    These proceedings contain the papers of the Third International Workshop on Recent Trends in News Informa-tion Retrieval (NewsIR\u201919) held in conjunction with the ACM SIGIR 2019 conference in Paris, France, on the25thof July 2019. Ten full papers and two short papers (one position paper and one demo paper) were selectedby the programme committee from a total of 21 submissions. Each submitted paper was reviewed by at leastthree members of an international programme committee. In addition to the selected papers, the workshopfeatures one keynote and one invited talk.     Pasos Hacia La Salud: a randomized controlled trial of an internet-delivered physical activity intervention for Latinas.

    BackgroundInternet access has grown markedly in Latinos during the past decade. However, there have been no Internet-based physical activity interventions designed for Latinos, despite large disparities in lifestyle-related conditions, such as obesity and diabetes, particularly in Latina women. The current study tested the efficacy of a 6-month culturally adapted, individually tailored, Spanish-language Internet-based physical activity intervention.MethodsInactive Latinas (N = 205) were randomly assigned to the Tailored Physical Activity Internet Intervention or the Wellness Contact Control Internet Group. Participants in both groups received emails on a tapered schedule over 6 months to alert them to new content on the website. The primary outcome was minutes/week of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) at 6 months as measured by the 7-Day Physical Activity Recall; activity was also measured by accelerometers. Data were collected between 2011 and 2014 and analyzed in 2015 at the University of California, San Diego.ResultsIncreases in minutes/week of MVPA were significantly greater in the Intervention Group compared to the Control Group (mean difference = 50.00, SE = 9.5, p < 0.01). Increases in objectively measured MVPA were also significantly larger in the Intervention Group (mean differences = 31.0, SE = 10.7, p < .01). The Intervention Group was also significantly more likely to meet national physical activity guidelines at 6 months (OR = 3.12, 95% CI 1.46-6.66, p < .05).ConclusionFindings from the current study suggest that this Internet-delivered individually tailored intervention successfully increased MVPA in Latinas compared to a Wellness Contact Control Internet Group.Trial registrationNCT01834287

    Computational Controversy

    Climate change, vaccination, abortion, Trump: Many topics are surrounded by fierce controversies. The nature of such heated debates and their elements have been studied extensively in the social science literature. More recently, various computational approaches to controversy analysis have appeared, using new data sources such as Wikipedia, which help us now better understand these phenomena. However, compared to what social sciences have discovered about such debates, the existing computational approaches mostly focus on just a few of the many important aspects around the concept of controversies. In order to link the two strands, we provide and evaluate here a controversy model that is both, rooted in the findings of the social science literature and at the same time strongly linked to computational methods.     Implementation-effectiveness trial of an ecological intervention for physical activity in ethnically diverse low income senior centers.

    BackgroundAs the US population ages, there is an increasing need for evidence based, peer-led physical activity programs, particularly in ethnically diverse, low income senior centers where access is limited.Methods/designThe Peer Empowerment Program 4 Physical Activity' (PEP4PA) is a hybrid Type II implementation-effectiveness trial that is a peer-led physical activity (PA) intervention based on the ecological model of behavior change. The initial phase is a cluster randomized control trial randomized to either a peer-led PA intervention or usual center programming. After 18 months, the intervention sites are further randomized to continued support or no support for another 6 months. This study will be conducted at twelve senior centers in San Diego County in low income, diverse communities. In the intervention sites, 24 peer health coaches and 408 adults, aged 50 years and older, are invited to participate. Peer health coaches receive training and support and utilize a tablet computer for delivery and tracking. There are several levels of intervention. Individual components include pedometers, step goals, counseling, and feedback charts. Interpersonal components include group walks, group sharing and health tips, and monthly celebrations. Community components include review of PA resources, walkability audit, sustainability plan, and streetscape improvements. The primary outcome of interest is intensity and location of PA minutes per day, measured every 6 months by wrist and hip accelerometers and GPS devices. Secondary outcomes include blood pressure, physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning. Implementation measures include appropriateness & acceptability (perceived and actual fit), adoption & penetration (reach), fidelity (quantity & quality of intervention delivered), acceptability (satisfaction), costs, and sustainability.DiscussionUsing a peer led implementation strategy to deliver a multi-level community based PA program can enhance program adoption, implementation, and sustainment.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov, USA ( NCT02405325 ).     De novo identification of universal cell mechanics regulators

