The secret of dry hopped beers – review

    Get PDF
Dry hopped beers gain their characteristic flavour from hop products purposely added during the cold stage of production. Although the production of these beers has not so broad a tradition in the Czech Republic as for instant in Great Britain or the United States, their popularity increases every year. This study provides a complete set of theoretical and practical information about the production of dry hopped beers. The relevant sensory active compounds of hops creating the characteristic beer aroma and factors influencing their transfer into beer are introduced. The last part of the study deals with some important risk factors which must be considered during the production of dry hopped beers

Classification of Czech Hops According to their Contents of Prenylflavonoids

The prenylated flavonoids are hop components with the most beneficial health effects. Information about their content and the dynamics of their decrease during hops processing is necessary for the production of beer with an increased content of these substances. This study deals with the long-term monitoring of the prenylflavonoids and α-bitter acids contents and their ratios in the whole spectrum of domestic hop varieties as well as with changes in these parameters during storage and hop processing. It was confirmed that the newly cultivated Agnus and Vital varieties are the varieties with the highest contents of prenylated flavonoids. As a result, the Vital variety is particularly useful in non-brewing applications. Based on the monitoring of the decrease in the levels of these components during hop processing it was recognised that development of new gentler methods, particularly for the hop drying would be necessary. These methods should minimize the risk of thermal and oxidative degradation

Alternative Methods for Shelf Life Extension of Unfi ltered Beers from Microbreweries

    Get PDF
At present, a broad range of unfi ltered beers is produced mainly by microbreweries. So far, however, no suitable method exists for ensuring extended shelf life at the industrial scale without damaging the taste. The most widespread method – pasteurization also kills brewery yeasts and, has a thermal impact on beer. This review describes the premises for ensuring effective microbial stabilization that depends particularly on proper sanitization practices. Alternative methods – the high hydrostatic in addition, processing and the pulsed electric fi elds processing have a minimal effect on the beer quality. These techniques were already tested under laboratory conditions and have potential for use at the industrial scale. This article describes these methods in detail

Plasma cell-free DNA methylation analysis for ovarian cancer detection: Analysis of samples from a case-control study and an ovarian cancer screening tria

Analysis of cell-free DNA methylation (cfDNAme), alone or combined with CA125, could help to detect ovarian cancers earlier and may reduce mortality. We assessed cfDNAme in regions of ZNF154, C2CD4D and WNT6 via targeted bisulfite sequencing in diagnostic and early detection (preceding diagnosis) settings. Diagnostic samples were obtained via prospective blood collection in cell-free DNA tubes in a convenience series of patients with a pelvic mass. Early detection samples were matched case-control samples derived from the UK Familial Ovarian Cancer Screening Study (UKFOCSS). In the diagnostic set (ncases  = 27, ncontrols  = 41), the specificity of cfDNAme was 97.6% (95% CI: 87.1%-99.9%). High-risk cancers were detected with a sensitivity of 80% (56.3%-94.3%). Combination of cfDNAme and CA125 resulted in a sensitivity of 94.4% (72.7%-99.9%) for high-risk cancers. Despite technical issues in the early detection set (ncases  = 29, ncontrols  = 29), the specificity of cfDNAme was 100% (88.1%-100.0%). We detected 27.3% (6.0%-61.0%) of high-risk cases with relatively lower genomic DNA (gDNA) contamination. The sensitivity rose to 33.3% (7.5%-70.1%) in samples taken <1 year before diagnosis. We detected ovarian cancer in several patients up to 1 year before diagnosis despite technical limitations associated with archival samples (UKFOCSS). Combined cfDNAme and CA125 assessment may improve ovarian cancer screening in high-risk populations, but future large-scale prospective studies will be required to validate current findings

ObhájenoThe aim of this work is to design a modification of the moment autotuner for systems with one dominant time constant to reduce significantly the time of the identification experiment. The proposed modification is tested on a set of a priori permissible systems. Furthermore, we define the area of suitable usage of this method. The dependence of the quality of identification on the size of the dominant time constant and its influence on the design of PI and PID controllers is analysed. In addition we discuss possibilities of real-time decision-making for using the results provided by this method

Introduction Axillary dissection has little diagnostic and therapeutic benefit in the node-positive breast cancer patients in whom axillary disease has been completely eradicated after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (ypN0). We sought to assess the efficacy of an algorithm used for the identification of the ypN0 patients consisting of intraoperative evaluation of sentinel and tattooed (initially positive) lymph nodes. Methods Included were T1 and T2 breast cancer patients with one to three positive axillary lymph nodes marked with carbon who were referred for neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by a surgery. Axillary dissection was performed only in the patients with residual axillary disease after neoadjuvant chemotherapy on ultrasound or with metastases described in the sentinel or tattooed lymph nodes either intraoperatively or in the final histology. Results Out of 62 included initially node-positive patients, 15 (24%) were spared axillary dissection. The detection rate of tattooed lymph node after neoadjuvant chemotherapy was 81%. The ypN0 patients were identified with 91% sensitivity and 38% specificity using ultrasound and intraoperative assessment of both sentinel and tattooed lymph node according to the final histology. Discussion/Conclusion Lymph node marking with carbon dye is a useful and..

Hop Phytochemicals and Their Potential Role in Metabolic Syndrome Prevention and Therapy

    No full text
Historically, hop cones (Humulus lupulus) have been used since ancient times as a remedy for many ailments and, as a source of polyphenols and bitter acids, is very effective in the treatment of metabolic syndrome (MS). Hop flavonoids, particularly xanthohumol (XN), are substances with hypoglycemic, antihyperlipidemic, and antiobesity activities. Iso-α-acids (IAA) and matured hop bitter acids (MHBA) improve health by influencing lipid metabolism, glucose tolerance, and body weight. The modulatory effect of IAA and MHBA on lipid metabolism may also be responsible for a loss in body weight. These results suggest promising applications for IAA, MHBA, and XN in humans, particularly in the prevention of diet-induced obesity and diabetes
