    Theory of High-Tc Superconductivity: Accurate Predictions of Tc

    The superconducting transition temperatures of high-Tc compounds based on copper, iron, ruthenium and certain organic molecules are discovered to be dependent on bond lengths, ionic valences, and Coulomb coupling between electronic bands in adjacent, spatially separated layers [1]. Optimal transition temperature, denoted as T_c0, is given by the universal expression kBTc0=e2Λ/ζk_BT_c0 = e^2 \Lambda / \ell\zeta; \ell is the spacing between interacting charges within the layers, \zeta is the distance between interacting layers and \Lambda is a universal constant, equal to about twice the reduced electron Compton wavelength (suggesting that Compton scattering plays a role in pairing). Non-optimum compounds in which sample degradation is evident typically exhibit Tc < T_c0. For the 31+ optimum compounds tested, the theoretical and experimental T_c0 agree statistically to within +/- 1.4 K. The elemental high Tc building block comprises two adjacent and spatially separated charge layers; the factor e^2/\zeta arises from Coulomb forces between them.     Strong laws of large numbers for sub-linear expectations

    We investigate three kinds of strong laws of large numbers for capacities with a new notion of independently and identically distributed (IID) random variables for sub-linear expectations initiated by Peng. It turns out that these theorems are natural and fairly neat extensions of the classical Kolmogorov's strong law of large numbers to the case where probability measures are no longer additive. An important feature of these strong laws of large numbers is to provide a frequentist perspective on capacities.Comment: 10 page

    Coma revealed as an extended hard X-rays source by INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI

    Aims. We report the INTEGRAL/IBIS observations of the Coma Cluster in the hard X-ray/soft-ray domain. Methods. Since the Coma Cluster appears as an extended source, its global intensity and significance cannot be directly extracted with standard coded mask analysis. We used the method of imaging the extended sources with a coded mask telescope developed by Renaud et al. (2006). Results. The imaging capabilities and the sensitivity of the IBIS/ISGRI coded mask instrument allows us to identify for the first time the site of the emission above ~ 15 keV. We have studied the Coma Cluster morphology in the 18-30keV band and found that it follows the prediction based on X-ray observations.We also bring constraints on the non-thermal mechanism contribution at higher energies.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A Letter

The dependence of the exciton binding energy upon the dot radius and the offsets is studied for different sets of electron and hole effective masses

    Modeling of subglacial hydrological development following rapid supraglacial lake drainage

    The rapid drainage of supraglacial lakes injects substantial volumes of water to the bed of the Greenland ice sheet over short timescales. The effect of these water pulses on the development of basal hydrological systems is largely unknown. To address this, we develop a lake drainage model incorporating both (1) a subglacial radial flux element driven by elastic hydraulic jacking and (2) downstream drainage through a linked channelized and distributed system. Here we present the model and examine whether substantial, efficient subglacial channels can form during or following lake drainage events and their effect on the water pressure in the surrounding distributed system. We force the model with field data from a lake drainage site, 70 km from the terminus of Russell Glacier in West Greenland. The model outputs suggest that efficient subglacial channels do not readily form in the vicinity of the lake during rapid drainage and instead water is evacuated primarily by a transient turbulent sheet and the distributed system. Following lake drainage, channels grow but are not large enough to reduce the water pressure in the surrounding distributed system, unless preexisting channels are present throughout the domain. Our results have implications for the analysis of subglacial hydrological systems in regions where rapid lake drainage provides the primary mechanism for surface-to-bed connections

    Intelligent Liver Function Testing (iLFT):A trial of automated diagnosis and staging of liver disease in Primary Care

