    Peccaries (Artiodactyla: Tayassuidae) from the Late Miocene to Early Pliocene Gray Fossil Site: Regional Implications with a Review of Tayassuinae

    Analysis of the Gray Fossil Site peccary material indicates the presence of up to three species. Comparisons with the tayassuid material known from the Tyner Farm and Bone Valley Formation of Florida allows the identification of Mylohyus elmorei and at the GFS. Within the GFS material, Prosthennops cf. P. serus and cf. Catagonus sp. are also tentatively recognized but further verification is required. The known range for Prosthennops is expanded into the Appalachian region. Presence of M. elmorei at the Gray Fossil Site provides the first known occurrence of this species outside of the Palmetto fauna of Florida, indicating that the species once exhibited a larger range within the southeastern United States than previously known. Overall, the presence of M. elmorei.indicates another parallel to the Palmetto Fauna of the Bone Valley Formation whereas Prosthennops cf. P. serus may indicate a connection to the Hemphillian of the western United States

    The Time for Judgment Has Arrived: The Zivotofsky v. Clinton Effect on the Political Question Doctrine\u27s Application to the War Powers Resolution

    The War Powers Resolution was enacted to serve as a congressional restraint on the President’s power to engage in Military Action. Since then, Congress and the President have disagreed over the enforcement and constitutionality of the statute. Nonetheless, courts have dismissed cases regarding the War Powers Resolution claiming it is of a solely political nature i.e. a political question. The Judiciary traditionally apply the political question doctrine to issues regarding foreign affairs and, in effect, avoided hearing cases regarding the specifics of the war powers pertaining to Executive and Congress. This lack of judicial determination has resulted in the and unclear assignment of constitutional war powers authority to the branches. In Zivotofsky v. Clinton, the Supreme Court held that the political question doctrine cannot be applied to cases regarding statutory and constitutional interpretation. This narrowing of the political question doctrine potentially lowers the standard of justicability. This Comment advocates, under the new Zivotofsky standard, for the Supreme Court to review statutory and constitutional disputes arising from the War Power’s resolution

    Reliable and validated assessments of introductory physics have been instrumental in driving curricular and pedagogical reforms that lead to improved student learning. As part of an effort to systematically improve our sophomore-level Classical Mechanics and Math Methods course (CM 1) at CU Boulder, we have developed a tool to assess student learning of CM 1 concepts in the upper-division. The Colorado Classical Mechanics/Math Methods Instrument (CCMI) builds on faculty consensus learning goals and systematic observations of student difficulties. The result is a 9-question open-ended post-test that probes student learning in the first half of a two-semester classical mechanics / math methods sequence.     Heavy Metal Chemistry of Sediments in Caves of the Springfield Plateau, Missouri-Arkansas-Oklahoma: A Link to Subterranean Biodiversity

    We used X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to compare the heavy metal chemistry of sediments in caves in rural and urban areas to the chemistry of sediments from a control cave in a relatively undisturbed watershed in the Springfield (MO) Plateau. Sediment from Smallin Cave near Ozark, MO, the control cave, has the smallest peak sizes for Zn and Mn and a moderately-sized Pb peak. Sediment from the rural cave exhibited larger peaks of Zn and Mn and a smaller Pb peak. Sediment from the urban cave had the largest Zn, Mn and Pb peaks. Interestingly, smaller peak sizes appear to correlate to the presence of aquatic troglobites. The control cave hosts the most diverse troglobitic fauna and has sediment with smaller peak sizes. Ruark caves are rural caves, and are barren of troglobites and have sediment with larger peak sizes. Giboney Cave, an urban cave in Doling Park in Springfield, MO, provides the most interesting evidence. Giboney Cave splits into two branches, each of which has a unique chemical fingerprint. One channel is barren of cave life and has sediment that exhibits large metal peaks. The second channel hosts aquatic troglobites and has sediment that has small metal peaks. These findings are of particular importance because the caves of the Springfield Plateau host abundant troglobitic species, including the endangered Ozarks cavefish (Amblyopsis rosae). Sediment metal concentrations may indicate which cave systems are capable of supporting life, with XRF analysis providing a non-destructive, rapid way to identify such systems

    The environments and hosts of metal absorption at z>5

    A growing population of metal absorbers are observed at z>5, many showing strong evolution in incidence approaching the epoch of hydrogen reionization. Follow-up surveys examining fields around these metals have resulted in galaxy detections but the direct physical relationship between the detected galaxies and absorbers is unclear. Upcoming observations will illuminate this galaxy-absorber relationship, but the theoretical framework for interpreting these observations is lacking. To inform future z>5 studies, we define the expected relationship between metals and galaxies using the Technicolor Dawn simulation to model metal absorption from z=5-7, encompassing the end of reionization. We find that metal absorber types and strengths are slightly better associated with their environment than with the traits of their host galaxies, as absorption system strengths are more strongly correlated with the local galaxy overdensity than the stellar mass of their host galaxy. For redshifts prior to the end of the epoch of reionization, strong high ionization transitions like C IV are more spatially correlated with brighter galaxies on scales of a few hundred proper kpc than are low ionization systems, due to the former's preference for environments with higher UVB amplitudes and those ions' relative rarity at z>6. Post-reionization, the galaxy counts near these high-ionization ions are reduced, and increase surrounding certain low-ionization ions due to a combination of their relative abundances and preferred denser gas phase. We conclude that galaxy-absorber relationships are expected to evolve rapidly such that high-ionization absorbers are better tracers of galaxies pre-reionization while low-ionization absorbers are better post-reionization.Comment: Accepted to MNRA
