    A Study of Juvenile Waiver

    Get PDF
In a footnote to its recent decision, In re Dennis M, the California Supreme Court recommended, that juvenile officers and police be prepared to give their compulsory Miranda warning in terms that reflect the language and experience of today’s juveniles. This language stimulated our attempt to draft and test the efficacy of a simplified Miranda warning, potentially more understandable to juveniles, and consistent with juvenile law requirements. The purpose of this article is to relate the findings of an empirical study which sought to answer two questions: 1) should the Miranda warning be revised for the juvenile offender; and 2) does a minor have the capacity knowingly and intelligently to waive his Miranda rights

Characterization of U-Mo Foils for AFIP-7

Twelve AFIP in-process foil samples, fabricated by either Y-12 or LANL, were shipped from LANL to PNNL for potential characterization using optical and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Of these twelve, nine different conditions were examined to one degree or another using both techniques. For this report a complete description of the results are provided for one archive foil from each source of material, and one unirradiated piece of a foil of each source that was irradiated in the Advanced Test Reactor. Additional data from two other LANL conditions are summarized in very brief form in an appendix. The characterization revealed that all four characterized conditions contained a cold worked microstructure to different degrees. The Y-12 foils exhibited a higher degree of cold working compared to the LANL foils, as evidenced by the highly elongated and obscure U-Mo grain structure present in each foil. The longitudinal orientations for both of the Y-12 foils possesses a highly laminar appearance with such a distorted grain structure that it was very difficult to even offer a range of grain sizes. The U-Mo grain structure of the LANL foils, by comparison, consisted of a more easily discernible grain structure with a mix of equiaxed and elongated grains. Both materials have an inhomogenous grain structure in that all of the characterized foils possess abnormally coarse grains

Peripheral Blood Pressure Changes Induced by Dobutamine Do Not Alter BOLD Signals in The Human Brain

In extending the use of functional MRI to neuropharmacology, a primary area of concern is that peripheral blood pressure changes induced by pharmacological agents could independently produce a change in the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signal, resulting in difficulties distinguishing or interpreting drug-induced neural activations. In the present study, we utilized intravenous dobutamine, a beta-adrenergic receptor agonist, to increase the mean arterial blood pressure (MABP), while examining the effects of MABP changes on the BOLD signal in cocaine-dependent participants. Dobutamine infusion significantly increased the MABP from 93 ± 8 mm Hg to 106 ± 12 mm Hg (P \u3c 0.0005), but did not produce a significant global BOLD signal. Yet, a few voxels in the anterior cingulate showed BOLD signal changes that paralleled the changes in blood pressure (BP). Our observations support the conclusion that following the infusion of psychoactive agents, brain BOLD signals accurately reflect neuronal activity, even in the face of relatively large peripheral cardiovascular effects that transiently increase systemic BP

Planning, Preparation, And Implementation Of Turbomachinery Turnarounds.

Tutorialpg. 243-252Anyone involved in overhauling equipment during a scheduled turnaround knows the importance of having the right people and the right tools available in the right places at the right time. Obviously, the orchestration of the necessary events, which must occur, demands foresight and analytical thinking. The optimum amount of planning and preparation will depend on the complexity and size of the turnaround. Experience indicates that each turnaround is unique. While turnarounds may involve similar work items, constraints such as timing requirements and associated work interactions differ from one turnaround to the next. Nevertheless, prior work plans can serve as a basis for subsequent turnarounds. Generally, scheduled turnarounds are divided into three phases: • Pre-Turnaround Phase • Turnaround Implementation Phase • Post-Turnaround Phase This tutorial addresses the items to be considered and tasks to be accomplished during each of the critical phases, with emphasis on the pre-turnaround and implementation phases. Suggestions and examples are provided to improve task management

Learning from organisational embedding for climate resilience

    Get PDF
The term ‘resilience’, which is integral to the UK Climate Resilience Programme (UKCR), has been used increasingly in academic, practice and public discourse around climate change, and crises more generally. The term’s appeal comes from its ability to frame crises not as uncontrollable and uncertain phenomena to be feared, but as challenges over which one can triumph, with the potential for improving society

Discovery of a new Local Group Dwarf Galaxy Candidate in UNIONS: Bo\"otes V

We present the discovery of Bo\"otes V, a new ultra-faint dwarf galaxy candidate. This satellite is detected as a resolved overdensity of stars during an ongoing search for new Local Group dwarf galaxy candidates in the UNIONS photometric dataset. It has a physical half-light radius of 26.95.4+7.5^{+7.5}_{-5.4} pc, a VV-band magnitude of -4.5 ±\pm 0.4 mag, and resides at a heliocentric distance of approximately 100 kpc. We use Gaia DR3 astrometry to identify member stars, characterize the systemic proper motion, and confirm the reality of this faint stellar system. The brightest star in this system was followed up using Gemini GMOS-N long-slit spectroscopy and is measured to have a metallicity of [Fe/H] == -2.85 ±\pm 0.10 dex and a heliocentric radial velocity of vrv_r = 5.1 ±\pm 13.4 km s1^{-1}. Bo\"otes V is larger (in terms of scale radius), more distant, and more metal-poor than the vast majority of globular clusters. It is likely that Bo\"otes V is an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, though future spectroscopic studies will be necessary to definitively classify this object.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. Accepted for publication in the AAS Journals. Please note that this paper was submitted in coordination with the work of William Cerny et al. 2022. These authors independently discovered this same satellite so our two research groups have coordinated the submission of these discovery paper

Symbiotic modeling: Linguistic Anthropology and the promise of chiasmus

Reflexive observations and observations of reflexivity: such agendas are by now standard practice in anthropology. Dynamic feedback loops between self and other, cause and effect, represented and representamen may no longer seem surprising; but, in spite of our enhanced awareness, little deliberate attention is devoted to modeling or grounding such phenomena. Attending to both linguistic and extra-linguistic modalities of chiasmus (the X figure), a group of anthropologists has recently embraced this challenge. Applied to contemporary problems in linguistic anthropology, chiasmus functions to highlight and enhance relationships of interdependence or symbiosis between contraries, including anthropology’s four fields, the nature of human being and facets of being human
