacities expressing the idea that one is more informative than another, in agreement with the possibilistic notion of relative specificity. To this aim, we show that the class of qualitative capacities can be partitioned into equivalence classes of functions containing the same amount of information. They only differ by the underlying epistemic attitude such as pessimism or optimism. A meaningful information ordering between capacities can be defined on the basis of the most pessimistic (resp. optimistic) representatives of their equivalence classes. It is shown that, while qualitative capacities bear strong similarities to belief functions, such an analogy can be misleading when it comes to information content
Local methylthiolate adsorption geometry on Au(111) from photoemission core-level shifts
The local adsorption structure of methylthiolate in the ordered Au(111)-(√3×√3)R30° phase has been investigated using core-level-shift measurements of the surface and bulk components of the Au 4f7/2 photoelectron binding energy. The amplitude ratio of the core-level-shift components associated with surface Au atoms that are, and are not, bonded to the thiolate is found to be compatible only with the previously proposed Au-adatom-monothiolate moiety in which the thiolate is bonded atop Au adatoms in hollow sites, and not on an unreconstructed surface, or in Au-adatom-dithiolate species
Anytime Algorithms for Solving Possibilistic MDPs and Hybrid MDPs
The ability of an agent to make quick, rational decisions in an uncertain environment is paramount for its applicability in realistic settings. Markov Decision Processes (MDP) provide such a framework, but can only model uncertainty that can be expressed as probabilities. Possibilistic counterparts of MDPs allow to model imprecise beliefs, yet they cannot accurately represent probabilistic sources of uncertainty and they lack the efficient online solvers found in the probabilistic MDP community. In this paper we advance the state of the art in three important ways. Firstly, we propose the first online planner for possibilistic MDP by adapting the Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) algorithm. A key component is the development of efficient search structures to sample possibility distributions based on the DPY transformation as introduced by Dubois, Prade, and Yager. Secondly, we introduce a hybrid MDP model that allows us to express both possibilistic and probabilistic uncertainty, where the hybrid model is a proper extension of both probabilistic and possibilistic MDPs. Algebraic characterization of the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions in gauge theories
A new way of solving the descent equations corresponding to the Wess-Zumino
consistency conditions is presented. The method relies on the introduction of
an operator which allows to decompose the exterior space-time
derivative as a commutator. The case of the Yang-Mills theories is

Physical Study by Surface Characterizations of Sarin Sensor on the Basis of Chemically Functionalized Silicon Nanoribbon Field Effect Transistor
Surface characterizations of an organophosphorus (OP) gas detector based on
chemically functionalized silicon nanoribbon field-effect transistor (SiNR-FET)
were performed by Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) and ToF-SIMS, and
correlated with changes in the current-voltage characteristics of the devices.
KPFM measurements on FETs allow (i) to investigate the contact potential
difference (CPD) distribution of the polarized device as function of the gate
voltage and the exposure to OP traces and, (ii) to analyze the CPD hysteresis
associated to the presence of mobile ions on the surface. The CPD measured by
KPFM on the silicon nanoribbon was corrected due to side capacitance effects in
order to determine the real quantitative surface potential. Comparison with
macroscopic Kelvin probe (KP) experiments on larger surfaces was carried out.
These two approaches were quantitatively consistent. An important increase of
the CPD values (between + 399 mV and + 302 mV) was observed after the OP sensor
grafting, corresponding to a decrease of the work function, and a weaker
variation after exposure to OP (between - 14 mV and - 61 mV) was measured.
Molecular imaging by ToF-SIMS revealed OP presence after SiNR-FET exposure. The
OP molecules were essentially localized on the Si-NR confirming effectiveness
and selectivity of the OP sensor. A prototype was exposed to Sarin vapors and

Professional decision-making in medicine: Development of a new measure and preliminary evidence of validity
INTRODUCTION: This study developed a new Professional Decision-Making in Medicine Measure that assesses the use of effective decision-making strategies: seek help, manage emotions, recognize consequences and rules, and test assumptions and motives. The aim was to develop a content valid measure and obtain initial evidence for construct validity so that the measure could be used in future research or educational assessment.