    Mechanical proprieties determine many cellular functions, such as cell fate specification, migration, or circulation through vasculature. Identifying factors governing cell mechanical phenotype is therefore a subject of great interest. Here we present a mechanomics approach for establishing links between mechanical phenotype changes and the genes involved in driving them. We employ a machine learning-based discriminative network analysis method termed PC-corr to associate cell mechanical states, measured by real-time deformability cytometry (RT-DC), with large-scale transcriptome datasets ranging from stem cell development to cancer progression, and originating from different murine and human tissues. By intersecting the discriminative networks inferred from two selected datasets, we identify a conserved module of five genes with putative roles in the regulation of cell mechanics. We validate the power of the individual genes to discriminate between soft and stiff cell states in silico, and demonstrate experimentally that the top scoring gene, CAV1, changes the mechanical phenotype of cells when silenced or overexpressed. The data-driven approach presented here has the power of de novo identification of genes involved in cell mechanics regulation and paves the way towards engineering cell mechanical properties on demand to explore their impact on physiological and pathological cell functions

    Thermal AdS(3), BTZ and competing winding modes condensation

    We study the thermal physics of AdS(3) and the BTZ black hole when embedded in String theory. The exact calculation of the Hagedorn temperature in TAdS(3) is reinterpreted as the appearance of a winding tachyon both in AdS(3) and BTZ. We construct a dual framework for analyzing the phases of the system. In this dual framework, tachyon condensation and geometric capping appear on the same footing, bridging the usual gap of connecting tachyon condensation to modifications of geometry. This allows us to construct in a natural way a candidate for the unstable phase, analogous to a small black hole in higher dimensions. Additional peculiar effects associated with the Hagedorn temperature and the Hawking-Page transition, some to do with the asymptotic structure of AdS(3) and some with strong curvature effects, are analyzed and explained.Comment: 40 pages, 5 figures, JHEP3 format. v2: added references, minor corrections and clarification

    Introducción. La adolescencia incluye la búsqueda y adquisición de una identidad o la experimentación de nuevas sensaciones, incluyendo el consumo de drogas legales, como el alcohol y el tabaco. Objetivos. El objetivo principal de este estudio fue analizar si el consumo de alcohol y tabaco está relacionado con variables psicoeducativas (e.g., metas académicas, autoconcepto escolar y rendimiento académico). Método. Se usó un muestreo aleatorio de 1 197 alumnos/as pertenecientes a nueve centros escolares en Portugal. Resultados. Los resultados del presente estudio encontraron que las personas consumidoras de tabaco y alcohol presentan resultados significativamente más bajos en las variables psicoeducativas, en comparación con las personas no consumidoras. Cabe destacar que en el autoconcepto verbal no se encontraron diferencias entre personas consumidoras y no consumidoras en relación tanto con el alcohol como el tabaco. Conclusiones. Por tanto, es posible concluir que existe una relación entre el consumo de tabaco y alcohol y las variables psicoeducativas examinadas en este estudio en una muestra de adolescentes portugueses.Introduction. The main objective of this study was to analyze whether alcohol and tobacco use is related to psychoeducational variables (e.g., school goals, academic self-concept, and school performance). Method. A random sampling of 1 197 students selected from nine schools in Portugal was used. Results. The results of the present study found that tobacco and alcohol users had significantly lower scores on psychoeducational variables compared to non-users. It should be noted that in verbal self-concept no differences were found between users and non-users in relation to both alcohol and tobacco. Conclusions. For all these reasons, it can be established that there is a relationship between tobacco and alcohol consumption and the psychoeducational variables examined in this study of Portuguese adolescents
