    The role of values in educational leadership: an interpretive study

    This study set out to investigate the role of values in educational leadership. The renewed interest in values in both educational and corporate environments in South Africa places new pressures on members in leadership positions especially in school life. Schools are described as the ‘nurseries’ of values. The understanding of the abstract nature of values, as well as instrumentalising and implementing values in vision statements and organisational life, poses challenges to present and future school leaders. This study, based in the interpretive paradigm, is an in-depth investigation into the role of values at a former model C primary school in the Eastern Cape. Through the use of observations, document analysis, focus groups and interviews as data collection tools, this research highlights the importance of values in school leadership and how this impacts the life of the school leader. This case-study research combines theoretical and contextual frameworks to question the nature of values in leadership and uses the real-life experiences of these school leaders to resonate with current understandings of values in leadership and organisational culture. The importance of understanding these complexities in the lives and experiences of these school leaders cannot be underestimated. My findings highlight the tensions between leading successful schools (task/person efficiency) and remaining congruent with the need for leadership for social justice in post-apartheid educational institutions. The uniqueness of the school environment (‘families’ and ‘communities’) is also featured and resonates with previous literature. Through the lens of emerging leadership trends, we discover these school leaders’ understandings of values in their daily lives: they do what they are and this is reflected in this school’s unique organisational culture, which could be said to ‘transcend’ present leaders’ influence. Finally I propose that further research is necessary in order to broaden our understanding of the unique role of values in educational leadership in South Africa

    Supporting Recruitment and Retention of Young African-American and Hispanic Fathers in Community-Based Parenting Interventions Research

    Few studies to date have provided strategies for maintaining low rates of attrition when conducting longitudinal, epidemiological, or community-based research with young, minority, urban fathers. This paper highlights lessons learned from a 5-year randomized controlled trial of a fatherhood intervention that designed and implemented state-of-the-art and culturally relevant recruitment and retention methods with 348 young fathers ages 15 to 25. Qualitative findings are drawn from interviews with fathers who had been enrolled in the fatherhood intervention (n=10). While traditional recruitment and retention methods, such as incentives, were employed in this study, non-traditional methods were used as well, such as intensive community outreach, staff relationship development, recruiting specialists, and flexible contact methods. These methods were found to be helpful to young fathers in the study. Future research should incorporate, and further study, such non-traditional methods for recruiting young, minority, urban fathers into studies of parenting programs, including randomized control trials, to improve services for this underserved population

    Kiloparsec-scale ALMA Imaging of [CII] and Dust Continuum Emission of 27 Quasar Host Galaxies at z~6

    We present a study of the [CII] 158micron line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission of 27 quasar host galaxies at z~6, traced by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at a spatial resolution of ~1 physical kpc. The [CII] emission in the bright, central regions of the quasars have sizes of 1.0-4.8kpc. The dust continuum emission is typically more compact than [CII]. We find that 13/27 quasars (approximately one-half) have companion galaxies in the field, at projected separations of 3-90kpc. The position of dust emission and the Gaia-corrected positions of the central accreting black holes are cospatial (typical offsets <0.1"). This suggests that the central black holes are located at the bottom of the gravitational wells of the dark matter halos in which the z>6 quasar hosts reside. Some outliers with offsets of ~500pc can be linked to disturbed morphologies, most likely due to ongoing or recent mergers. We find no correlation between the central brightness of the FIR emission and the bolometric luminosity of the accreting black hole. The FIR-derived star-formation rate densities (SFRDs) in the host galaxies peak at the galaxies' centers, at typical values between 100 and 1000 M_sun/yr/kpc^2. These values are below the Eddington limit for star formation, but similar to those found in local ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The SFRDs drop toward larger radii by an order of magnitude. Likewise, the [CII]/FIR luminosity ratios of the quasar hosts are lowest in their centers (few x10^-4) and increase by a factor of a few toward the galaxies' outskirts, consistent with resolved studies of lower-redshift sources.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures.     Biosignatures of ancient microbial life are present across the igneous crust of the Fennoscandian shield

