Nonlinear physics of electrical wave propagation in the heart: a review

The beating of the heart is a synchronized contraction of muscle cells (myocytes) that are triggered by a periodic sequence of electrical waves (action potentials) originating in the sino-atrial node and propagating over the atria and the ventricles. Cardiac arrhythmias like atrial and ventricular fibrillation (AF,VF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT) are caused by disruptions and instabilities of these electrical excitations, that lead to the emergence of rotating waves (VT) and turbulent wave patterns (AF,VF). Numerous simulation and experimental studies during the last 20 years have addressed these topics. In this review we focus on the nonlinear dynamics of wave propagation in the heart with an emphasis on the theory of pulses, spirals and scroll waves and their instabilities in excitable media and their application to cardiac modeling. After an introduction into electrophysiological models for action potential propagation, the modeling and analysis of spatiotemporal alternans, spiral and scroll meandering, spiral breakup and scroll wave instabilities like negative line tension and sproing are reviewed in depth and discussed with emphasis on their impact in cardiac arrhythmias.Peer ReviewedPreprin

Violencia escolar : Plan Renove da convivencia na comunidade autónoma galega

[Resumen] O proceso de desenvolvemento e cambios sociais que se viven na sociedade actual, e que afectan á infancia e á mocidade, lévannos a seguir esbozando actuacións de mellora da convivencia nos centros educativos que favorezan a situación de ensinanza-aprendizaxe nos mesmos. Pártese dunha reflexión sobre este fenómeno nun marco máis amplo da convivencia escolar, para describir, a continuación as medidas que a Comunidade Autónoma Galega pon en marcha coa creación do Observatorio Galego de Convivencia Escolar, como un órgano con capacidade de analizar, recoller e facer propostas de actuación para favorecer e mellorar as relacións nos centros escolares. Remata o artigo con medidas ou propostas para apoiar e axudar á comunidade educativa (pais/nais-profesorado- alumnado) nesta dificil tarefa[Abstract] The process of development and social changes lived at present, that concern the infancy and the youth, lead us to designing performances that improve the living together in the educational centers in favor of the situations of education - learning. We begin with a reflection on this phenomenon in a more wide frame of the school living together. Later we describe the measurements that the Autonomous Galician Community starts with the recent creation of the Galician Observatory of the School Living together. It is a question of an organ with capacity to analyze, to gather and do offers of performance to favor and to improve the living together in the educational centers. Finally, measurements or offers are established to rest to the educational community (parents / mother, professorship, student body) on this difficult task

Dilemas e desafios na educaçâo primária: implicaçôes na atençâo à diversidade

[Resumen] En este artículo se efectua una revisión de la situación actual en la que se encuentra el tra- tamiento de la diversidad en educación prima- ria en la Comunidad Autónoma de Galicia y sus posibles implicaciones para la intervención educativa. La principal finalidad de este artícu- lo es la de conocer los cambios legislativos, curriculares y organizativos que se están reali- zando en esta etapa y las consecuencias que estos ocasionan al sistema educativo, asi como en que medida afectan a la atención del alum- nado diverso presente en las aulas. Se analizan también, las posibles dificultades de coordina- ción entre las distintas etapas: educación infan- til-educación primaria- educación secundaria.[Abstract] In this article we make a review of the current situation in the treatment of the diversity in Primary Education in the Autonomous Community of Galicia and its possible implications for the educational intervention. ¿Hacia dónde va el acogimiento residencial?

Los centros de menores, tanto ayer como hoy, han cumplido con una labor de sustitución familiar, con resultados y valoración en ocasiones muy controvertidos, Recientemente se ha producido en España un acalorado debate sobre la conveniencia, o no, de continuar con los centros de acogimiento residencial, siendo mayoritariamente partidarios, los expertos consultados, de su desaparición. Los resultados de esta investigación, y de otras en la misma línea, nos muestran un horizonte menos negativo del acogimiento residencial y con capacidad de ofrecer respuestas positivas para un sector concreto de población infanto-juvenil necesitada de protección.The centers of youth and children have fulfilling a work in the family situation, with very controversial outputs and assessments. Recently, an intense debate is taken place about the convenience or not in continuing with the residential centers in Spain. The experts consulted in this matter are exposing the need to disappear these centers. However, the results of this research, coinciding with other research works in the same field, show a less negative horizon in residential centers, where comes up their ability to offer positive responses to the children and youth who need this protection

Advantages of using virtual learning environments from the perspective of students and families

Introducción: Este estudio investigó los efectos del diseño de entornos personales de aprendizaje en la superación de la desmotivación discente. Método: Con la finalidad de describir las ventajas en la utilización de los entornos personales de aprendizaje de los participantes respecto a sus propias vivencias de aprendizaje, se utiliza una metodología de estudio de caso evaluativo de orientación etnográfica y como técnica el análisis de contenido de la información recogida de los grupos de discusión con el profesorado, alumnado y padres implicados en la experiencia. Resultados: La utilización de los entornos personales de aprendizaje tiene ventajas para la motivación y el rendimiento docente del alumnado pero se evidencian algunas problemáticas en la implementación del proceso de innovación. Conclusiones: Señalan que es un enfoque pedagógico potencialmente prometedor para integrar tanto el aprendizaje formal e informal utilizando los medios sociales y el apoyo al aprendizaje autorregulado de los estudiantes y ponen de relieve su facilidad de uso.Introduction: This study investigated the effects that the design of personal learning environments has in overcoming student´s lack of motivation. Method: The methodology used was the case study with an ethnographic orientation approach. This methodology allowed to describe the advantages of using the participants personal learning environments regarding their own learning experiences. The technique employed to conduct the study was the analysis of the content of the information that had been collected in group discussion exercises made with teachers, students and parents who got involved in the experience. Results: Using personal learning environments has advantages for student’s motivation and student´s performance. However, there are some evident problems with the implementation of the innovation process. Conclusions: This pedagogical approach represents promising advances in the integration of both formal and informal learning. Furthermore, the use of social media and the support of self-regulated learning highlight the usability of the approach.peerReviewe
