Experiences of fiction engagement in people with mental health problems

Section A Section A is a critical appraisal and metasynthesis of nine qualitative studies exploring experiences of fiction engagement in adults living with mental health problems. Following quality appraisal, thematic synthesis identified three analytic themes - Seen and Connected, Escaping Distress and Growth and Exploration. Themes are explored in relation to related theory and existing literature. Limitations are considered, alongside clinical and research implications. The importance of further consideration of the role of representation of mental health problems within fiction, alongside exploration into how fiction engagement affects other age-groups is outlined. Section B Section B is an empirical paper developing a modified grounded theory of how young people with mental health problems experience and are affected by representative fiction. Following public advertisements, 14 individual interviews were conducted with nine young people on their experiences. The developed theoretical model suggests that representative fiction was experienced as a reflection on their reality, a process made up of two stages, identification with fiction and transferring beyond fiction. The effects of this process depend on personal context and the nature of fiction. Findings are discussed in relation to relevant theory and wellbeing outcomes, with study limitations and its implications considered

Means for accommodating large overstrain in lead wires

An electrical wire is reported along whose length loops are formed at intervals and retained in a plastic capsule that allows unfolding of the loop when tension is exerted on the opposite ends of the wire. The capsule is formed by encompassing each loop with a sleeve of heat shrinkable synthetic plastic material which overlaps the loop and heat shrinking the overlapping portions. Thus, a length of electrical wire is formed which stores extra lengths of wire in the quantity needed to match the expected stretching of materials or elements such as ropes, cords and the like of high elongation to which the electrical wire may be attached

Microaggressions and Psychological Functioning among High Achieving African-Americans: A Mixed-Methods Approach

    Get PDF
Racial microaggressions and their influence on mental health were examined among African American doctoral students and graduates of doctoral programs. Using a mixed-methods approach, the current study first identified the types of microaggressions reported by African American participants (N = 97) and then investigated the mechanism by which these experiences influence mental health over time with a separate sample of African Americans (N = 107). The qualitative findings revealed three categories of microaggressions including Assumption of Criminality/Second-Class Citizen, Underestimation of Personal Ability, and Cultural/racial Isolation. The quantitative analyses found support for a moderated-mediational model by which Underestimation of Personal Ability was associated with greater perceived stress at one-year follow-up, which in turn was related to greater depressive symptoms. Active coping was found to moderate the racial microaggression-perceived stress link such that individuals who endorse active coping behaviors reported lower perceived stress. These findings are discussed in terms of practical and theoretical implications regarding the role of racial micro-aggressions in the lives of high-achieving African Americans and the mechanisms by which these experiences contribute to mental health problems

Millennial Men: A Correlational Study between Masculinity, Emotional Expression, and Mental Health

This study aimed to explore the question: do American, millennial men that try to achieve masculine ideals have less ability to express themselves emotionally and do they have less positive mental health and well-being? The population sample gathered consisted of 44 American, male participants between the ages of 35 and 21. The data was measured via a survey that consisted of two questionnaires, the Gender Role Conflict Scale and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale as well as several demographic questions consisting of a total of 55 questions for the survey. The survey was administered online via Qualtrics Survey Software. The design of the study was a quantitative, correlational design. The results did not find a significant, positive relationship between gender role conflict and mental health and well-being or between emotional expression and mental health and well-being. Participants in this study had an average of moderate levels of gender role conflict (not severe levels of gender role conflict) and average mental well-being scores suggesting that men may be experiencing less gender role conflict pressures than men from previous studies. Gaining understanding and perspective on how this could affect men may be beneficial towards understanding what new generations of men are struggling with and how they may differ from previous generations
