A study of the merits of filmstrip-oriented reading instruction as opposed to teacher-developed instruction at the secondary level

Educators have been exhorted to experiment with different techniques to discover ways of teaching reading more effectively and have been censured for their negligence in not making greater use of visual media. Yet, at the same time, teachers have been warned to wait and see , and not to accept exaggerated claims because the effectiveness of mechanical aids in teaching reading is still considered controversial by many authorities. The aim of this experimental study was to determine the value of direct teaching of reading skills through a commercially prepared filmstrip program, Tachist-O-Filmstrips , as opposed to a teacher-developed instructional program at the secondary level. Specific objectives centered about the comparative values of the two programs in their effects on: 1. General reading achievement 2. Vocabulary growth - both recognition and meaning 3. Comprehension accuracy 4. Rate of reading 5. Interest in reading

Extent of Parental School Involvement for Improved Student Performance in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State

Academic achievement of students does not depend only on school, environmental factors and teacher characteristics, but also on the level of home involvement. This study therefore sought to establish the extent of parental school involvement for students’ improved academic achievement in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The descriptive survey design was used for this study, with six (6) research questions guiding the study. The population for the study comprised 417 public secondary school teachers from which a sample of 125 teachers using simple random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a researcher designed, structured questionnaire which was duly validated by experts in educational management and measurement and evaluation. The questionnaire was tested for reliability using test-retest method. The tool for correlation was the Pearson Product Moment Correlation and this yielded a co-efficient of 0.82. Data collected was analysed using mean and standard deviation statistics to answer the 6 research questions while ANOVA with Friedman’s Test was used to test for significant difference in the six indices of parental involvement. The findings show among others that teachers perceive that parents in Awka South Local Government Area effectively communicate with school and coach their children for improved academic achievement to a moderate extent. There was no significant difference in the teacher’s perception of parental involvement based on the six indices of involvement. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended among others, that parents and the school use social media and other devices to communicate more effectively with the school for improved students’ academic performance

Coherent and robust high-fidelity generation of a biexciton in a quantum dot by rapid adiabatic passage

    Get PDF
A biexciton in a semiconductor quantum dot is a source of polarization-entangled photons with high potential for implementation in scalable systems. Several approaches for non-resonant, resonant and quasi-resonant biexciton preparation exist, but all have their own disadvantages, for instance low fidelity, timing jitter, incoherence or sensitivity to experimental parameters. We demonstrate a coherent and robust technique to generate a biexciton in an InGaAs quantum dot with a fidelity close to one. The main concept is the application of rapid adiabatic passage to the ground state-exciton-biexciton system. We reinforce our experimental results with simulations which include a microscopic coupling to phonons.Comment: Main manuscript 5 pages and 4 figures, Supplementary Information 5 pages and 3 figures, accepted as a Rapid Communication in PRB. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1701.0130

Drama in Dialogic Read Alouds: Promoting Access and Opportunity for Emergent Bilinguals

In this report, we explore the potential for drama pedagogy in the classroom to support the engagement and growth of emergent bilingual students in language and literacy. We are focused on the use of drama to promote dialogic interactions during teacher read alouds. This study was conducted as a collaborative, action research investigation involving classroom teachers and university-based researchers. Our goals focused on three areas. First, we were interested in the impact of the drama intervention on comprehension. Second, we were interested in the responses of students to drama in read alouds with attention to differences in responses related to gender, grade level, skill level, and English Language Learner (school labeled) status. Third, we were interested in the students’ explanations for why (or why not) drama enhanced their engagement with the stories read. The findings suggest the power of incorporating drama to promote participation and dialogic interactions in support of language learnin
