    Very energetic gamma rays from binary x-ray sources and other astronomical objects

    This thesis describes the observation of a number of astronomical objects using the University of Durham Atmospheric Cerenkov light detectors. The array of telescopes was used to study the Very High Energy (V.H.E.) gamma-radiation from these objects from June 1981 until November 1984.The general features of Gamma-ray astronomy are briefly discussed, and a review of the main results of previous gamma-ray observations is given. The basic theory and general characteristics of Atmospheric Cerenkov Effect experiments are reviewed. Details of the design, operation and performance of the University of Durham facility are presented in addition to details of the improvements achieved in the development of a new telescope. In particular, the new optical system is described. The main analysis procedures are explained. The adaptation of statistical techniques used to analyse the intensity of the Cerenkov light flash is described in some detail. A discussion of the problems involved in conducting an extensive search for periodicity in the data collected from Cygnus X-3 is given. A procedure for testing for transient pulsed gamma-ray emission from the Crab Pulsar is also described. The results of the observations from several objects are presented., the binary X-ray sources, Cygnus X-3, Hercules X-l and 4U0115+63, the Crab pulsar and the Galactic Plane. In addition, the preliminary results from observations of seven radio pulsars and seven other objects are given. A review of the main production mechanisms of V.H.E. gamma-radiation is given with particular emphasis on the models proposed for the high energy processes in Cygnus X-3, other binary-ray sources and pulsars

    The 1000 GeV gamma ray emission from radio pulsars

    Radio pulsars have concentrated on long observations of the Crab pulsar and showed that it emits short intense bursts and a persistent weak periodic flux at gamma-ray energies 1000 GeV. It was shown that the light curve of the persistent emission was dominated by a single peak, coincident with the position of the radio and low energy gamma-ray main pulse. The results of a more detailed analysis of the structure of this main pulse are reported following an appraisal of the timing system. It is shown that at energies 1000 GeV the duration of the main pulse is not greater than 0.4 ms, which is less than that seen at all frequencies other than radio.     The detection of 1000 GeV gamma-rays with the characteristic 6.1 ms periodicity of the radio pulsar PSR 1953 +29 is reported. This result, significant at the 5.4 beta level, provides the first direct evidence for the association of the 6 ms radio pulsar PSR1953+29 with the gamma-ray source 2CG065+0.     1000 GeV gamma rays from Cygnus X-3: An update

    Measurements of 1000 GeV gamma-rays from Cygnus X-3 made with the University of Durham facility at Dugway, Utah in 1981/82 are reviewed. The light curve of the 4.8 hour modulated emission is updated and shows evidence significant at the 4.4 sigma level for strong emission (9% of the cosmic ray rate) at phase 0.625 and less significant (1.4 sigma level) indications of weaker emission (3% of the cosmic ray rate) at phase 0.125. The effect constituting the excess on the few nights showing the strongest emission appears to arise from the smallest Cerenkov light signals suggesting a steep gamma-ray spectrum. The 1982 data have been searched unsuccessfully for evidence of emission at phase 0.2, in coincidence with the results from the ultra-high energy (extensive Air Showers (EAS) measurements in 1979-1982. A systematic investigation of a long term variation in the strength of the peak of the 4.8 hr modulated 1000 GeV gamma-ray emission has been made. We find that in addition to the approximately 34 d variation reported by us previously, a stronger effect exists at around 19d

The sporadic X-ray binary 4U 0115-63 has been observed, with probability 2.5 x 10 to the minus 6 power ergs/s to emit 1000 GeV gamma-rays with a time averaged energy flux of 6 to 10 to the 35th power

    A case report and genetic characterization of a massive acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid with delayed distant metastases.

    We describe the presentation, management, and clinical outcome of a massive acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland. The primary tumor and blood underwent exome sequencing which revealed deletions in CDKN2A as well as PPP1R13B, which induces p53. A damaging nonsynonymous mutation was noted in EP300, a histone acetylase which plays a role in cellular proliferation. This study provides the first insights into the genetic underpinnings of this cancer. Future large-scale efforts will be necessary to define the mutational landscape of salivary gland malignancies to identify therapeutic targets and biomarkers of treatment failure

    Arm bone loading index predicts DXA musculoskeletal outcomes in two samples of post-menarcheal girls

    Abstract Objective: A site-specific bone loading index was developed to predict post-menarcheal arm bone mass, geometry, areal density and non-bone lean mass using organized activity records. Methods: Two cohorts of post-menarcheal girls (A= 55, B= 48) met analysis inclusion criteria: 1) Whole body and non-dominant radius DXA scans +1.0 to +2.6 years post-menarche; 2) detailed, organized activity records available for 36 months prior to the focal DXA scan; 3) accompanying anthropometric data. DXA non-dominant arm and radius regions of interest (1/3, Ultradistal (UD)) were evaluated. An arm bone loading index (arm totBLI) was developed and refined to describe >50 activities. Separate regression analyses for Cohorts A&B tested explanatory value of arm totBLI for DXA outcomes, accounting for gynecological age, height and whole body non-bone lean mass. Results: In both cohorts, arm totBLI reflecting 3 years of peri-menarcheal activity exposure exhibited strong explanatory value for post-menarcheal radius and arm outcomes (squared semi-partial r =0.07-0.34, p<0.05), except Arm Area. For both cohorts and most outcomes, arm totBLI explained significant variance, even after adjusting for local muscle mass. Conclusions: In two independent cohorts, arm totBLI may consistently indicate osteogenic and sarcogenic properties of represented activities; additional research is necessary for further refinement and validation

    A High Statistics Search for Ultra-High Energy Gamma-Ray Emission from Cygnus X-3 and Hercules X-1

    We have carried out a high statistics (2 Billion events) search for ultra-high energy gamma-ray emission from the X-ray binary sources Cygnus X-3 and Hercules X-1. Using data taken with the CASA-MIA detector over a five year period (1990-1995), we find no evidence for steady emission from either source at energies above 115 TeV. The derived upper limits on such emission are more than two orders of magnitude lower than earlier claimed detections. We also find no evidence for neutral particle or gamma-ray emission from either source on time scales of one day and 0.5 hr. For Cygnus X-3, there is no evidence for emission correlated with the 4.8 hr X-ray periodicity or with the occurrence of large radio flares. Unless one postulates that these sources were very active earlier and are now dormant, the limits presented here put into question the earlier results, and highlight the difficulties that possible future experiments will have in detecting gamma-ray signals at ultra-high energies.Comment: 26 LaTeX pages, 16 PostScript figures, uses psfig.sty to be published in Physical Review

    Making sense of urban food festivals: cultural regeneration, disorder and hospitable cities

    This article examines urban food festivals, and in doing so it carries out a case study of Nottingham’s Food and Drink Festival (NFDF). It contends that such festivals need to be understood in relation to local contexts, such as the reputation for alcohol-related disorder associated with Nottingham’s night-time economy. Rather than being used to attract tourism, NFDF was primarily directed at existing residents of Nottingham, where it sought to produce particular kinds of guests who would be able to invest in the city’s wider regeneration. Here, the article draws on recent academic work on hospitality in demonstrating how NFDF attempted to rebrand the city centre as a more hospitable place. It concludes by showing how visitors to NFDF exhibited a sense of generosity and pride, and argues that the meaning of urban food festivals cannot therefore simply be reduced to the logic of neoliberal governance
