    Get PDF

Effectiveness of Mechanical Horse-Riding Simulators on Postural Balance in Neurological Rehabilitation: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Get PDF
Mechanical horse-riding simulators consist of a device that mimics the movement of a real horse, generating between 50 and 100 three-dimensional physical movements (forward and back, left and right, up and down). The main objective of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of mechanical horse-riding simulators to improve postural balance in subjects with neurological disorders. The search was conducted during January-March 2019 in PubMed, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), Cochrane, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Scopus. The methodological quality of the studies was evaluated through the PEDro scale. A total of seven articles were included in this systematic review, of which four contributed information to the meta-analysis. Statistical analysis showed favorable results for balance in stroke patients, measured by the Berg Balance Scale (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 3.24; 95%; confidence interval (CI): 1.66-4.83). Not conclusive results were found in sitting postural balance, measured using the Gross Motor Function Measure-66 (GMFM-66) Sitting Dimension, in patients with cerebral palsy. Most studies have shown beneficial effects on postural balance compared with conventional physical therapy. However, due to the limited number of articles and their low methodological quality, no solid conclusions can be drawn about the effectiveness of this therapy

Management Behaviour on Dividend Payouts: An Overview of the Spanish and British Quoted Corporations

    Get PDF
This paper describes the management behaviour of Spanish and British quoted corporations on setting company dividend payouts. To do so, the author surveys CFOs in the two countries to capture their views about dividend policy relevancy; the factors that drive their dividend decisions and the determinants of their dividend payouts. The findings show that managers stress the importance of dividend policy in the firm's value and give the strongest support to the signalling and 'bird-in-the-hand' explanations. They provide however, very little support for the Agency and Tax Issues. Whereas managers in the UK show the highest level of uncertainty in the Clientele effect, Spanish respondents agree with it. The paper does not capture the Behavioural approach. Although in general terms respondents show similar patterns of behaviour, the author finds important differences in aspects of corporate governance and legal tax systems that help to determine whether such behaviour fits into the country's traits and the finance literature

Evolution of fractality in space plasmas of interest to geomagnetic activity

    Get PDF
We studied the temporal evolution of fractality for geomagnetic activity, by calculating fractal dimensions from the Dst data and from a magnetohydrodynamic shell model for turbulent magnetized plasma, which may be a useful model to study geomagnetic activity under solar wind forcing. We show that the shell model is able to reproduce the relationship between the fractal dimension and the occurrence of dissipative events, but only in a certain region of viscosity and resistivity values. We also present preliminary results of the application of these ideas to the study of the magnetic field time series in the solar wind during magnetic clouds, which suggest that it is possible, by means of the fractal dimension, to characterize the complexity of the magnetic cloud structure.Peer reviewe

Recurrent Acute Pancreatitis in a Patient with Type IIb hyperlipoproteinemia: A Case Report and Review of the Literature in Korea

    Get PDF
Hyperlipidemia is a rare cause of pancreatitis. It has been believed that free fatty acids released from hydrolyzed serum chylomicrons or triglycerides and chylomicrons induce hyperlipidemic pancreatitis by damaging acinar cells and capillaries. Type I, IV or V hyperlipidemic (Fredrickson's classification) pancreatitides have distinctive features of increased and heightened serum chylomicron and triglyceride levels. In contrast, type IIb hyperlipidemia usually doesn't have increased chylomicrons. It is a dominant inherited genetic disorder and doesn't manifest the subjective symptom before combining vascular complications such as coronary artery disease. Only a few cases of type IIb hyperlipidemic pancreatitis have been reported. We experienced a male patient with recurrent hyperlipidemic pancreatitis combined with type IIb hyperlipidemia. We present the case report and a review of the literature of hyperlipidemic pancreatitis, especially cases in Korea

Qualitative Assessment of the Symptoms and Impact of Pancreatic Exocrine Insufficiency (PEI) to Inform the Development of a Patient-Reported Outcome (PRO) Instrument

    Get PDF
Background: Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) affects patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP) and cystic fibrosis (CF) who produce insufficient digestive pancreatic enzymes. Common symptoms include steatorrhoea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Objective: The objective of the study was to develop and test the content validity of a patient-reported outcome (PRO) instrument assessing PEI symptoms and their impact on health-related quality of life. Methods: Instrument development was supported by a literature review, expert physician interviews (n = 10: Germany 4, UK 3, France 3), and exploratory, qualitative, concept-elicitation interviews with patients with CF and CP with PEI (n = 61: UK 29, Germany 18, France 14) and expert physicians (n = 10). Cognitive debriefing of the draft instrument was then performed with patients with PEI (n = 37: UK 24, Germany 8, France 5), and feasibility was assessed with physicians (n = 3). For all interviews, verbatim transcripts were qualitatively analysed using thematic analysis methods and Atlas.ti computerized qualitative software. All themes were data driven rather than a priori. Results: Patient interviews elicited symptoms and impacts not reported in the literature. Six symptom concepts emerged: pain, bloating, bowel symptoms, nausea/vomiting, eating problems, and tiredness/fatigue. Six impact domains were also identified. A 45-item instrument was developed in English, French, and German for testing in cognitive debriefing patient interviews. Following cognitive debriefing, 18 items were deleted. Conclusion: Rigorous qualitative patient research and expert clinical input supported development of a PEI-specific PRO with the potential to aid management and monitoring of unmet needs among patients with PEI. The next step is to perform psychometric evaluation of the resulting instrument.</p
