    Combination of DROOL rules and Protégé knowledge bases in the ONTO-H annotation tool

    ONTO-H is a semi-automatic collaborative tool for the semantic annotation of documents, built as a Protégé 3.0 tab plug-in. Among its multiple functionalities aimed at easing the document annotation process, ONTO-H uses a rule-based system to create cascading annotations out from a single drag and drop operation from a part of a document into an already existing concept or instance of the domain ontology being used for annotation. It also gives support to the detection of name conflicts and instance duplications in the creation of the annotations. The rule system runs on top of the open source rule engine DROOLS and is connected to the domain ontology used for annotation by means of an ad-hoc programmed Java proxy

    Integrating ontologies into the collaborative authoring of learning objects

    Authoring learning material is a multi-disciplinary undertaking where different people can play their role. Any support that can be provided for the collaboration of instructional designers, pedagogues, media designers, and students, among others, is welcome. In particular, metadata annotation of learning objects is an important task within the whole authoring process. This work presents the first resulting products and approaches from the MD2 project, consisting of a service-oriented framework and a tool to support the integrated, ontology-based collaborative annotation of learning objects

    Dynamic Pressure Measurements During Vitrectomy in a Model of the Eye

    Purpose: To accurately evaluate pressure changes during vitrectomy in a rigid model of the vitreous chamber and to test the efficiency of the EVA phacovitrectomy system (Dutch Ophthalmic Research Center) in terms of compensation of intraocular pressure variations. Methods: We tested 23-, 25-, and 27-gauge double-blade vitreous cutters in both vented global pressure control and automatic infusion compensation (AIC) modes in a vitreous chamber model, mimicking the real surgical procedure. Balanced salt solution and artificial vitreous, similar to the real vitreous body, were used. We tested both standard-flow (SF) and high-flow (HF) infusion systems, varying the infusion pressure between 20 and 40 mm Hg. In each experiment, flow rate was also measured. Results: Pressure drop was rapidly and efficiently compensated when 23-and 25-gauge cutters were used in AIC mode, with infusion pressures ranging between 30 and 55 mm Hg. The 27-gauge cutter was less efficient in compensating pressure variations. Pressure fluctuations related to the high-frequency motion of the cutter blade were small compared to the overall pressure variations. The use of the HF infusion system resulted in larger flow rates and lower pressure changes compared to the SF infusion system. Conclusions: Despite the rigid material of the model, the present pressure measurements are in line with previous studies performed on porcine eye. The use of AIC mode compensates intraoperative pressure drops efficiently, with both 23-and 25-gauge cutters. The HF infusion system is more efficient than the SF infusion system. Translational Relevance: The AIC infusion mode efficiently compensates intraopera-tive pressure drops, in both 23-and 25-gauge experimental vitrectomy. The HF infusion system resulted in larger flow rate and lower pressure changes

    Effectiveness of disinfectant treatments for inactivating Piscirickettsia salmonis

    This short communication investigated in vitro differences between commercial disinfectants types (n = 36), doses of application, and time of action in the elimination of Piscirickettsia salmonis, the most important bacterium affecting farmed salmon in Chile. Seven different treatments were examined, including active and inactive chlorine dioxides, glutaraldehyde, hypochlorite disinfectants and detergents, peracetic acid, peroxides and other miscellaneous methods A 3 replicate set of each of the sample groups was stored at 20 °C and 95% relative humidity and retested after 1, 5 and 30 min with varying doses (low, recommended and high doses). Multiple comparison tests were performed for the mean log CFU/ml among different disinfectant types, dose (ppm) and time of exposure (minutes) on the reduction of P. salmonis. Overall, disinfection using peracetic acid, peroxides, and both active and inactive chlorine dioxides caused significantly higher reduction of >7.5 log CFU/ml in samples, compared to other tested sanitizers. The lowest reduction was obtained after disinfection with hypochlorite detergents. As expected, as doses and time of action increase, there was a significant reduction of the overall counts of P. salmonis. However, at lowest doses, only use of paracetic acids resulted in zero counts. Implementation of effective protocols, making use of adequate disinfectants, may enhance biosecurity, and ultimately, mitigate the impact of P. salmonis in farmed salmon

    Do software models based on the UML aid in source-code comprehensibility? Aggregating evidence from 12 controlled experiments

    In this paper, we present the results of long-term research conducted in order to study the contribution made by software models based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML) to the comprehensibility of Java source-code deprived of comments. We have conducted 12 controlled experiments in different experimental contexts and on different sites with participants with different levels of expertise (i.e., Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD students and software practitioners from Italy and Spain). A total of 333 observations were obtained from these experiments. The UML models in our experiments were those produced in the analysis and design phases. The models produced in the analysis phase were created with the objective of abstracting the environment in which the software will work (i.e., the problem domain), while those produced in the design phase were created with the goal of abstracting implementation aspects of the software (i.e., the solution/application domain). Source-code comprehensibility was assessed with regard to correctness of understanding, time taken to accomplish the comprehension tasks, and efficiency as regards accomplishing those tasks. In order to study the global effect of UML models on source-code comprehensibility, we aggregated results from the individual experiments using a meta-analysis. We made every effort to account for the heterogeneity of our experiments when aggregating the results obtained from them. The overall results suggest that the use of UML models affects the comprehensibility of source-code, when it is deprived of comments. Indeed, models produced in the analysis phase might reduce source-code comprehensibility, while increasing the time taken to complete comprehension tasks. That is, browsing source code and this kind of models together negatively impacts on the time taken to complete comprehension tasks without having a positive effect on the comprehensibility of source code. One plausible justification for this is that the UML models produced in the analysis phase focus on the problem domain. That is, models produced in the analysis phase say nothing about source code and there should be no expectation that they would, in any way, be beneficial to comprehensibility. On the other hand, UML models produced in the design phase improve source-code comprehensibility. One possible justification for this result is that models produced in the design phase are more focused on implementation details. Therefore, although the participants had more material to read and browse, this additional effort was paid back in the form of an improved comprehension of source code

