This Noyce Scholarship Project has two purposes: Mathematically the purpose of this exercise is to show that graphs are not a perfect representation of a concept; there are flaws and assumptions made. Students will be engaged in higher order thinking as they work through word problems for this demonstration. Scientifically, the concept of erosion/deposition along a meandering stream and the water’s differential velocity can come into play in several areas of life. Recreationally; this would be important for rafting, canoeing, kayaking, fishing etc. When looking for a place to buy or build a house, erosional and depositional features of a stream would be important to understand when trying to make an educational decision on where to live. Career choice as a challenge for education. What school graduates think of career orientation programs

Maßnahmen zur Berufsorientierung gehören heutzutage in der Sekundarstufe schon zum Standardprogramm vieler Schulen, jedoch mit Ausnahme des Gymnasiums. Dort stehen Schüler wie Lehrer Unterrichtseinheiten zur Studien- und Berufsorientierung reservierter gegenüber. Die Frage der Akzeptanz solcher Maßnahmen wird aber angesichts der Fülle entsprechender Programme und ihrer Bedeutsamkeit für den Bildungsweg junger Menschen immer drängender. Mit Hilfe einer Befragung von Abiturienten wurde die Einschätzung von Maßnahmen, die typischerweise von Schulen angeboten werden, untersucht. Wurden die Maßnahmen in der Schule durchgeführt, bewerteten die Schüler sie deutlich schlechter als wenn sie in der Freizeit durchgeführt wurden. Nur für die in der Freizeit oder privat durchgeführten Maßnahmen zur Berufsorientierung zeigten sich Zusammenhänge zum subjektiven Entwicklungsstand der Berufswahl. In this type of school students as well as teachers have reservations against lessons regarding vocational orientation. The question of acceptance of such means however becomes the more urgent, the more such programs are offered and the more relevance regarding career development is attributed to them. This study investigated the evaluations of school graduates given to career orienting activities typically offered by school. When pursued at school, participants evaluate these activities as substantially less positive than when pursued in leisure time. Online motion correction for diffusion-weighted segmented-EPI and FLASH imaging

This paper explores the application of online motion correction using navigator echoes to the segmented-EPI and FLASH techniques. In segmented EPI this has the advantage over post-acquisition correction that the position in k-space of each segment is no longer subject to arbitrary shifts caused by rotation. In diffusion-weighted FLASH it has the advantage that the full magnetisation can be utilised in comparison to other methods of eliminating the sensitivity to bulk motion, in which the sensitivity is halved. Healthy subjects were investigated on a 3 T whole-body system in which the hardware has been modified so that navigator echoes can be recorded on a personal computer which generates the necessary magnetic field gradient correction pulses and shifts in the Larmor frequency within 800 μs. ECG triggering was used to avoid the period of non-rigid-body brain motion. Two orthogonal navigator echoes were employed. For segmented EPI it was found essential to minimise the T2* weighting of the navigator echoes to about 10 ms to obtain reliable results. High quality images were obtained for both methods examined. Mathematics Interventions: A Correlational Study of the Relationship between Level of Implementation of the Accelerated Math Program and Student Achievement

Current legislation, such as No Child Left Behind (2001) or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004), has increased accountability for schools for the education of all students. These laws require schools to provide interventions for struggling learners, as part of the Response to Intervention process (IDEA, 2004). Accelerated Math (AM), published by Renaissance Learning, is a scientifically based program designed to supplement quality instruction as part of the RtI process. This correlational study examined ex post facto data using pre and posttest scores on the STAR Math Test in relation to amount of classroom time dedicated to AM instruction This computer-based program was examined as part of the existing school day, in public school systems in the rural Arkansas area. The results of the study showed a strong correlation between the amount of time and student performance and a decrease in the achievement gap when AM is implemented. Some concerns were noted about lower student gains in older grades and lack of participation in younger grades. Several reasons were explored for this issue, including teacher evaluation, math anxiety, and stereotypes. Findings from the study may help streamline instructional strategies and processes, and improve teacher effectiveness and evaluation procedures for mathematics instruction of all students

Bildung über Berufe mit Serious Games? Potenziale zur Förderung gendersensibler Berufsorientierung aus der Perspektive angehender Lehrpersonen

Die Frage nach den Potenzialen von Game-basiertem Lernen zur Förderung geschlechtsunabhängiger Berufswahl erfordert eine Auseinandersetzung mit Konzepten des Lernens mit digitalen Medien, gendersensibler Bildung und Berufsorientierung zugleich. Neben einer konzeptionellen Klärung wird die Bereitschaft von Lehrpersonen zum Einsatz Game-basierten Lernens im Unterricht bedeutsam. Mit einer quantitativen Studie wurden Faktoren untersucht, die die Bereitschaft zum Einsatz eines Serious Game bei künftigen Lehrpersonen determinieren. Deutlich wurde, dass Vorwissen zur Berufsorientierung und Geschlechtsrolleneinstellungen nicht ausschlaggebend sind, während Einstellungen zum Einsatz digitaler Medien im Unterricht eine entscheidende Rolle für die Bereitschaft zum Einsatz des Serious Game like2be zu spielen vermögen. Zudem wurden stereotype Muster in der Zuschreibung geschlechtsbezogener Eignung für Berufe sichtbar. Die Befunde weisen auf zentrale Aspekte hin, die es bei der Qualifizierung von Lehrpersonen zu berücksichtigen gilt

