Prompt photon yield and v2v_2 coefficient from gluon fusion induced by magnetic field in heavy-ion collision

We compute the production of prompt photons and the v2v_2 harmonic coefficient in relativistic heavy-ion collisions induced by gluon fusion in the presence of an intense magnetic field, during the early stages of the reaction. The calculations take into account several parameters which are relevant to the description of the experimental transverse momentum distribution, and elliptic flow for RHIC and LHC energies. The main imput is the strength of the magnetic field which varies in magnitude from 1 to 3 times the pion mass squared, and allows the gluon fusion that otherwise is forbidden in the absence of the field. The high gluon occupation number and the value of the saturation scale also play an important role in our calculation, as well as a flow velocity and geometrical factors. Our results support the idea that the origin of at least some of the photon excess observed in heavy-ion experiments may arise from magnetic field induced processes, and gives a good description of the experimental data.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, conference paper from ISMD 201

Profitability of the Mediterranean and NE Atlantic new target sea cucumber species: some repercussions for their fisheries management

    Get PDF
The term profitability can be understood as the ratio in percentage between fresh weight of animals and the dry weight of the obtained beche-de-mer depending on the body wall thickness of sea cucumbers and water content. Specimens decrease their weight and length considerably, when they are processed. However, scarce information about profitability of commercial sea cucumber from Mediterranean and NE Atlantic has been published until now. In this study, we focused on Holothuria tubulosa, Holothuria polii, Holothuria mammata and Holothuria arguinensis. For most of the species considered, a good lineal regression was found between eviscerated length (EL) vs eviscerated weight (EW), and EW vs dried weight (DW)however, H. arguinensis showed a high dispersal of data and low regression coefficients. The highest profitability (20.57 % +/- 4.40) was registered on H. arguinensis and the second one (15.36 % +/- 2.68) on H. polii. H. mammata and H. tubulosa showed lower profitability (11.95 % +/- 0.54 and 10.75 % +/- 0.55, respectively). Significant differences were found between profitability values of the studied species. Some implications for fisheries management were deduced from the relationships between profitability vs EW.CUMARSUR project - Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia [PTDC/MAR-BIO/5948/2014]HOLREMAR project - Sayanes Mar S.L.FCTPortuguese Foundation for Science and Technology [IF/00998/2014, CCMAR/BI/0007/2015

Co oxidation: effect of Ce and Au addition on MnOx catalysts

    Get PDF
The effect of cerium and/or gold addition to a manganese oxide which was greatly active in CO oxidation was studied. The catalysts obtained by this way were characterized by N2 adsorption, XRF, XRD and TPR, and their catalytic activity was measured in the CO oxidation reaction. The pure MnOx catalyst was active in the CO oxidation but the addition of 5 wt % cerium decreased their catalytic activity. Adding 2 wt % gold improved the activity of MnOx and Ce/MnOx and caused a slight decrease of the catalyst specific area and of the average oxidation state of manganese in catalysts, which was found between 3.3 and 3.6. The order of activity found on the basis of T50 for the four catalysts was: Au/MnOx > Au/Ce/MnOx > MnOx > Ce/MnOx, with T50 of 89, 95, 99 and 139 °C, respectively. The solids Au/MnOx and Au/Ce/MnOx presented a T10 of 30 and 49 °C, indicating that gold favored the conversion at room temperature. The effect of water vapor on the reaction was also analyzed, finding a decrease in the catalytic activity of all catalysts, due to the blocking of active sites in the catalyst surface.

Using machine learning and information visualisation for discovering latent topics in Twitter news

We propose a method to discover latent topics and visualise large collections of tweets for easy identification and interpretation of topics, and exemplify its use with tweets from a Colombian mass media giant in the period 2014--2019. The latent topic analysis is performed in two ways: with the training of a Latent Dirichlet Allocation model, and with the combination of the FastText unsupervised model to represent tweets as vectors and the implementation of K-means clustering to group tweets into topics. Using a classification task, we found that people respond differently according to the various news topics. The classification tasks consists of the following: given a reply to a news tweet, we train a supervised algorithm to predict the topic of the news tweet solely from the reply. Furthermore, we show how the Colombian peace treaty has had a profound impact on the Colombian society, as it is the topic in which most people engage to show their opinions.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, to be presented at SmartTech-IC 201

Struma Ovarii associated with Pseudo-Meigs Syndrome and elevated serum Ca 125: Case report and literature review

    Get PDF
Struma Ovarii is a highly specialized monodermal teratoma in which the major component is thyroid tissue. Its relationship with Pseudo Meigs syndrome, hyperthyroidism and elevation of Ca 125 is a rare condition; this could mimic malignancy. Ultrasound and axial tomography may be useful in diagnosis; but histopathological criteria play a very important role in the definitive diagnosis. Our objective is to present a case report of Struma ovarii, ascites, pleural effusion (pseudo meigs syndrome), elevation of Ca 125, hyperthyroidism, and review the published literature in relation to epidemiology and diagnostic characteristics

Conductance control for electromagnetic-compatible induction heating appliances

    Get PDF
The design requirements of induction hobs are strongly restricted by efficiency, heating performance, cost, the generation of acoustic noise, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). These two latter topics, cost and EMC, motivated the research presented in this article. The different levels at which the equivalent load of the induction hob is excited generate a variation of the equivalent impedance throughout the grid period even if all the other parameters are kept constant. This can cause a nonsinusoidal consumption of the grid current which goes against the compliance with EMC standards. This article proposes an online controller which controls the conductance seen by the inverter by only modifying the switching frequency throughout the bus period. This greatly reduces the harmonic distortion of the grid current, no matter what is the type of the vessel used. Moreover, it requires neither power-factor correction rectifiers nor any additional circuitry and it has a faster dynamic response with respect to the traditional solutions used in induction hobs due to its higher bandwidth
