    It’s driving her mad: gender differences in the effects of commuting on psychological well-being

    In this paper, we seek to explore the effects of commuting time on the psychological well-being of men and women in the UK. We use annual data from the British Household Panel Survey in a fixed effects panel framework that includes variables known to determine well-being, as well as factors which may provide compensation for commuting such as income, job satisfaction and housing quality. Our results show that, even after all these variables are considered, commuting still has an important detrimental effect on the well-being of women, but not men, and this result is robust to numerous different specifications. We explore possible explanations for this gender difference and can find no evidence that it is due to women´s shorter working hours or weaker occupational position. Rather women´s greater sensitivity to commuting time seems to be a result of their larger responsibility for day-to-day household tasks, including childcare

    The author has identified the following significant results. Areas of the coast were selected which have historically shown vulnerability to storm damage. On Assateague Island, there are six such areas: the western tip of Fishing Point; the southern National Park Service parking lot; Smith Hammocks; Fox Hill Level; Little Fox Hill Level; and the northern five kilometers of the island. Comparative analysis of these areas with other data and with large and small scale aerial photographs shows them to be associated with large overwash fans and shoreline cusping. Initial analysis of Landsat imagery and high altitude photography indicates that the areas of high vulnerability are also associated with the angular orientation of the shoreline

    In various statistical-mechanical models the introduction of a metric onto the space of parameters (e.g. the temperature variable, β\beta, and the external field variable, hh, in the case of spin models) gives an alternative perspective on the phase structure. For the one-dimensional Ising model the scalar curvature, R{\cal R}, of this metric can be calculated explicitly in the thermodynamic limit and is found to be R=1+cosh(h)/sinh2(h)+exp(4β){\cal R} = 1 + \cosh (h) / \sqrt{\sinh^2 (h) + \exp (- 4 \beta)}. This is positive definite and, for physical fields and temperatures, diverges only at the zero-temperature, zero-field ``critical point'' of the model. In this note we calculate R{\cal R} for the one-dimensional qq-state Potts model, finding an expression of the form R=A(q,β,h)+B(q,β,h)/η(q,β,h){\cal R} = A(q,\beta,h) + B (q,\beta,h)/\sqrt{\eta(q,\beta,h)}, where η(q,β,h)\eta(q,\beta,h) is the Potts analogue of sinh2(h)+exp(4β)\sinh^2 (h) + \exp (- 4 \beta). This is no longer positive definite, but once again it diverges only at the critical point in the space of real parameters. We remark, however, that a naive analytic continuation to complex field reveals a further divergence in the Ising and Potts curvatures at the Lee-Yang edge.Comment: 9 pages + 4 eps figure

    Shoreline configuration and shoreline dynamics: A mesoscale analysis

    The author has identified the following significant results. Atlantic coast barrier island shorelines are seldom straight, but rather sinuous. These shoreline curvatures range in size from cusps to capes. Significant relationships exist between the orientation of shoreline segments within the larger of these sinuous features and shoreline dynamics, with coefficients ranging up to .9. Orientation of the shoreline segments of Assateague Island (60 km) and the Outer Banks of North Carolina (130 km) was measured from LANDSAT 2 imagery (1:80,000) and high altitude aerial photography (1:120,000). Long term trends in shoreline dynamics were established by mapping shoreline and storm-surge penetration changes

    Modified Laplace transformation method is applied to N component ϕ4\phi^4 theory and the finite temperature problem in the massless limit is re-examined in the large N limit. We perform perturbation expansion of the dressed thermal mass in the massive case to several orders and try the massless approximation with the help of modified Laplace transformation. The contribution with fractional power of the coupling constant is recovered from the truncated massive series. LANDSAT imagery of the southern end of Assateague Island, Virginia, was enlarged to 1:80,000 and compared with high altitude (1:130,000) and low altitude (1:24,000) aerial photography in an attempt to quantify change in land area over a nine month period. Change in area and configuration was found with LANDSAT and low altitude photography. Change in configuration, but no change in area was found with high altitude photography. Due to tidal differences at time of image obtention and lack of baseline data, the accuracy of the LANDSAT measurements could not be determined. They were consistent with the measurements from the low altitude photography

    Persistent pain after caesarean section and its association with maternal anxiety and socioeconomic background

    Background: Pain, both from the surgical site, and from other sources such as musculoskeletal backache, can persist after caesarean section. In this study of a predominantly socially deprived population we have sought to prospectively examine the association between antenatal maternal anxiety and socioeconomic background and the development of persistent pain of all sources after caesarean section. Methods: Demographic details and an anxiety questionnaire were completed by 205 women before elective caesarean section. On the first postoperative day, pain scores were recorded, and at four months patients were asked to complete a Brief Pain Inventory and an Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Score. Results: Of 205 parturients recruited, 186 records were complete at the hospital admission phase and 98 (52.7%) were complete at the four-month follow-up phase. At recruitment, 15.1% reported pain. At four months 41.8% (95% CI 32.1 to 51.6%) reported pain, of whom pain was a new finding in 35.7% (95% CI 26.2 to 45.2%). Antenatal anxiety was not a significant predictor of severity of new pain at four months (P=0.43 for state anxiety, P=0.52 for trait anxiety). However, four-month pain severity did correlate with social deprivation (P=0.011), postnatal depression (P<0.001) and pain at 24 h (P=0.018). Conclusion: Persistent pain from a variety of sources after caesarean section is common. Our findings do not support the use of antenatal anxiety scoring to predict persistent pain in this setting, but suggest that persistent pain is influenced by acute pain, postnatal depression and socioeconomic deprivation
