Understanding Philanthropy and Inequality in the United States through Probabilistic Regressions

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to analyze and understand the dynamics between charitable donations and income inequality in the United States. Through the theoretical lens of financialization and income inequality, we analyze data from the Panel Survey of Income Dynamics. We utilize probabilistic regression models to find and compare the impact of demographics on the likelihood of an American household donating to charity. Our results show that age, sex, and income have positive impacts on donation likelihoods, while non-white racial groups can be seen having a lower probability of donation. Analyzing household data from lower-income groups allows for a recognizing of the impacts that income inequality has on philanthropy from a donor side population that has scarcely been looked at before

Libros electrónicos en la Red de Bibliotecas del CSIC. Creación de una colección común

[EN] The collection of digital resources of the CSIC Library Network has been developed mainly for electronic journals. However in the last three years its model for acquisition, management and accessibility applied to journals has been tried to ebooks. The first phase of the introduction of electronic books in the CSIC did not follow a defined strategy. Since 2007 a plan of cooperation has been established within the network in order to create a common collection of quality electronic books. In this article we describe the experience of cooperative purchasing among libraries in the network, the selected collections, how to make them accessible to library patrons, their usage up to now, the investments made and future plans to consolidate the CSIC ebooks collection.[ES] La colección de recursos digitales de la Red de Bibliotecas del CSIC ha estado formada fundamentalmente por revistas electrónicas. Got Milk?

This multidisciplinary study examines the liquid dairy and alternative milk markets through four different lenses, exploring the intersection of consumer sentiment, industry financial performance, nutritional science, and environmental implication using metrics compiled from industry financial and market research, consumer sentiment surveys, and empirical scientific research. Through our analysis we realized that our results were rife with contradictions. Consumers often pick non-dairy alternatives for health or environmental reasons, but this choice is often rooted in misinformation. Additionally, it is broadly perceived that alternative milks are the largest challenger to the dairy milk industry. However, the industry has been challenged since before alternative milks gained significant share

On the Evolved Nature of CK Vul

Original paper can be found at: http://www.astrosociety.org/pubs/cs/381.html Copyright ASPCK Vul was classified as the oldest observed nova. Recent studies have proven however, that CK Vul cannot be unambiguously classified as any known kind of eruptive variable. We present the optical and radio observations of the remnants of the eruption of CK Vul in the year 1670 in order to discuss possible scenarios for this object. We have measured the proper motion which proves that the nebula is attributed to the star observed during its 1670−1672 brightening. A large bipolar nebula of 70 arcsec is discovered in a deep Hα image. Radio observations reveal a barely resolved source placed in the expansion center of the ejecta

Laser actuation of cantilevers for picometre amplitude dynamic force microscopy

As nanoscale and molecular devices become reality, the ability to probe materials on these scales is increasing in importance. To address this, we have developed a dynamic force microscopy technique where the flexure of the microcantilever is excited using an intensity modulated laser beam to achieve modulation on the picoscale. The flexure arises from thermally induced bending through differential expansion and the conservation of momentum when the photons are reflected and absorbed by the cantilever. In this study, we investigated the photothermal and photon pressure responses of monolithic and layered cantilevers using a modulated laser in air and immersed in water. The developed photon actuation technique is applied to the stretching of single polymer chains

Assessing distributed leadership for learning and teaching quality: a multi-institutional study

Distributed leadership has been explored internationally as a leadership model that will promote and advance excellence in learning and teaching in higher education. This paper presents an assessment of how effectively distributed leadership was enabled at five Australian institutions implementing a collaborative teaching quality development scheme called the Peer Assisted Teaching Scheme. The Scheme brings together expertise from teams of academics, coordinators, and institutional learning and teaching portfolio holders to the shared goal of enhancing learning and teaching quality. A distributed leadership benchmarking tool was used to assess the Scheme’s effectiveness, and we found that (i) the Scheme is highly consistent with the distributed leadership benchmarks, and that (ii) the benchmarking tool is easily used in assessing the alignment (or otherwise) of teaching and learning quality initiatives with distributed leadership benchmarks. This paper will be of interest to those seeking to assess implementations of distributed leadership to improve teaching quality and leadership capacity

A FEROS spectroscopic study of the extreme O supergiant He 3-759

We present a study of the extreme O-type supergiant He 3-759 using new high-resolution FEROS data, revealing that it is a near spectroscopic twin of HD 151804 (O8 Iaf). We investigate the extinction towards He 3-759 using a variety of methods, revealing A_V ~ 4.7 mag. If we assume He 3-759 has an identical absolute K-band magnitude to HD 151804 we find that it lies in the Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm at a distance of ~6.5 kpc. We derive the physical and wind properties for He 3-759, revealing T* = 30.5 kK, log L/L(sun) = 5.9 and dM/dt = 10^-5.17 M(sun)/yr for a clumped wind whose terminal velocity is estimated at 1000 km/s. The atmosphere of He 3-759 is enriched in helium (X_He = 49%) and nitrogen (X_N = 0.3%). A reanalysis of HD 151804 and HD 152408 (WN9ha) reveals similar parameters except that the WN9ha star possesses a stronger wind and reduced surface hydrogen content. HD 151804 and HD 152408 lie within the Sco OB1 association, with initial masses of ~60 M(sun) and ages ~2.7 Myr, consistent with NGC 6231 cluster members using standard Geneva isochrones. Improved agreement with observed surface abundances are obtained for similar initial masses with more recent Geneva group predictions from which higher ages of ~3.75 Myr are obtained. No young, massive star cluster is known to be associated with He 3-759.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for A&
