    A systematic review of the literature focussing upon the use of clicker-type technologies for teaching and learning in Higher Education

    Active learning involves shifting some control of the learning environment from the teacher to the learner. It requires active student participation within the classroom and experiential learning environments which have been carefully structured by teachers in order to facilitate student engagement, enhance relevance and improve recall. While there are numerous methods of implementing an active learning approach, they all share one important aspect: the learner must be actively engaged in the classroom learning and teaching processes. Audience response systems, also referred to by a range of alternative terms such as voting systems or ‘clickers’ allow opportunity for all students in a large group setting to respond to questions presented by the tutor. Essentially, students may be presented with a question and a selection of possible responses; using a small handset or mobile phone, they make their selection which is then transmitted through and registered by the system. Data can be stored and viewed at a later date or presented to the students for discussion during the taught session. There may be variations in the approach described above, however, reasons given by tutors for employing the use of clicker-type technology often include student engagement and interaction. Meta-analytical studies and systematic reviews focussing on the use of clicker-type technologies in higher education have, so far, examined educational outcomes (Grzeskowiak et al. 2015); learning outcomes (Chien et al., 2016;), cognitive outcomes (Hunsu et al, 2016); exam results and student achievement (Castillo-Manzano et al. 2016), or the conditions of use (Fies & Marshall, 2006). All but the last of these studies have concentrated on quantitative research designs involving statistical analysis to examine whether the use of clicker-type technology has had any effect on measureable outcomes such as students’ exam grades. This systematic review of the literature aims to critically examine research evidence on the use of interactive technologies designed to support teaching and learning in higher education. Specifically, the review will focus upon research which examines how clicker-type technology is experienced within large group taught sessions undertaken on campus in face-to-face contexts in higher education settings. The objectives of this systematic review can therefore be summarized as follows: • To identify the range and variety of clicker-type technologies that may be used to support large group teaching in higher education. • To synthesize and critically analyse research which examines the subjectivities of using clicker-type technologies as part of large groups face-to-face teaching and learning sessions in higher education settings. • To examine how such technologies support teaching and learning • To identify any gaps in the evidence, and to suggest a future agenda for research. In order to locate relevant papers which provide opportunity to draw from a broad disciplinary context, a systematic search was conducted on the following electronic databases: British Educational Index (BEI); Education Research Complete; Education Resource Information Centre (ERIC), The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL); Web of Science; Psychinfo; Medline and Research into Higher Education. Where available, filters were applied to focus upon peer-reviewed journals published between January 2006 and November 2018 and which were written in the English language. After completing the screening of full papers, hand searching and reference checking was also employed in order to locate any articles which may be relevant, yet not retrieved, through the search of the databases. Undertaken in four stages, the systematic review screening process adhered to the recommendations from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, (PRISMA). This conference presentation will provide a summary of the research design and report on the findings which focus upon the situated experiences of students and tutors in higher education settings involved in taught sessions where clicker-type technology has been employed

    Supporting parent-child conversations in a history museum

    BACKGROUND: Museums can serve as rich resources for families to learn about the social world through engagement with exhibits and parent-child conversation about exhibits. AIMS: This study examined ways of engaging parents and child about two related exhibits at a cultural and history museum. Sample participants consisted of families visiting the Animal Antics and the Gone Potty exhibits at the British Museum. METHODS: Whilst visiting two exhibits at the British Museum, 30 families were assigned to use a backpack of activities, 13 were assigned to a booklet of activities, and 15 were assigned to visit the exhibits without props (control condition). RESULTS: Compared to the families in the control condition, the interventions increased the amount of time parents and children engaged together with the exhibit. Additionally, recordings of the conversations revealed that adults asked more questions related to the exhibits when assigned to the two intervention conditions compared to the control group. Children engaged in more historical talk when using the booklets than in the other two conditions. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that providing support with either booklets or activities for children at exhibits may prove beneficial to parent-child conversations and engagement with museum exhibits

    Surface mannosylation of dispersion polymerisation derived nanoparticles by copper mediated click chemistry

