Unraveling the nature of coherent beatings in chlorosomes.

Coherent two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy at 80 K was used to study chlorosomes isolated from green sulfur bacterium Chlorobaculum tepidum. Two distinct processes in the evolution of the 2D spectrum are observed. The first being exciton diffusion, seen in the change of the spectral shape occurring on a 100-fs timescale, and the second being vibrational coherences, realized through coherent beatings with frequencies of 91 and 145 cm(-1) that are dephased during the first 1.2 ps. The distribution of the oscillation amplitude in the 2D spectra is independent of the evolution of the 2D spectral shape. This implies that the diffusion energy transfer process does not transfer coherences within the chlorosome. Remarkably, the oscillatory pattern observed in the negative regions of the 2D spectrum (dominated by the excited state absorption) is a mirror image of the oscillations found in the positive part (originating from the stimulated emission and ground state bleach). This observation is surprising since it is expected that coherences in the electronic ground and excited states are generated with the same probability and the latter dephase faster in the presence of fast diffusion. Moreover, the relative amplitude of coherent beatings is rather high compared to non-oscillatory signal despite the reported low values of the Huang-Rhys factors. The origin of these effects is discussed in terms of the vibronic and Herzberg-Teller couplings

    Accounting System

    No full text
The aim of the work is to design and implement a basic interface of a web information system for the accounting management that corresponds to the Czech legislation. The project contains a brief introduction to the subject of accounting and the terms of proper evidence of receipts and expenditures, which are significant for basic income-tax computing. The results of the work are the requirements analysis, the system design considering the user options and needs and the description of the system implementation process with reference to used technology. In addition, the work includes a description and comparison of four commercial products from the user point of view, which became an initial point for requirements determination

The future of volunteering in extreme weather events: Critical reflections on key challenges and opportunities for climate resilience

    Get PDF
Volunteers are playing a significant role in interacting with ongoing societal shocks and stresses, such as mobilising resources and supporting responses to extreme weather events. Their actions contribute to the pursuit of local climate resilience by shaping the local level and influencing socio-ecological systems. Therefore, academics, communities, practitioners and policymakers responsible for understanding, encouraging, developing and sustaining volunteering activity can benefit from critical reflections on volunteering in extreme weather events in order to support ongoing research initiatives, future research and policy agendas, and the development of funding strategies and public programs for climate resilience. This Policy Forum paper critically reflects on the current status of volunteering for extreme weather events and local climate resilience, using experiences from flood risk management, to identify key challenges and opportunities for the future. It builds on the ESRC CASCADE-NET project in discussing both academic puzzles and practical challenges faced in volunteering for local climate resilience in an attempt to bridge gaps and foster further debates between theory and practice. These insights are drawn from a series of dialogic exchanges that reflect the authors’ diverse perspectives and lived experiences of volunteering that emerge in their research and practice in England, the Czech Republic, and The Netherlands. We identify and share ten urgent challenges, followed by discussion of four cross-cutting themes that exist: volunteers as a renewable energy source, stakeholder narratives of volunteering, learning from other contexts, and transformative resilience. In exploring the futures of volunteering, this Policy Forum challenges existing thought by proposing the need to move beyond traditional narratives of ‘the volunteer’ and ‘volunteering’ to a more inclusive and nuanced understanding. Through this, we believe that volunteering can play an essential role in pursuing a just transition, with volunteers being able to challenge the status quo to contribute to transformative climate resilience practice and policy

Multi-View Proxemics: Distance and Position Sensitive Interaction

    No full text
We present work at a previously unexplored intersection of two research areas: proxemic interaction and multi-view display technologies. Multi-view proxemic systems concurrently deliver distinct views from a single display to different viewers depending on a combination of their angle to the display and their distance from it. In this paper we demonstrate the capability to design such an interactive system using only commodity hardware and software. We describe two systems and present results of two user studies with 18 participants. The studies are based on two real-world scenarios of a departure board and a video player (with subtitles). Our results show that multi-view proxemic systems are accurate and that users find them useful and would use them if they were available. We also discuss some of the design and technological implications of our work

Subtle Gaze-Dependent Techniques for Visualising Display Changes in Multi-Display Environments

    No full text
This paper explores techniques for visualising display changes in multi-display environments. We present four subtle gaze-dependent techniques for visualising change on unattended displays called FreezeFrame, PixMap, WindowMap and Aura. To enable the techniques to be directly deployed to workstations, we also present a system that automatically identifies the user’s eyes using computer vision and a set of web cameras mounted on the displays. An evaluation confirms this system can detect which display the user is attending to with high accuracy. We studied the efficacy of the visualisation techniques in a five-day case study with a working professional. This individual used our system eight hours per day for five consecutive days. The results of the study show that the participant found the system and the techniques useful, subtle, calm and non-intrusive. We conclude by discussing the challenges in evaluating intelligent subtle interaction techniques using traditional experimental paradigms.
