This paper aims to illustrate and analyse the incidence of foreign words inherent to the special language of fashion in the Vocabolario domestico del dialetto foggiano (1929) by Carlo Villani (Foggia 1855 - Naples 1931). Although it has been published during the Twenties, a period notoriously hostile to dialects, the vocabulary follows the Gentilian cultural climate, well-disposed towards the works of enhancement of local linguistic heritage, which, especially for school, reach their peak in the 1920s. Furthermore, the vocabulary is the latest heir to a municipal and family lexicographic tradition, which flourished in the mid-nineteenth century, on the model of Basilio Puoti’s Vocabolario domestico napoletano e toscano. However, if the forerunner Saggio di vocabolario familiare (1841) follows Puoti’s purist thought, explicitly criticizing foreign words, the Vocabolario domestico del dialetto foggiano lemmatises them by showing their productivity in local speech; it provides interesting information for the history of language and customs at the same time (as can be seen from the glossary offered in this paper, properly commented). Nonetheless, this tolerance seems confined to the dialectal speech only: the translations proposed are mostly hyperonyms or words characterised by a greater semantic extension, which sacrifice the more precise semantic of the original forms, while compromising the memory of the referent
Sjećanje na poplavu u Firenci 1966. – osnovni elementi memorijskog narativa
Cardiac manifestations of PRKAG2 mutation.
BACKGROUND:The Protein Kinase AMP-Activated Non-Catalytic Subunit Gamma 2 (PRKAG2) cardiac syndrome is characterized by glycogen accumulation in the cardiac tissue. The disease presents clinically with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), and it is often associated with conduction abnormalities. CASE PRESENTATION:A 23 year-old female with history of Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) and HCM presented for evaluation after an episode of Non-ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI). The patient was found to have severe coronary bridging on angiography and underwent an unroofing of the left anterior descending artery (LAD). Due to the constellation of symptoms, the patient underwent genetic testing and a cardiac muscle biopsy. Genetic testing was significant for an Arg302Gln mutation in the PRKAG2 gene. Cardiac tissue biopsy revealed significant myocyte hypertrophy and large vacuoles with glycogen stores. CONCLUSION:The pathologic and genetics findings of our patient are consistent with PRKAG2 syndrome. Patients presenting with conduction abnormalities and suspected HCM should be considered for genetic testing to identify possible underlying genetic etiologies
Embeddings of block-radial functions -- approximation properties and nuclearity
Let be a subspace of the Besov space
that consists of block-radial (multi-radial)
functions. We study an asymptotic behaviour of approximation numbers of compact
embeddings . Moreover we find the sufficient and necessary
condition for nuclearity of the above embeddings. Analogous results are proved
for fractional Sobolev spaces .Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1809.0083
Reading strategies - from L1 to L2.
This paper intends to present a selection of the most useful reading strategies for the typical ESP students in Brazilian universities, showing whether the readers use them in their native language or not, the way the teacher should develop these strategies in the classroom, the problems involved in their use and the reasons for using them
Vision-Language Integration in Multimodal Video Transformers (Partially) Aligns with the Brain
Integrating information from multiple modalities is arguably one of the
essential prerequisites for grounding artificial intelligence systems with an
understanding of the real world. Recent advances in video transformers that
jointly learn from vision, text, and sound over time have made some progress
toward this goal, but the degree to which these models integrate information
from modalities still remains unclear. In this work, we present a promising
approach for probing a pre-trained multimodal video transformer model by
leveraging neuroscientific evidence of multimodal information processing in the
brain. Using brain recordings of participants watching a popular TV show, we
analyze the effects of multi-modal connections and interactions in a
pre-trained multi-modal video transformer on the alignment with uni- and
multi-modal brain regions. We find evidence that vision enhances masked
prediction performance during language processing, providing support that
cross-modal representations in models can benefit individual modalities.
However, we don't find evidence of brain-relevant information captured by the
joint multi-modal transformer representations beyond that captured by all of
the individual modalities. We finally show that the brain alignment of the
pre-trained joint representation can be improved by fine-tuning using a task
that requires vision-language inferences. Overall, our results paint an
optimistic picture of the ability of multi-modal transformers to integrate
vision and language in partially brain-relevant ways but also show that
improving the brain alignment of these models may require new approaches
The paper investigates the trends of Italian on the web used by pre-adolescents and adolescents under eighteen, considering their linguistic interactions in the comments section of some YouTube channels