    The synthesis of spherical polymeric nanoparticles containing alkyne surface functionalities for post poly- merisation glycosylation is described. The nanoparticles were obtained by a polymerisation induced self- assembly (PISA) inspired methodology in dispersed media by Cu(0) mediated polymerisation. A water soluble poly(ethylene glycol methacrylate-stat-propargyl methacrylate), poly(PEGMA18-stat-PgMA5), macroinitiator was first synthesised and chain extended with 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) in water using a copper wire catalyst. It was found that irrespective of the macroinitiator to HPMA ratio and the reaction time the desired spherical morphologies (<100 nm) were obtained while the absence other morphologies suggest a deviation from the classical PISA process due to chain termination in the nano- particle’s core. The obtained nanoparticles contained alkyne functionalities in the shell, which were suc- cessfully reacted by copper mediated click chemistry with fluoresceine azide and mannosides with hydro- phobic and hydrophilic spacers of different lengths. The obtained mannosylated nanoparticles displayed no significant cytotoxicity against human alveolar basal epithelial adenocarcinomic (A549) cells at any dose <0.5 mg mL−1. Preliminary binding studies confirm the ability of the mannosylated nanoparticles to bind to human lectin dendritic cell-specific intercellular adhesion molecule-3-grabbing non-integrin (DC-SIGN). The methodology reported here is a convenient route to well-defined spherical and shell- functionalisable nanoparticles to create libraries of bio-active nanomaterials

    Marketing Actions and the Value of Customer Assets: A Framework for Customer Asset Management

    This article develops a framework for assessing how marketing actions affect customers’lifetime value to the firm. The framework is organized around four critical actions that firms must take to effectively manage the asset value of the customer base: database creation, market segmentation, forecasting customer purchase behavior, and resource allocation. In this framework, customer lifetime value is treated as a dynamic construct, that is, it influences the eventual allocation of marketing resources but is also influenced by that allocation. By viewing customers as assets and systematically managing these assets, a firm can identify the most appropriate marketing actions to acquire, maintain, and enhance customer assets and thereby maximize financial returns. The article discusses in detail how to assess customer lifetime value and manage customers as assets.     Physiotherapy and occupational therapy vs no therapy in mild to moderate Parkinson disease: a randomized clinical trial

    IMPORTANCE It is unclear whether physiotherapy and occupational therapy are clinically effective and cost-effective in Parkinson disease (PD). OBJECTIVE To perform a large pragmatic randomized clinical trial to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of individualized physiotherapy and occupational therapy in PD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS The PD REHAB Trial was a multicenter, open-label, parallel group, controlled efficacy trial. A total of 762 patients with mild to moderate PD were recruited from 38 sites across the United Kingdom. Recruitment took place between October 2009 and June 2012, with 15 months of follow-up. INTERVENTIONS Participants with limitations in activities of daily living (ADL) were randomized to physiotherapy and occupational therapy or no therapy. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome was the Nottingham Extended Activities of Daily Living (NEADL) Scale score at 3 months after randomization. Secondary outcomes were health-related quality of life (assessed by Parkinson Disease Questionnaire–39 and EuroQol-5D); adverse events; and caregiver quality of life. Outcomes were assessed before trial entry and then 3, 9, and 15 months after randomization. RESULTS Of the 762 patients included in the study (mean [SD] age, 70 [9.1] years), 381 received physiotherapy and occupational therapy and 381 received no therapy. At 3 months, there was no difference between groups in NEADL total score (difference, 0.5 points; 95%CI, −0.7 to 1.7; P = .41) or Parkinson Disease Questionnaire–39 summary index (0.007 points; 95%CI, −1.5 to 1.5; P = .99). The EuroQol-5D quotient was of borderline significance in favor of therapy (−0.03; 95%CI, −0.07 to −0.002; P = .04). The median therapist contact time was 4 visits of 58 minutes over 8 weeks. Repeated-measures analysis showed no difference in NEADL total score, but Parkinson Disease Questionnaire–39 summary index (diverging 1.6 points per annum; 95%CI, 0.47 to 2.62; P = .005) and EuroQol-5D score (0.02; 95%CI, 0.00007 to 0.03; P = .04) showed small differences in favor of therapy. There was no difference in adverse events. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Physiotherapy and occupational therapy were not associated with immediate or medium-term clinically meaningful improvements in ADL or quality of life in mild to moderate PD. This evidence does not support the use of low-dose, patient-centered, goal-directed physiotherapy and occupational therapy in patients in the early stages of PD. Future research should explore the development and testing of more structured and intensive physical and occupational therapy programs in patients with all stages of PD

