Hearing new voices: re-viewing youth justice policy through practitioners’ relationships with young people

    Get PDF
The relationship between young people and practitioners is the centre-piece of youth justice provision, yet little research-based knowledge has accumulated on its minutiae. After reviewing reforms affecting professional discretion, the paper draws on the concepts of dyadic relationships and praxis to reinvigorate a research agenda aimed at delineating a more nuanced understanding of practice relationships. Drawing on practice wisdom from across related social work fields, we argue that centralizing the practitioner-young person relationship remains the key to successful practice and thus needs greater, more detailed research attention. These claims are supported with a number of pilot interviews with youth justice workers about successful interventions that complement and extend related studies. The paper concludes with suggestions for research to enable joint activity between young people and practitioners to ‘rethink’ youth justice

A survey of interstellar HI from L alpha absorption measurements 2

    Get PDF
The Copernicus satellite surveyed the spectral region near L alpha to obtain column densities of interstellar HI toward 100 stars. The distance to 10 stars exceeds 2 kpc and 34 stars lie beyond 1 kpc. Stars with color excess E(B-V) up to 0.5 mag are observed. The value of the mean ratio of total neutral hydrogen to color excess was found to equal 5.8 x 10 to the 21st power atoms per (sq cm x mag). For stars with accurate E(B-V), the deviations from this mean are generally less than a factor of 1.5. A notable exception is the dark cloud star, rho Oph. A reduction in visual reddening efficiency for the grains that are larger than normal in the rho Oph dark cloud probably explains this result. The conversion of atomic hydrogen into molecular form in dense clouds was observed in the gas to E(B-V) correlation plots. The best estimate for the mean total gas density for clouds and the intercloud medium, as a whole, in the solar neighborhood and in the plane of the galaxy is 1.15 atoms per cu. cm; those for the atomic gas and molecular gas alone are 0.86 atoms per cu cm and 0.143 molecules per cu cm respectively. For the intercloud medium, where molecular hydrogen is a negligible fraction of the total gas, atomic gas density was found to equal 0.16 atoms per cu cm with a Gaussian scale height perpendicular to the plane of about 350 pc, as derived from high latitude stars

    Diamond degradation in hadron fields

The energy dependence of the concentration of primary displacements induced by protons and pions in diamond has been calculated in the energy range 50 MeV - 50 GeV, in the frame of the Lindhard theory. The concentrations of primary displacements induced by protons and pions have completely different energy dependencies: the proton degradation is very important at low energies, and is higher than the pion one in the whole energy range investigated, with the exception of the delta33 resonance region. Diamond has been found, theoretically, to be one order of magnitude more resistant to proton and pion irradiation in respect to silicon.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

Hysteresis and competition between disorder and crystallization in sheared and vibrated granular flow

Experiments on spherical particles in a 3D Couette cell vibrated from below and sheared from above show a hysteretic freezing/melting transition. Under sufficient vibration a crystallized state is observed, which can be melted by sufficient shear. The critical line for this transition coincides with equal kinetic energies for vibration and shear. The force distribution is double-peaked in the crystalline state and single-peaked with an approximately exponential tail in the disordered state. A linear relation between pressure and volume (dP/dV>0dP/dV > 0) exists for a continuum of partially and/or intermittently melted states over a range of parameters

Super-Alfv\'enic propagation of reconnection signatures and Poynting flux during substorms

The propagation of reconnection signatures and their associated energy are examined using kinetic particle-in-cell simulations and Cluster satellite observations. It is found that the quadrupolar out-of-plane magnetic field near the separatrices is associated with a kinetic Alfv\'en wave. For magnetotail parameters, the parallel propagation of this wave is super-Alfv\'enic (V_parallel ~ 1500 - 5500 km/s) and generates substantial Poynting flux (S ~ 10^-5 - 10^-4 W/m^2) consistent with Cluster observations of magnetic reconnection. This Poynting flux substantially exceeds that due to frozen-in ion bulk outflows and is sufficient to generate white light aurora in the Earth's ionosphere.Comment: Submitted to PRL on 11/1/2010. Effect of a Bacterial Silage Inoculant on Quality, Preservation and Utilization of Corn Silage by Beef Steers

    Get PDF
The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of treating corn forage with a microbial silage inoculant (Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product). Response to inoculation was compared with untreated forage in terms of chemical fermentation characteristics, preservation of dry matter and digestibility by beed steers

Effect of Silage Additives on the Quality and Utilization of Corn Stover Silage by Lambs

The objectives of this research were to determine the effect of treating corn stover forage with a microbial silage inoculant (Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product), a source ammoniacal nitrogen (Pro-Sil) and a mixture of organic acids (80% propionic and 20% acetic acid). Response to these additives was compared with untreated forage in terms of chemical fermentation charcteristics, digestibility of major constituents and utilization of nitrogen by lambs

Many-electron radial and angular integrals in the unitary-group approach

    Get PDF
An extension of work by Drake [Phys. Rev. A 18, 820 (1978)] to the treatment of radial and angular integrals occurring in N-electron systems is presented. It is shown that the essential results pertaining to two-electron systems adapted to Hylleraas coordinates also apply to many electrons when pairs of electrons are chosen to interact with each other in a spin-adapted basis set. These results are derived using graphical-analysis techniques in the context of the unitary-group approach. © 1992 The American Physical Society