Concepts and quality features of career guidance at comprehensive schools

Der Übergang von der Schule in den Beruf ist eine zentrale Entwicklungsaufgabe im Jugendalter, die in der Schule durch gezielte pädagogische Angebote zur beruflichen Orientierung unterstützt werden soll. Die Konzeption pädagogischer Begleitung erfolgt bisher nicht entlang eines theoretisch fundierten Modells und entsprechender didaktischer Überlegungen, sondern vor allem vor dem Hintergrund bewährter pädagogischer Praxis. Dabei wird der unterschiedliche Entwicklungsstand von Schülerinnen und Schülern gleichen Alters häufig außer Acht gelassen. Eine zielgerichtete, individualisierte Förderung beruflicher Entwicklungsprozesse und deren Begleitung erfordern jedoch Instrumente, mit denen sich Aussagen zum berufsbezogenen Entwicklungsstand des Einzelnen treffen lassen. Zudem ist Berufsorientierung nicht nur auf inhaltlicher Ebene zu betrachten, sondern ist einzubetten in die Prozesse der Schulentwicklung. Die Verzahnung von Berufsorientierung und Schulentwicklung ist das bestimmende Prinzip des Thüringer Berufsorientierungsmodells (ThüBOM). Es werden Instrumente zur Qualitätsentwicklung und -sicherung sowohl auf der Schülerebene als auch auf der Organisationsebene entwickelt. Der aktuelle Diskurs zur Berufsorientierung rückt vor allem die Notwendigkeit einer Individualisierung unterstützender Angebote in den Mittelpunkt. Hieraus leitet sich ein Forschungs- und Entwicklungsbedarf ab, der (1) die Notwendigkeit der empirischen Überprüfung der Wirksamkeit berufsorientierender Maßnahmen, (2) die Entwicklung von Instrumenten und Verfahren zur Diagnostik und Förderung der Berufswahlkompetenz im Kontext schulischer Entwicklung und (3) die weitere theoretische Fundierung der Berufsorientierung betrifft. Viewing vocational development as an individual process, vocational guidance should accommodate special needs of students, which differ even in comparison with classmates of the same age. Schools are asked to support pupils in their vocational development with interventions fitting the individual needs of girls and boys. Due to the lack of both, theoretical foundation and empirical evidence, we do not know enough about the critical ingredients of effective vocational interventions in schools. Despite that, individual guidance of vocational development can be seen as a major resource of support for young and inexperienced learners. Basically, a theoretical model is needed that emphasizes individual vocational development and describes phases as well as phase-adequate behavior of adolescents. This would allow the arrangement of vocational interventions based on the identification of individual needs. The development of the Thüringer Berufsorientierungsmodell (ThüBOM) facilitates the integration of individual perspectives and organizational contexts of vocational guidance in schools by postulating a complex model of vocational development and learning. Future research should address (1) the empirical test of the efficacy of vocational guidance activities, (2) the development of diagnostic measures and effective school-based trainings of career adaptability, and (3) the further theoretical foundation of vocational promotion in schools. Vom Berufswahlpass zur berufswahlapp

Der Berufswahlpass besteht bereits seit ca. zwei Jahrzehnten und hat als papierbasiertes Portfolio-Instrument in der Vergangenheit seinen Weg in viele Curricula der Bundesländer gefunden. In der Schulpraxis wird der Berufswahlpass seither im berufsorientierenden Unterricht und darüber hinaus eingesetzt. Im Zuge der zunehmenden Digitalisierung – insbesondere auch der Lebenswelten von Schüler*innen – stellte sich jedoch in der Vergangenheit immer wieder die Frage, wie das traditionelle Verständnis des Berufswahlpass-Ordners als analoges Portfolio modernisiert werden kann und zukünftig insbesondere die Potenziale digitaler Medien für das Lehren und Lernen in der Beruflichen Orientierung nutzbar gemacht werden können. Diese Vision liegt dem Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekt „Berufswahlpass 4.0“ zugrunde, dessen Ziel es ist, ein innovatives, gebrauchswertorientiertes, nachhaltig einsetzbares, wirksames und erprobtes E-Portfolio-Konzept zu gestalten, das in der didaktischen Dimension eine Weiterentwicklung des Berufswahlpasses darstellt und in der technischen Dimension die Potenziale digitaler Medien konsequent und didaktisch begründet berücksichtigt. Damit soll ein Beitrag zur Förderung von Berufswahlkompetenz, zum Einsatz digitaler Medien in der Schule sowie zur E-Portfolio-Arbeit als Mittel zum selbstorganisierten und eigenverantwortlichen Lernen geleistet werden. Im Projekt entsteht als Kernprodukt die so genannte „berufswahlapp“, die perspektivisch als digitales Pendant zum Berufswahlpass-Ordner in der Schulpraxis zum Einsatz kommen wird.7
