    Stem cell therapy is a promising treatment modality for necrotizing enterocolitis. Among the many promising stem cells identified to date, it is likely that mesenchymal stem cells will be the most useful and practical cell-based therapies for this condition. Using acellular components such as exosomes or other paracrine mediators are promising as well. Multiple mechanisms are likely at play in the positive effects provided by these cells, and further research is underway to further elucidate these effects

    New genetic loci implicated in fasting glucose homeostasis and their impact on type 2 diabetes risk.

    Levels of circulating glucose are tightly regulated. To identify new loci influencing glycemic traits, we performed meta-analyses of 21 genome-wide association studies informative for fasting glucose, fasting insulin and indices of beta-cell function (HOMA-B) and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in up to 46,186 nondiabetic participants. Follow-up of 25 loci in up to 76,558 additional subjects identified 16 loci associated with fasting glucose and HOMA-B and two loci associated with fasting insulin and HOMA-IR. These include nine loci newly associated with fasting glucose (in or near ADCY5, MADD, ADRA2A, CRY2, FADS1, GLIS3, SLC2A2, PROX1 and C2CD4B) and one influencing fasting insulin and HOMA-IR (near IGF1). We also demonstrated association of ADCY5, PROX1, GCK, GCKR and DGKB-TMEM195 with type 2 diabetes. Within these loci, likely biological candidate genes influence signal transduction, cell proliferation, development, glucose-sensing and circadian regulation. Our results demonstrate that genetic studies of glycemic traits can identify type 2 diabetes risk loci, as well as loci containing gene variants that are associated with a modest elevation in glucose levels but are not associated with overt diabetes

    Entrepreneurship and Institutions

    In this paper entrepreneurs are defined as agents who bring about economic change by combining their own effort with other factors of production in search of economic rents. The institutional setup is argued to determine both the supply and direction of entrepreneurial activity. Four key institutions are explored more closely: property rights protection, savings policies, taxation and the regulation of labor markets. Institutions have far-reaching effects on entrepreneurship, and they largely determine whether or not entrepreneurial activity will be socially productive. Due to the responsiveness of entrepreneurship to the institutional setup it is maintained that in-depth analyses of specific institutions are required in order to further our understanding of the determinants of entrepreneurial behavior and the economic effects of entrepreneurship. The paper also demonstrates that it is problematic to use self-employment as an empirical proxy for productive entrepreneurship

    Response of Aquatic Bacterial Communities to Hydraulic Fracturing in Northwestern Pennsylvania: A Five-Year Study.

    Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing extraction procedures have become increasingly present in Pennsylvania where the Marcellus Shale play is largely located. The potential for long-term environmental impacts to nearby headwater stream ecosystems and aquatic bacterial assemblages is still incompletely understood. Here, we perform high-throughput sequencing of the 16 S rRNA gene to characterize the bacterial community structure of water, sediment, and other environmental samples (n = 189) from 31 headwater stream sites exhibiting different histories of fracking activity in northwestern Pennsylvania over five years (2012-2016). Stream pH was identified as a main driver of bacterial changes within the streams and fracking activity acted as an environmental selector for certain members at lower taxonomic levels within stream sediment. Methanotrophic and methanogenic bacteria (i.e. Methylocystaceae, Beijerinckiaceae, and Methanobacterium) were significantly enriched in sites exhibiting Marcellus shale activity (MSA+) compared to MSA- streams. This study highlighted potential sentinel taxa associated with nascent Marcellus shale activity and some of these taxa remained as stable biomarkers across this five-year study. Identifying the presence and functionality of specific microbial consortia within fracking-impacted streams will provide a clearer understanding of the natural microbial community's response to fracking and inform in situ remediation strategies

    GATEWAY MEDIATED INTERSYSTEM CROSSING IN C2H2C_{2}H_{2}

    Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Department of Chemistry, University of California at Santa BarbaraLaser Excited Metastable (LEM) Spectra of C2H2C_{2}H_{2} indicate that a single vibrational level of the T3T_{3} surface couples the 3ν33\nu_{3} level of the S1S_{1} surface to a dense manifold of T1T_{1} and T2T_{2} states. In the proposed coupling mechanism, Gateway Mediated Intersystem Crossing (GMISC), the spin-orbit matrix element between the 3ν3  S13\nu_{3}\;S_{1} state and one near-degenerate vibrational level of the T3T_{3} state is much larger than the direct interaction between 3ν3  S13\nu_{3}\;S_{1} and any other T1T_{1} or T2T_{2} level. This is due to a near degeneracy between the S1S_{1} and T3T_{3} vibrational states and a nearby S1T3S_{1}-T_{3} surface crossing. The S1S_{1} state interacts with the background triplet states indirectly through T3T_{3} via T3T2,1T_{3} \sim T_{2,1} matrix elements. Evidence for this mechanism includes a shift between the LIF and LEM spectra, an interference effect near J=5J = 5 in LEM spectrum, and the strength of the LEM signal for the 3ν33\nu_{3} band relative to other bands in the AˉXˉ\bar{A}-\bar{X} band system. Other experiments in which S1(T3,2,1,S0)S_{1} \sim (T_{3,2,1,} S_{0}) interactions were observed will be discussed in the context of the GMISC model