    Allo-network drugs: harnessing allostery in cellular networks

    Allosteric drugs are increasingly used because they produce fewer side effects. Allosteric signal propagation does not stop at the 'end' of a protein, but may be dynamically transmitted across the cell. Here, we propose that the concept of allosteric drugs can be broadened to allo-network drugs, whose effects can propagate either within a protein, or across several proteins, to enhance or inhibit specific interactions along a pathway. We posit that current allosteric drugs are a special case of allo-network drugs, and suggest that allo-network drugs can achieve specific, limited changes at the systems level, and in this way can achieve fewer side effects and lower toxicity. Finally, we propose steps and methods to identify allo-network drug targets and sites outlining a new paradigm in systems-based drug design.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 69 references, a cover story of the 2011 December issue of Trends in Pharmacological Science

    ‘A Girl's Love’: Lord Alfred Douglas as Homoerotic Muse in the Poetry of Olive Custance

    This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Women: a Cultural Review on 15/09/2011, available online: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/09574042.2011.585045.This article explores the relationship between the poet Olive Custance and her husband Lord Alfred Douglas, arguing that Custance constructed Douglas as a male muse figure in her poetry, particularly the sequence ‘Songs of a Fairy Princess’ (Rainbows 1902). The introduction sets out Custance's problematic historical positioning as a ‘decadent’ poet who published nothing following the Great War, but whose work came too late to fit into strictly ‘fin de siècle’ categories. I suggest, however, that Custance's oscillating constructions of gender and sexuality make her more relevant to the concerns of modernity than has previously been acknowledged and her work anticipates what is now termed ‘queer’. The first main section of the article traces the cultural background of the fin de siècle male muse, arguing that Custance's key influences—male homoerotic writers such as Wilde and Pater—meant it was logical that she should imagine the muse as male, despite the problems associated with gender-reversals of the muse-poet relationship which have been identified by several feminist critics. I then move on to focus specifically on how Shakespearean discourses of gender performance and cross-dressing played a key role in Custance and Douglas's courtship, as they exchanged the fluid roles of ‘Prince’, ‘Princess’ and ‘Page’. The penultimate section of the article focuses on discourses of fairy tale and fantasia in Custance's ‘Songs of a Fairy Princess’ sequence, in which these fantasy roles contribute to a construction of Douglas as a feminised object, and the relationship between the ‘Prince’ and ‘Princess’ is described in terms of narcissistic sameness. My paper concludes by tracing the demise of Custance and Douglas's relationship; as Douglas attempted to be more ‘manly’, he sought to escape the role of object, resulting in Custance losing her male muse. But her sexually-dissident constructions of the male muse remain important experiments worthy of critical attention

    No interactions between previously associated 2-hour glucose gene variants and physical activity or BMI on 2-hour glucose levels.

    Gene-lifestyle interactions have been suggested to contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. Glucose levels 2 h after a standard 75-g glucose challenge are used to diagnose diabetes and are associated with both genetic and lifestyle factors. However, whether these factors interact to determine 2-h glucose levels is unknown. We meta-analyzed single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) × BMI and SNP × physical activity (PA) interaction regression models for five SNPs previously associated with 2-h glucose levels from up to 22 studies comprising 54,884 individuals without diabetes. PA levels were dichotomized, with individuals below the first quintile classified as inactive (20%) and the remainder as active (80%). BMI was considered a continuous trait. Inactive individuals had higher 2-h glucose levels than active individuals (β = 0.22 mmol/L [95% CI 0.13-0.31], P = 1.63 × 10(-6)). All SNPs were associated with 2-h glucose (β = 0.06-0.12 mmol/allele, P ≤ 1.53 × 10(-7)), but no significant interactions were found with PA (P > 0.18) or BMI (P ≥ 0.04). In this large study of gene-lifestyle interaction, we observed no interactions between genetic and lifestyle factors, both of which were associated with 2-h glucose. It is perhaps unlikely that top loci from genome-wide association studies will exhibit strong subgroup-specific effects, and may not, therefore, make the best candidates for the study of interactions