    Background: Liver function tests (LFTs) are frequently requested blood tests which may indicate liver disease. LFTs are commonly abnormal, the causes of which can be complex and frequently under investigated. This can lead to missed opportunities to diagnose and treat liver disease at an early stage. We developed an automated investigation algorithm, which would maximise early diagnosis of liver related diseases. Our aim was to determine whether this new pathway of care, Intelligent Liver Function testing (iLFT) increased diagnosis of liver disease and was cost-effective. Methods: We developed an automated system that further investigated abnormal LFTs on initial testing samples to generate a probable diagnosis and management plan. We integrated an automated investigation algorithm into the laboratory management system, based on minimal diagnostic criteria, liver fibrosis estimation, and reflex testing for causes of liver disease. This algorithm then generated a diagnosis and/or management plan. A stepped-wedged trial design was utilised to compare LFT outcomes in General Practices in the 6 months before and after introduction of the iLFT system. Diagnostic outcomes were collated and compared. Results: Using iLFT, the diagnosis of liver disease was increased by 43%. It was cost-effective with a low initial incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of £284 per correct diagnosis, and a saving to the NHS of £3,216 per patient lifetime. Conclusions: iLFT increases liver diagnosis, improves quality of care, and is highly cost-effective. This can be achieved with minor changes to working practices and exploitation of functionality existing within modern laboratory diagnostics systems. Lay Summary: There is a growing epidemic of advanced liver disease, this could be offset by early detection and management. Checking liver blood tests (LFTs) should be an opportunity diagnose liver problems, but abnormal results are often incompletely investigated. In this study we were able to substantially increase the diagnostic yield of the abnormal LFTs using the automated iLFT system. With the addition of referral recommendations and management plans, this strategy provides optimum investigation and management of LFTs and is cost saving to the NHS

    'I know they are not trained in dementia': Addressing the need for specialist dementia training for home care workers

    Global population ageing has meant a rapid increase in the numbers of older people with dementia, most of whom live in their own homes. Staying at home is an important determinant of health and well‐being. As care needs increase, the quality of community support which older people receive directly influences their capacity to remain in their own homes. While many are supported informally by family carers, formal support provided by home care workers often enables them to remain at home for longer period. However, providing community‐based care for people with dementia can be challenging. Workers often lack training in dementia‐specific care for clients with increasingly complex needs, and typically work without direct supervision. As the demand for person‐centred home care for people with dementia increases, specialist dementia training for home care workers is urgently needed. In this qualitative study, we used in‐depth interviews of a purposive sample, comprising 15 family carers and four older people with dementia, to understand the experience of receiving community care. Data analysis was guided by Braun and Clarke's approach to thematic analysis and revealed the following five overlapping themes, relating to home care workers’ understanding of dementia, person‐centred care, communication and rapport, mutual collaboration, and the influence of organisational constraints on continuity of care. Although participants acknowledged that service providers operated under challenging circumstances, they were frustrated with home care workers’ lack of dementia knowledge and inconsistent staff rostering. Conversely, an understanding of the lived experience of dementia, effective communication and rapport, and continuity of care contributed significantly to a positive experience of receiving care. The findings of this study will be used to inform the essential elements of a training program aimed at enabling and empowering a skilled, specialist home care workforce to support older people with dementia to live well at home for as long as possible

    Measurements of the Generalized Electric and Magnetic Polarizabilities of the Proton at Low Q2 Using the VCS Reaction

    The mean square polarizability radii of the proton have been measured for the first time in a virtual Compton scattering experiment performed at the MIT-Bates out-of-plane scattering facility. Response functions and polarizabilities obtained from a dispersion analysis of the data at Q2=0.06 GeV2/c2 are in agreement with O(p3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The data support the dominance of mesonic effects in the polarizabilities, and the increase of beta with increasing Q2 is evidence for the cancellation of long-range diamagnetism by short-range paramagnetism from the pion cloud

    Investigation of the conjectured nucleon deformation at low momentum transfer

    We report new precise H(e,ep)π0(e,e^\prime p)\pi^0 measurements at the Δ(1232)\Delta(1232) resonance at Q2=0.127Q^2= 0.127 (GeV/c)2^2 using the MIT/Bates out-of-plane scattering (OOPS) facility. The data reported here are particularly sensitive to the transverse electric amplitude (E2E2) of the γNΔ\gamma^* N\to\Delta transition. Analyzed together with previous data yield precise quadrupole to dipole amplitude ratios EMR=(2.3±0.3stat+sys±0.6model)EMR = (-2.3 \pm 0.3_{stat+sys} \pm 0.6_{model})% and CMR=(6.1±0.2stat+sys±0.5model)CMR = (-6.1 \pm 0.2_{stat+sys}\pm 0.5_{model})% and for M1+3/2=(41.4±0.3stat+sys±0.4model)(103/mπ+)M^{3/2}_{1+} = (41.4 \pm 0.3_{stat+sys}\pm 0.4_{model})(10^{-3}/m_{\pi^+}). They give credence to the conjecture of deformation in hadronic systems favoring, at low Q2Q^2, the dominance of mesonic effects.Comment: 4 pages, 1figur
