    Influence of orthodontic caregiver behaviour on the perceived satisfaction of patients during orthodontic treatment.

In this thesis I interviewed patients that are busy with orthodontic treatment, as well as those that have undergone orthodontic treatment at the department of Orthodontics at the University of the Western Cape, with the aid of four questionnaires. Patients completed questionnaires to provide general and demographic information, quantify their satisfaction with the orthodontic treatment process, their perception of the orthodontic clinician's behavioural traits and lastly they completed the NEO-FFI personality questionnaire to determine their own personality profile. All these questionnaires were used in previous studies, or they were slightly modified to be applicable to orthodontics. The information gained was used to determine if there are correlations between the patient’s perceived satisfaction of the treatment process with patient specific treatment variables (as acquired from the General information and Demographics Questionnaire ), demographic factors, clinician's behavioural traits and patient specific personality traits and any combination of the above mentioned. We wanted to determine which behavioural traits of the orthodontic caregiver influences the perceived satisfaction with the treatment to the greatest extent. Furthermore, we wanted to determine if certain personality traits of the patients would influence their perceived satisfaction with the treatment process or their perception of the clinician's behavioural traits. The only aspect from the General Information and Demographics Questionnaire that had any correlation to satisfaction with the treatment process or the perception of the clinician's behavioural traits, was whether the patient was treated by a single registrar or multiple registrars. Patients treated by multiple clinicians had a lower average score for satisfaction and orthodontist behaviour. Results from the study shows that all the clinician's behavioural traits do have statistically significant influence on the perceived satisfaction with the treatment process, but certain behavioural traits have a greater influence. Result showed Empathy and Care to have the strongest influence on perceived satisfaction, whereas Motivation has the lowest influence. The NEO-FFI personality questionnaire was used to register each patient's personality profile. Scoring for the following personality traits created the personality profile: Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness and Agreeableness. Patient personality profiles were shown to have no significant influence on the patient's perceived satisfaction with the treatment process.Neuroticism was shown to have a weak negative correlation with the Professionalism sub-category of the Orthodontic Clinician Behaviour Questionnaire. Conscientiousness has been shown to have a weak positive correlation with all categories of the Orthodontic Clinician Behaviour Questionnaire It is put forth by the researcher that more time and effort has to be put into improving all aspects of the clinician's behaviour, as it will positively influence the perceived satisfaction of the orthodontic treatment process.Even though there are no significant correlations, patients needs to be screened to determine their personality profiles, as this may lead to slight improved scoring on certain behavioural aspects which may in turn lead to greater patient satisfaction. It may be especially worthwhile to recognise the neurotic patient and treat them on a more personal level, as this may improve their overall satisfaction

    Doctor Scientiae - DScDetermining arch perimeter is of importance in both a clinical setting, where it is used to determine space requirements, as well as in an epidemiological setting where it is used to describe large populations. Physical measurement of arch perimeter is time consuming and may be prone to operator errors when done on study casts and even more so in a clinical situation. The use of a simple mathematical model to predict arch perimeter, using a few measurements that can be done easily and reliably, would be of great use to the practitioner

    Cardinal temperature differences, determined in vitro, between closely related species and subspecies of pectinolytic bacteria responsible for blackleg and soft rot on potatoes

    Potato blackleg and soft rot cause major losses and are caused by two bacterial genera, Pectobacterium and Dickeya. Species affecting potatoes are Pectobacterium atrosepticum (Pba), Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc), Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. brasiliense (Pcb), Pectobacterium wasabiae (Pwa), Dickeya dadantii (Dda) and Dickeya solani (Dso). Pathogenicity of these species is dependent on temperature, with each species having its own optimal temperature and temperature range for growth, leading to varying degrees of losses. Pectobacterium atrosepticum, a temperature sensitive species, mainly occurs in temperate climates, Pcc in temperate to tropical, and Dickeya spp. in subtropical environments. The aim of this study was to determine the cardinal growth temperatures for the species responsible for blackleg and soft rot in vitro. Bacterial isolates were incubated in a temperature gradient shaking incubator at 30 different temperatures ranging from ±5 °C to ±56 °C, and growth measured at two set time intervals. Results were statistically analysed using the Gaussian function. The optimal temperature of 31 °C and temperature range of 20 °C to 38 °C for Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. brasiliense, was similar to those recorded for Pcc. Pectobacterium wasabiae grew at an optimal temperature of 29 °C and range of 20 °C to 34 °C. Higher optimal temperatures of 32 °Cand 34 °C,with ranges of 21 °C to 38 °Cand 23 °C to 41 °C were recorded for Dda and Dso, respectively. The minimal variation in optimal temperatures between different species might be an indication that temperature ranges, rather than optimal temperature, play an important role in disease development.     Utilising a cultural–historical analysis to map the historicity of Social Studies, Natural Science and Technology education in the early years

    Background: South Africa needs citizens who are morally sound, adaptive to change, technologically innovative and literate in socio-scientific issues. The young child is apparently being prepared for active citizenry through basic “Social Science, Natural Sciences and Technology” education as encapsulated in the South African curriculum. Aim: We foreground a theoretical and analytical framework to map the cultural–historical trajectory of South Africa’s Beginning Knowledge curriculum. Setting: Cultivating citizenship requires that these science subject domains be incorporated in a coherent, well-conceptualised and relevant early childhood curriculum as suggested by international literature. Educators need to be specialists in socio-scientific issues in both the content and pedagogy of these sciences in order to expound the curriculum. Methods: Our newly coined hybridised theoretical framework - the ‘Hybrid CHAT’ - together with an aligned analytical framework enabled us to illuminate the historical subject-didactical genetic development of Beginning Knowledge. An extensive sample of typographical textbooks, artefacts and cultural tools were analysed and interpreted. Results: Beginning Knowledge is afforded limited teaching time. The knowledge, skills and values associated with these science subjects serve to support and strengthen the acquisition of language and mathematics competencies. Currently, Beginning Knowledge does not sufficiently prepare child citizens for the global demands of the 21st century. Conclusion: Hybrid CHAT could invite further studies to place Beginning Knowledge on par with international curricula. This would also align the curriculum with the aspirations for an ideal South African citizenry as well as prepare child citizens to pursue Science and Technology for social development