METHODS: Clinical scenario-based items were developed based on a review of the literature and interviews with physicians. For each item, respondents are tasked with selecting two responses (out of six plausible options) that they would choose in that situation. Three of the six options reflect a decision-making strategy; these responses are scored as correct. Data were collected from a sample of 318 fourth-year medical students in the United States. They completed a 16-item version of the measure (Form A) and measures of social desirability, moral disengagement, and professionalism attitudes. Professionalism ratings from clerkships were also obtained. A sub-group (n = 63) completed a second 16-item measure (Form B) to pilot test the instrument, as two test forms are useful for pre-posttest designs.
RESULTS: Scores on the new measure indicated that, on average, participants answered 75% of items correctly. Evidence for construct validity included the lack of correlation between scores on the measure and socially desirable responding, negative correlation with moral disengagement, and modest to low correlations with professionalism attitudes. A positive correlation was observed with a clerkship rating focused on professionalism in peer interactions.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate modest proficiency in the use of decision-making strategies among fourth-year medical students. Additional research using the Professional Decision-Making Measure should explore scores among physicians in various career stages, and the causes and correlates of scores. Educators could utilize the measure to assess courses that teach decision-making strategies
Einfluss ökologischer Bewirtschaftung und verschiedener Kulturen auf die Regenwurmfauna
Problemstellung/Ziele:Vorkommen und Artenzusammensetzung der Regenwurmpopulation haben eine grosse Bedeutung im nachhaltigen Ackerbau. Als Architekten und Bauarbeiter des Bodens beeinflussen die Regenwürmer verschiedene Parameter der Bodenfruchtbarkeit und damit das Wachstums der Kulturpflanzen. Der Landwirt beeinflusst das Regenwurmvorkommen bei vorgegebenem Standort und Fruchtfolge vor allem durch Bewirtschaftungsmassnahmen wie Düngung, Pflanzenschutz und Bodenbearbeitung. Um Richtung und Ausmass dieser Einflüsse zu erkennen untersuchten wir von 1997 bis 2001 die Regenwurmpopulationen im ökologischen und den integrierten Anbausystemen des Vergleichsversuches Burgrain (D. Dubois, 1999).
Fazit: Ökologische Bewirtschaftung förderte auf Burgrain spezifisch das Vorkommen von anözischen Lumbricus und endogäischen Arten; hingegen nicht das Vorkommen von anözischen Nicodrilus Arten. Letztere wurden hingegen sehr deutlich durch die kulturbedingten Bewirtschaftungsmassnahmen beeinflusst. Besonders das Pflügen im Oktober vor Winterweizen wirkte sich negativ auf die tiefgrabenden anözischen Nicodrilus Arten aus. Hier gilt es Verbesserungsmöglichkeiten zu prüfen
A formal concept view of argumentation
International audienceThe paper presents a parallel between two important theories for the treatment of information which address questions that are apparently unrelated and that are studied by different research communities: an enriched view of formal concept analysis and abstract argumentation. Both theories exploit a binary relation (expressing object-property links, attacks between arguments). We show that when an argumentation framework rather considers the complementary relation does not attack, then its stable extensions can be seen as the exact counterparts of formal concepts. This leads to a cube of oppositions, a generalization of the well-known square of oppositions, between eight remarkable sets of arguments. This provides a richer view for argumentation in cases of bi-valued attack relations and fuzzy ones
Evolution of topological order in Xe films on a quasicrystal surface
We report results of the first computer simulation studies of a physically
adsorbed gas on a quasicrystalline surface, Xe on decagonal Al-Ni-Co. The grand
canonical Monte Carlo method is employed, using a semi-empirical gas-surface
interaction, based on conventional combining rules, and the usual Lennard-Jones
Xe-Xe interaction. The resulting adsorption isotherms and calculated structures
are consistent with the results of LEED experimental data. The evolution of the
bulk film begins in the second layer, while the low coverage behavior is
epitaxial. This transition from 5-fold to 6-fold ordering is temperature
dependent, occurring earlier (at lower coverage) for the higher temperatures
