A unified approach for the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation
This paper explores the use of a discrete singular convolution algorithm as a
unified approach for numerical integration of the Fokker-Planck equation. The
unified features of the discrete singular convolution algorithm are discussed.
It is demonstrated that different implementations of the present algorithm,
such as global, local, Galerkin, collocation, and finite difference, can be
deduced from a single starting point. Three benchmark stochastic systems, the
repulsive Wong process, the Black-Scholes equation and a genuine nonlinear
model, are employed to illustrate the robustness and to test accuracy of the
present approach for the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation via a
time-dependent method. An additional example, the incompressible Euler
equation, is used to further validate the present approach for more difficult
problems. Numerical results indicate that the present unified approach is
robust and accurate for solving the Fokker-Planck equation.Comment: 19 page

Takeovers and cooperatives: governance and stability in non-corporate firms

will charge less than the profit maximizing price. Starting at the usual monopoly
price, a small price reduction will have a second order effect on profits but a first order
effect on consumer surplus. Despite this desirable static result, it has been argued that
cooperatives are vulnerable to take-over by outsiders who will run them as for-profit
businesses. This paper studies takeovers of cooperatives. We argue that there will not
be excessive takeovers of cooperatives due to the Grossman-Hart problem of free

Measurements of the Generalized Electric and Magnetic Polarizabilities of the Proton at Low Q2 Using the VCS Reaction
The mean square polarizability radii of the proton have been measured for the
first time in a virtual Compton scattering experiment performed at the
MIT-Bates out-of-plane scattering facility. Response functions and
polarizabilities obtained from a dispersion analysis of the data at Q2=0.06
GeV2/c2 are in agreement with O(p3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory.
The data support the dominance of mesonic effects in the polarizabilities, and
the increase of beta with increasing Q2 is evidence for the cancellation of
long-range diamagnetism by short-range paramagnetism from the pion cloud

out-of-plane scattering (OOPS) facility. The data reported here are
particularly sensitive to the transverse electric amplitude () of the
transition. Analyzed together with previous data yield
precise quadrupole to dipole amplitude ratios and and
for . They give credence to the conjecture of
deformation in hadronic systems favoring, at low , the dominance of

Measurement of the Partial Cross Sections s(TT), s(LT) and [s(T)+epsilon*s(L)] of the p(e,e' pi+)n Reaction in the Delta(1232) Resonance
We report new precision p(e,e' pi+})n measurements in the Delta(1232)
resonance at Q2 = 0.127(GeV/c)2 obtained at the MIT-Bates Out-Of-Plane
scattering facility. These are the lowest, but non-zero, Q2 measurements in the
pi+ channel. The data offer new tests of the theoretical calculations,
particularly of the background amplitude contributions. The chiral effective
field theory and Sato-Lee model calculations are not in agreement with this
experiment
Variety of Methodological Approach in Economics
It has been argued by some that the distinction between orthodox economics and heterodox economics does not fit the growing variety in economic theory, unified by a common methodological approach. On the other hand, it remains a central characteristic of heterodox economics that it does not share this methodological approach, but rather represents a range of alternative methodological approaches. The paper explores the evidence, and arguments, for variety in economics at different levels, and a range of issues which arise. This requires in turn a discussion of the meaning of variety in economics at the different levels of reality, methodology, method and theory. It is concluded that there is scope for more, rather than less, variety in economic methodologies, as well as within methodologies. Further, if variety is not to take the form of “anything goes”, then critical discussion by economists of different approaches to economics, and of variety itself, is required
Haemophilus Influenzae Responds to Glucocorticoids Used in Asthma Therapy by Modulation of Biofilm Formation and Antibiotic Resistance
Glucocorticosteroids are used as a main treatment to reduce airway inflammation in people with asthma who suffer from neutrophilic airway inflammation, a condition frequently associ- ated with Haemophilus influenzae colonization. Here we show that glucocorticosteroids have a direct influence on the behavior of H. influenzae that may account for associated difficulties with therapy. Using a mouse model of infection, we show that cortico- steroid treatment promotes H. influenzae persistence. Transcrip- tomic analysis of bacteria either isolated from infected mouse airway or grown in laboratory medium identified a number of genes encoding regulatory factors whose expression responded to the presence of glucocorticosteroids. Importantly, a number of these corticosteroid-responsive genes also showed elevated expression in H. influenzae within sputum from asthma patients undergoing steroid treatment. Addition of corticosteroid to H. influenzae led to alteration in biofilm formation and enhanced resistance to azithromycin, and promoted azithromycin resistance in an animal model of respiratory infection. Taken together, these data strongly suggest that H. influenzae can respond directly to corticosteroid treatment in the airway potentially influencing biofilm formation, persistence and the efficacy of antibiotic treatment
Sequential two-player games with ambiguity
Author's pre-printIf players' beliefs are strictly nonadditive, the Dempster–Shafer updating rule can be used to define beliefs off the equilibrium path. We define an equilibrium concept in sequential two-person games where players update their beliefs with the Dempster–Shafer updating rule. We show that in the limit as uncertainty tends to zero, our equilibrium approximates Bayesian Nash equilibrium. We argue that our equilibrium can be used to define a refinement of Bayesian Nash equilibrium by imposing context-dependent constraints on beliefs under uncertainty.ESRC senior research fellowship scheme, H5242750259