    Earth’s crust contains a substantial proportion of global biomass, hosting microbial life up to several kilometers depth. Yet, knowledge of the evolution and extent of life in this environment remains elusive and patchy. Here we present isotopic, molecular and morphological signatures for deep ancient life in vein mineral specimens from mines distributed across the Precambrian Fennoscandian shield. Stable carbon isotopic signatures of calcite indicate microbial methanogenesis. In addition, sulfur isotope variability in pyrite, supported by stable carbon isotopic signatures of methyl-branched fatty acids, suggest subsequent bacterial sulfate reduction. Carbonate geochronology constrains the timing of these processes to the Cenozoic. We suggest that signatures of an ancient deep biosphere and long-term microbial activity are present throughout this shield. We suggest that microbes may have been active in the continental igneous crust over geological timescales, and that subsurface investigations may be valuable in the search for extra-terrestrial life

    No evidence for [CII] halos or high-velocity outflows in z>6 quasar host galaxies

    We study the interstellar medium in a sample of 27 high-redshift quasar host galaxies at z>6, using the [CII] 158um emission line and the underlying dust continuum observed at ~1kpc resolution with ALMA. By performing uv-plane spectral stacking of both the high and low spatial resolution data, we investigate the spatial and velocity extent of gas, and the size of the dust-emitting regions. We find that the average surface brightness profile of both the [CII] and the dust continuum emission can be described by a steep component within a radius of 2kpc, and a shallower component with a scale length of 2kpc, detected up to ~10kpc. The surface brightness of the extended emission drops below ~1% of the peak at radius of ~5kpc, beyond which it constitutes 10-20% of the total measured flux density. Although the central component of the dust continuum emission is more compact than that of the [CII] emission, the extended components have equivalent profiles. The observed extended components are consistent with those predicted by hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies with similar infrared luminosities, where the dust emission is powered by star formation. The [CII] spectrum measured in the mean uv-plane stacked data can be described by a single Gaussian, with no observable [CII] broad-line emission (velocities in excess of >500km/s), that would be indicative of outflows. Our findings suggest that we are probing the interstellar medium and associated star formation in the quasar host galaxies up to radii of 10kpc, whereas we find no evidence for halos or outflows.Comment: 32 pages, 20 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Ap

    Employment of ex-prisoners with mental health problems, a realistic evaluation protocol

    Background Offenders with a mental illness are routinely excluded from vocational services due to their mental health. Employment has shown to be very important in improving mental health, reducing recidivism, and connecting people to society. This study examines the effectiveness of an established intervention which is relatively untested in this population, Individual Placement and Support (IPS), to help offenders with mental health problems into competitive employment. The overall research question is whether IPS is effective in gaining and sustaining competitive employment for offenders with a Severe Mental Illness (SMI). The context is an English criminal justice setting across different populations. The study will also measure non-vocational outcomes such as recidivism, mental health and social stability. Methods/Design A Realistic Evaluation (RE) design will address the questions “What works, for whom, and in what circumstances?” This study includes pre and post comparisons for a cohort of approximately 20 people taking part in IPS, and a similar number of controls, over a one year period. The RE also consists of interviews with practitioners and offenders in order to understand how IPS works and develops within the criminal justice system (CJS). By applying this framework the research can go from discovering whether IPS works, to how and why (or why not) IPS works. This is achieved by examining where the intervention is occurring (Context (C)), the mechanisms (M) that create particular behaviours, and how the outcomes (O) from the intervention all come together (CMOs). Employment outcomes will also be examined for all participants. Discussion By applying RE the research will permit inferences to be drawn about how and why (or why not) IPS works, by examining context, mechanisms and outcomes. IPS has never been implemented within the CJS in the United Kingdom. As a result, this evaluative research will not only provide a novel insight into the core research areas, but also how the intervention can be improved for others in the future

    Operationalizing marketable blue carbon

    The global carbon sequestration and avoided emissions potentially achieved via blue carbon is high (∌3% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions); however, it is limited by multidisciplinary and interacting uncertainties spanning the social, governance, financial, and technological dimensions. We compiled a transdisciplinary team of experts to elucidate these challenges and identify a way forward. Key actions to enhance blue carbon as a natural climate solution include improving policy and legal arrangements to ensure equitable sharing of benefits; improving stewardship by incorporating indigenous knowledge and values; clarifying property rights; improving financial approaches and accounting tools to incorporate co-benefits; developing technological solutions for measuring blue carbon sequestration at low cost; and resolving knowledge gaps regarding blue carbon cycles. Implementing these actions and operationalizing blue carbon will achieve measurable changes to atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, provide multiple co-benefits, and address national obligations associated with international agreements
