[ENG] An approach to the culture of leisure in Cartagena in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; presents us with a representative of the plural, diverse and clearly stratified society then existing sociological diverse cultures. In this work a modeling framework and a solution approach have been presented for a multi-period stochastic mixed 0–1 problem arising in tactical supply chain planning (TSCP). A multistage scenario tree based scheme is used to represent the parameters’ uncertainty and develop the related Deterministic Equivalent Model. A cost risk reduction is performed by using a new time-consistent risk averse measure. Given the dimensions of this problem in real-life applications, a decomposition approach is proposed. It is based on stochastic dynamic programming (SDP). The computational experience is twofold, a compar- ison is performed between the plain use of a current state-of-the-art mixed integer optimization solver and the proposed SDP decomposition approach considering the risk neutral version of the model as the subject for the benchmarking. The add-value of the new risk averse strategy is confirmed by the compu- tational results that are obtained using SDP for both versions of the TSCP model, namely, risk neutral and risk averse. The authors would like to thank to the two anonymous review- ers for their help on clarifying some concepts presented in the manuscript and strongly improving its presentatio

Online games for the teaching of mathematics

In this article we present a didactic experience developed by the GIE (Group of Educational Innovation) “Pensamiento Matemático” of the Polytechnics University of Madrid (UPM), in order to bring secondary students and university students closer to Mathematics. It deals with the development of a virtual board game called Mate-trivial. The mechanics of the game is to win points by going around the board which consists of four types of squares identified by colours: “Statistics and Probability”, “Calculus and Analysis”, “Algebra and Geometry” and “Arithmetic and Number Theory ”. When landing on a square, a question of its category is set out: a correct answer wins 200 points, if wrong it loses 100 points, and not answering causes no effect on the points, but all the same, two minutes out of the 20 minutes that each game lasts are lost. For the game to be over it is necessary, before those 20 minutes run out, to reach the central square and succeed in the final task: four chained questions, one of each type, which must be all answered correctly. It is possible to choose between two levels to play: Level 1, for pre-university students and Level 2 for university students. A prototype of the game is available at the website “Aula de Pensamiento Matemático” developed by the GIE: http://innovacioneducativa.upm.es/pensamientomatematico/. This activity lies within a set of didactic actions which the GIE is developing in the framework of the project “Collaborative Strategies between University and Secondary School Education for the teaching and learning of Mathematics: An Application to solve problems while playing”, a transversal project financed by the UPM

Wine contains polyphenols that are responsible for its quality. Moreover, phenolic compounds have antioxidant properties and benefits on human health. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was the first electrochemical method used for polyphenols characterization and determination of polyphenols content in wine products. Electrochemical behaviour of standard solutions of phenolic compounds has been investigated and evaluated the importance of the phenolic concentration and pH. The electrochemical parameters extracted from the voltammograms have been correlated with the antioxidant potential in wine products. In addition, CV allowed establishing differences in the antioxidant activity of wines with different addition of grape seeds. In winemaking by-products, different Ipa and Q500 values were found depending on the state of maturation of the grape pomace. On the other hand, the total flavonoids and phenolic acids contents were significantly correlated to the electrochemical parameters. Differences for the electrochemical parameters were found between by-products, being pomace and seeds which presented the greatest values of Q500. Simple regression analyses showed that voltammetric parameters are correlated to their values of lipid peroxidation inhibition by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances method. Our results open the possibility of CV as a promising technique to estimate the global antioxidant potential of wine products rich in phenolic compounds

Finalmente, recogemos una serie de implicaciones de carácter práctico para directivos y reguladores públicos.ABSTRACTWe analyze the influence of the firms' internationalization process of firms on the adoption of a proactive environmental strategy. Using direct interviews with the CEOs of 103 export Spanish firms from the food industry, we show that a high degree of international diversification encourages these firms to take advantage of different environmental competitive advantages from the different regions where they operate. In addition, firms' international experience contributes to acquiring valuable environmental capabilities. Thus, our results support that internationalization leads firms to develop an advanced posture to environmental issues and adopt a proactive environmental strategy. Our paper discusses implications for managers and policy-makers

The influence of adding seeds from grape pomace during Syrah wine fermentation in a warm climate has been studied. Seeds of Pedro Ximenez variety were rich in phenolic compounds, mainly flavonoids such as catechin and procyanidins. Changes in total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity of red wines were observed. These changes depended on the vinification stage and the amount of seeds (SW: 450 g or DW: 900 g seeds/150 kg grapes) applied. In general, antioxidant activity was greater when a simple dose (SW) was considered. Results indicate that seeds rich in flavonoids could be used as wine additives, which could improve the antioxidant potential of red wines in a warm climate.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad AGL2014-58486-C2-2-

An SDP approach for multiperiod mixed 0-1 linear programming models with stochastic dominance constraints for risk management *

Abstract In this paper we consider multiperiod mixed 0-1 linear programming models under uncertainty. We propose a risk averse strategy using stochastic dominance constraints (SDC) induced by mixed-integer linear recourse as the risk measure. The SDC strategy extends the existing literature to the multistage case and includes both first-order and second-order constraints. We propose a stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) solution approach, where one has to overcome the negative impact the cross-scenario constraints, due to SDC, have on the decomposability of the model. In our computational experience we compare our SDP against a commercial optimization package, in terms of solution accuracy and elapsed time. We use supply chain planning instances, where procurement, production, inventory, and distribution decisions need to be made under demand uncertainty. We confirm the hardness of the testbed, where the benchmark cannot find a feasible solution for half of the test instances while we always find one, and show the appealing tradeoff of SDP, in terms of solution accuracy and elapsed time, when solving medium-to-large instances

Identifying the most suitable endogenous control for determining gene expression in hearts from organ donors

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) is a useful tool for assessing gene expression in different tissues, but the choice of adequate controls is critical to normalise the results, thereby avoiding differences and maximizing sensitivity and accuracy. So far, many genes have been used as a single reference gene, without having previously verified their value as controls. This practice can lead to incorrect conclusions and recent evidence indicates a need to use the geometric mean of data from several control genes. Here, we identified an appropriate set of genes to be used as an endogenous reference for quantifying gene expression in human heart tissue.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Our findings indicate that out of ten commonly used reference genes (<it>GADPH, PPIA, ACTB, YWHAZ, RRN18S, B2M, UBC, TBP, RPLP and HPRT</it>), <it>PPIA</it>, <it>RPLP </it>and <it>GADPH </it>show the most stable gene transcription levels in left ventricle specimens obtained from organ donors, as assessed using geNorm and Normfinder software. The expression of <it>TBP </it>was found to be highly regulated.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We propose the use of <it>PPIA</it>, <it>RPLP </it>and <it>GADPH </it>as reference genes for the accurate normalisation of qRT-PCR performed on heart tissue. <it>TBP </it>should not be used as a control in this type of tissue.</p
