Mod/Resc Parsimony Inference
We address in this paper a new computational biology problem that aims at
understanding a mechanism that could potentially be used to genetically
manipulate natural insect populations infected by inherited, intra-cellular
parasitic bacteria. In this problem, that we denote by \textsc{Mod/Resc
Parsimony Inference}, we are given a boolean matrix and the goal is to find two
other boolean matrices with a minimum number of columns such that an
appropriately defined operation on these matrices gives back the input. We show
that this is formally equivalent to the \textsc{Bipartite Biclique Edge Cover}
problem and derive some complexity results for our problem using this
equivalence. We provide a new, fixed-parameter tractability approach for
solving both that slightly improves upon a previously published algorithm for
the \textsc{Bipartite Biclique Edge Cover}. Finally, we present experimental
results where we applied some of our techniques to a real-life data set.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Exchange and Correlation Kernels at the Resonance Frequency -- Implications for Excitation Energies in Density-Functional Theory
Specific matrix elements of exchange and correlation kernels in
time-dependent density-functional theory are computed. The knowledge of these
matrix elements not only constraints approximate time-dependent functionals,
but also allows to link different practical approaches to excited states,
either based on density-functional theory, or on many-body perturbation theory,

Correlation energies of inhomogeneous many-electron systems
We generalize the uniform-gas correlation energy formalism of Singwi, Tosi,
Land and Sjolander to the case of an arbitrary inhomogeneous many-particle
system. For jellium slabs of finite thickness with a self-consistent LDA
groundstate Kohn-Sham potential as input, our numerical results for the
correlation energy agree well with diffusion Monte Carlo results. For a helium
atom we also obtain a good correlation energy.Comment: 4 pages,1 figur
Center of mass and relative motion in time dependent density functional theory
It is shown that the exchange-correlation part of the action functional
in time-dependent density functional theory , where
is the time-dependent density, is invariant under the
transformation to an accelerated frame of reference , where is an arbitrary
function of time. This invariance implies that the exchange-correlation
potential in the Kohn-Sham equation transforms in the following manner:
. Some of the
approximate formulas that have been proposed for satisfy this exact
transformation property, others do not. Those which transform in the correct
manner automatically satisfy the ``harmonic potential theorem", i.e. the
separation of the center of mass motion for a system of interacting particles
in the presence of a harmonic external potential. A general method to generate
functionals which possess the correct symmetry is proposed
The costs of reproduction in female columbian ground squirrels
The cost of reproduction for female Columbian ground squirrels was assessed using seven years of data from three populations in southwestern Alberta, Canada. Short-term costs, measured as reduced survival or lowered subsequent fecundity, were not directly associated with whether a female reproduced or not, nor with the females' litter size. In one of the populations, females that first reproduced as yearlings had slightly shorter lifespans, but almost 1.5 times the lifetime reproductive success, compared to those that first reproduced when older. Although short-term reproductive costs were not apparent from our data, we cannot conclude that reproduction was not costly. Such costs might exist but be masked by females' adjusting reproductive investment to their body condition. Whole genome sequencing of experimental hybrids supports meiosis-like sexual recombination in Leishmania
Hybrid genotypes have been repeatedly described among natural isolates of Leishmania, and the recovery of experimental hybrids from sand flies co-infected with different strains or species of Leishmania has formally demonstrated that members of the genus possess the machinery for genetic exchange. As neither gamete stages nor cell fusion events have been directly observed during parasite development in the vector, we have relied on a classical genetic analysis to determine if Leishmania has a true sexual cycle. Here, we used whole genome sequencing to follow the chromosomal inheritance patterns of experimental hybrids generated within and between different strains of L. major and L. infantum. We also generated and sequenced the first experimental hybrids in L. tropica. We found that in each case the parental somy and allele contributions matched the inheritance patterns expected under meiosis 97–99% of the time. The hybrids were equivalent to F1 progeny, heterozygous throughout most of the genome for the markers that were homozygous and different between the parents. Rare, non-Mendelian patterns of chromosomal inheritance were observed, including a gain or loss of somy, and loss of heterozygosity, that likely arose during meiosis or during mitotic divisions of the progeny clones in the fly or culture. While the interspecies hybrids appeared to be sterile, the intraspecies hybrids were able to produce backcross and outcross progeny. Analysis of 5 backcross and outcross progeny clones generated from an L. major F1 hybrid, as well as 17 progeny clones generated from backcrosses involving a natural hybrid of L. tropica, revealed genome wide patterns of recombination, demonstrating that classical crossing over occurs at meiosis, and allowed us to construct the first physical and genetic maps in Leishmania. Altogether, the findings provide strong evidence for meiosis-like sexual recombination in Leishmania, presenting clear opportunities for forward genetic analysis and positional cloning of important genes.</div
Hydrodynamic theory of an electron gas
The generalised hydrodynamic theory of an electron gas, which does not rely
on an assumption of a local equilibrium, is derived as the long-wave limit of a
kinetic equation. Apart from the common hydrodynamics variables the theory
includes the tensor fields of the higher moments of the distribution function.
In contrast to the Bloch hydrodynamics, the theory leads to the correct plasmon
dispersion and in the low frequency limit recovers the Navies-Stocks
hydrodynamics. The linear approximation to the generalised hydrodynamics is

Dynamics of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in an Anharmonic Trap
We present a theoretical model to describe the dynamics of Bose-Einstein
condensates in anharmonic trapping potentials. To first approximation the
center-of-mass motion is separated from the internal condensate dynamics and
the problem is reduced to the well known scaling solutions for the Thomas-Fermi
radii. We discuss the validity of this approach and analyze the model for an
anharmonic waveguide geometry which was recently realized in an experiment
\cite{Ott2002c}
A Model of Vertical Oligopolistic Competition
This paper develops a model of successive oligopolies with endogenous market entry, allowing for varying degrees of product differentiation and entry costs in both markets. Our analysis shows that the downstream conditions dominate the overall profitability of the two-tier structure while
the upstream conditions mainly affect the distribution of profits. We compare the welfare effects of upstream versus downstream deregulation policies and show that the impact of deregulation may be overvalued when ignoring feedback effects from the other market. Furthermore, we analyze how different forms of vertical restraints influence the endogenous market structure and show when they are welfare enhancing
Maximum Mass-Radius Ratios for Charged Compact General Relativistic Objects
Upper limits for the mass-radius ratio and total charge are derived for
stable charged general relativistic matter distributions. For charged compact
objects the mass-radius ratio exceeds the value 4/9 corresponding to neutral
stars. General restrictions for the redshift and total energy (including the