    The effect of air pollution on children’s health: a comparative study between La Plata and Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina

    We present the results of a study of outdoor air quality in two comparable regions of Buenos Aires province (Argentina), La Plata and Bahía Blanca, developed jointly by researchers of National University in both cities, and of the Hospital of Bahía Blanca, between 2009 and 2011. Both regions are characterized by a large petrochemical complex and a village with outstanding traffic. In this study, we measure levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter suspended in air (PM) in air outdoor and affectation of respiratory system in children between 6 and 12 years. Also, analysis of the effect of the air pollution exposure was done thought the calculation of potentially increased life time cancer risk (LCR) in children. In both regions, including three areas: urban, industrial and residential (reference area), 20 VOCs were sampled by passive monitoring (3M 3500), and determined by GC/FID, comprising n-alkanes, cycloalkanes, aromatics, chlorinated compounds, terpenoids and ketones; particulate matter (PM10) was token using a low flow sampler MiniVol TAS, and spirometry were performed, using a portable spirometer. The collected data show higher levels of PM10 in Bahía Blanca, both in the industrial zone and urban areas, industrial area of Bahía Blanca with very bad air quality, associable with a 5% increased in mortality. The levels of total VOCs found in the residential area for both regions are comparable.     Dysfunctional dopaminergic neurotransmission in asocial BTBR mice

    Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by pronounced social and communication deficits and stereotyped behaviours. Recent psychosocial and neuroimaging studies have highlighted reward-processing deficits and reduced dopamine (DA) mesolimbic circuit reactivity in ASD patients. However, the neurobiological and molecular determinants of these deficits remain undetermined. Mouse models recapitulating ASD-like phenotypes could help generate hypotheses about the origin and neurophysiological underpinnings of clinically relevant traits. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), behavioural and molecular readouts to probe dopamine neurotransmission responsivity in BTBR T+ Itpr3tf/J mice (BTBR), an inbred mouse line widely used to model ASD-like symptoms owing to its robust social and communication deficits, and high level of repetitive stereotyped behaviours. C57BL/6J (B6) mice were used as normosocial reference comparators. DA reuptake inhibition with GBR 12909 produced significant striatal DA release in both strains, but failed to elicit fMRI activation in widespread forebrain areas of BTBR mice, including mesolimbic reward and striatal terminals. In addition, BTBR mice exhibited no appreciable motor responses to GBR 12909. DA D1 receptor-dependent behavioural and signalling responses were found to be unaltered in BTBR mice, whereas dramatic reductions in pre- and postsynaptic DA D2 and adenosine A2A receptor function was observed in these animals. Overall these results document profoundly compromised DA D2-mediated neurotransmission in BTBR mice, a finding that is likely to have a role in the distinctive social and behavioural deficits exhibited by these mice. Our results call for a deeper investigation of the role of dopaminergic dysfunction in mouse lines exhibiting ASD-like phenotypes, and possibly in ASD patient populations

    Pretransplantation 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography scan predicts outcome in patients with recurrent Hodgkin lymphoma or aggressive non-hodgkin lymphoma undergoing reduced-intensity conditioning follone by allogeneic stem cell transplantation

    Background: The use of positron emission tomography (PET) scanning in Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma (HG-NHL) has recognized prognostic value in patients who are receiving chemotherapy or undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation (SCT). In contrast, the role of PET before reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) and followed by allogeneic SCT has not been investigated to date. Methods: PET was used to assess 80 patients who had chemosensitive disease (34 patients with HG-NHL and 46 patients with HL) before they underwent allogeneic SCT: 42 patients had negative PET studies, and 38 patients had positive PET studies. Patients underwent allograft from matched related siblings (n = 41) or alternative donors (n = 39). Results: At the time of the last follow-up, 48 patients were alive (60%), and 32 had died. The 3-year cumulative incidence of nonrecurrence mortality and disease recurrence was 17% and 40%, respectively. The cumulative incidence of disease recurrence was significantly lower in the PET-negative patients (25% vs 56%; P =.007), but there was no significant difference between the patients with or without chronic graft-versus-host disease (P =.400). The patients who had negative PET studies before undergoing allogenic SCT also had significantly better outcomes in terms of 3-year overall survival (76% vs 33%; P =.001) and 3-year progression-free survival (73% vs 31%; P =.001). On multivariate analysis, overall survival was influenced by PET status (hazard ratio [HR], 3.35), performance status (HR, 5.15), and type of donor (HR, 6.26 for haploidentical vs sibling; HR, 1.94 for matched unrelated donor vs sibling). Conclusions: The current results indicated that PET scanning appears to be an accurate tool for assessing prognosis in patients who are eligible for RIC allografting
