On the dual graph of Cohen-Macaulay algebras

    Get PDF
Given a projective algebraic set X, its dual graph G(X) is the graph whose vertices are the irreducible components of X and whose edges connect components that intersect in codimension one. Hartshorne's connectedness theorem says that if (the coordinate ring of) X is Cohen-Macaulay, then G(X) is connected. We present two quantitative variants of Hartshorne's result: 1) If X is a Gorenstein subspace arrangement, then G(X) is r-connected, where r is the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of X. (The bound is best possible; for coordinate arrangements, it yields an algebraic extension of Balinski's theorem for simplicial polytopes.) 2) If X is a canonically embedded arrangement of lines no three of which meet in the same point, then the diameter of the graph G(X) is not larger than the codimension of X. (The bound is sharp; for coordinate arrangements, it yields an algebraic expansion on the recent combinatorial result that the Hirsch conjecture holds for flag normal simplicial complexes.)Comment: Minor changes throughout, Remark 4.1 expanded, to appear in IMR

Adivasis (Original Dwellers) “in the way of” State-Corporate Development: Development dispossession and learning in social action for land and forests in India

This paper traces the kinds of learning engendered through Adivasi trans-local and local subaltern social movement (SSM) action addressing state-corporate developmental collusions, state-caste interests and the resulting dispossession of Adivasis from land, forest and their ways of life given the economic liberalization drive to exploit resources in the rural hinterlands in India since 1991.

Gendered-Caste Discrimination, Human Rights Education, and the Enforcement of the Prevention of Atrocities Act in India

Despite the constitutional ban on the practice of untouchability and caste-based discrimination, this article elaborates on a gendered-caste-based discriminatory reality in rural India, the difficulties of enforcing legal remedies, and on related human rights praxis to address gendered-caste atrocities by drawing on the experiences of a Canadian voluntary development nongovernmental organization (NGO) that has been working with Dalits (downtrodden/scheduled caste groups) in India for over a decade. This experience suggests that although there is a significant role for human rights education in addressing gendered-caste atrocities, there are cultural and political limits to a rights-based approach that privilege the individual and a politics of vocal, open democratic resistance.

Subaltern Social Movement Learning and the Decolonization of Space in India

Part of a special issue on international perspectives on education and decolonization. A study examined subaltern agency as expressed through social movement learning and decolonization of physical/material space in south Orissa, India. Results revealed how learning within Adivasi—original dweller—movements in south Orissa framed a process of Adivasi activism that reasserted itself over forest and land spaces necessary for reproducing Adivasi lives in accordance with their material and existential rationalizations

Weighted Composition Operators on Analytic Function Spaces: Some Recent Progress

    Get PDF
Theory of Composition Operators is a steady point of interest for almost 100 years. While studying these operators, our general goal is to describe their operator theoretic properties in terms of the associated function symbols. In this talk, I will discuss some recent results concerning linear combinations (sums, differences, etc.) of weighted composition operators in certain spaces of Analytic functions

This study takes a refreshing look at IT outsourcing from a vendor\u27s perspective and discusses best practices required to effectively manage offshore business needs and offshoring effectiveness. We have conducted a detailed investigation to learn why outsourcing ventures fail, how to effectively measure up to service provider capability, and how to deliver strategic value to the end customer. Extant literature does not talk about the vendor\u27s issues and problems in outsourcing, and our investigation emphasized the vendor\u27s perspective on offshoring strategy and offshore resource effectiveness as the two important differentiators in a make-or-buy decision. Measurement metrics for each of the two items were devised to estimate their effect on offshoring effectiveness. We spoke to some of the top 10 IT vendors in India, collected offshoring data from both clients and vendors, and used the data to validate our decision framework. The framework helps us to investigate current industry practices in IT outsourcing, identify issues and problems beyond the obvious advantages of outsourcing, and propose measures to assess offshoring effectiveness. The investigation gave us an opportunity to record the best IT practices as well as suggest possible improvements in the service or product delivery cycle to enhance customer experience

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this article consists in discussing the idea of moral responsibility in Abraham’s case as it is put forward in Fear and Trembling. With this idea in mind, the notion of ethical heteronomy that the author defends is opposed to kantian ethical autonomy. From this viewpoint, religious sacrifice not only cannot but also must not be ethically justified. The discussion is developed considering Kierkegaard’s ideas from the perspective of different contemporary ethical theories

Christianity understands reality on the basis of the application of a triadic scheme expressed in its philosophical anthropology, which defines the human being in terms of the relation between body, soul and spirit. Nineteenth century German philosophy, especially the work of Hegel, appropriates this theoretical scheme in the context of a speculative metaphysics. Kierkegaard and Marx discuss the ultimate basis of this metaphysics, the former emphasising the spiritual aspect and the latter the natural. In this paper we address the relation between spirit and nature around 1840, with the aim of demonstrating the spiritual character of the theoretical proposal of the Danish thinker and the materialist project of the young Marx, which will lead each of them to describe the malaise of bourgeois society from different analytical perspectives, religious and political respectively. To carry out this investigation we take as our starting point The concept of anxiety.Fil: Dip, Patricia Carina. Universidad de Buenos Aires; Argentina.
