    This Article reviews and addresses some of the problems concerning adequate capital to develop patented inventions and products, and inhibiting the widespread use of patents to raise financing. The Article divides the IP finance market into three separate, but interrelated markets and analyzes problems, including U.S. patent-eligible subject matter doctrine, within those markets impeding patent backed financing. The Article provides numerous proposals, some of which are in the literature, and calls for additional research for addressing the issues

    Follows.El principal objetivo del presente estudio es investigar la producción de hierro en España durante el período islámico (711-1492), con la intención de establecer el primer marco teórico con respecto a la organización y el desarrollo de esta industria. No se había emprendido previamente ninguna investigación profundizada de la industria férrea andalusí. Un importante propósito de este trabajo es evaluar anteriores especulaciones en relación con ciertos aspectos del tema en discusión. Referencias tempranas relacionadas con los recursos de mineral de hierro y los sitios de producción férrea en la España islámica son examinadas y evaluadas. Se mencionan vestigios metalúrgicosandalusíes derivados de la explotación y fundición de hierro anteriormente publicados. Se examina la significación de al-Andalus en el comercio internacional de hierro y acero. Ernest MintonIt has been well documented that omega-3 PUFA (n-3 PUFA) can confer a wide variety of health benefits to humans and animals. The current study was designed to evaluate the ability of n-3 PUFA to modulate the innate immune response in two diverse breeds of horses. Ten Quarter Horse and 10 American Miniature Horse mares were assigned to either an n-3 PUFA supplemented or control diet (5 full-sized and 5 miniature mares/treatment) for 56 d. The treatment diet was designed to deliver 64.4 mg/kg BW combined eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) daily. Whole blood (20 mL) was collected via jugular veinipuncture into heparinized tubes on 0 d, 28 d, and 56 d. Serum PUFA analysis was conducted by gas chromatography. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha) in response to toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands lipopolysaccharide (LPS), flagellin, and lipoteichoic acid (LTA) was estimated using an equine-specific ELISA. Peripheral blood samples from d 56 were also analyzed for total and differential leukocyte counts and subjected to flow cytometric analysis. Body type did not affect basal or TLR stimulated TNFα production. Serum PUFA analysis revealed a decrease in linoleic acid (LA) and substantial increases in arachidonic acid (ARA), EPA, DHA, and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) at both d 28 and 56 in horses fed n-3 PUFA (P less than 0.0001 for all). Dietary n-3 PUFA supplementation reduced (P less than 0.05) un-stimulated basal, but not TLR stimulated TNFalpha production by PBMC’s. Supplementation with n-3 PUFA did not affect total or differential leukocyte counts, nor selected cell surface markers. These results suggest that n-3 PUFA supplementation in the horse can modify circulating PUFA and alter the inflammatory response by reducing basal TNFalpha production. Furthermore, under conditions of the current study and considering the endpoints evaluated, the American Miniature Horse could potentially be used as a model for full-sized horse breeds

    Local landscape effects on population dynamics of Ixodes ricinus

    Ixodes ricinus, a common tick in Europe, transmits severe tickborne pathogens (TBPs). In Sweden, both prevalence and incidence of tick-borne infections have increased during the last few decades, and a majority of the cases is reported from the area around Stockholm. Among ticks, transmission of TBPs involves co-feeding of susceptible larvae or nymphs with infected ticks on the same host. Seasonal synchrony of immature stages and total tick abundance are important factors for the probability of horizontal transmission of TBPs. We have studied the association between local landscape characteristics and population dynamics and the probability of co-occurrence of different life cycle stages of I. ricinus at different locations south of Stockholm, Sweden. We found significant spatiotemporal variation in tick activity patterns. Mean tick abundance varied with a tenfold difference among study sites. The probability of co-occurrence of larvae, nymphs and female adults was highest in June and decreased significantly with vegetation height. In addition, the amount of forest habitat and open water in the surrounding landscape of the study sites expressed significant negative effects on tick abundance and co-occurrence, indicating that environmental heterogeneity may increase the likelihood of good rodent habitats, which in turn, are suitable hosts for immature ticks

    Deep sequencing analysis of tick-borne encephalitis virus from questing ticks at natural foci reveals similarities between quasispecies pools of the virus

    Every year, tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) causes severe central nervous system infection in 10 000 to 15 000 people in Europe and Asia. TBEV is maintained in the environment by an enzootic cycle that requires a tick vector and a vertebrate host, and the adaptation of TBEV to vertebrate and invertebrate environments is essential for TBEV persistence in nature. This adaptation is facilitated by the error-prone nature of the virus's RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, which generates genetically distinct virus variants called quasispecies. TBEV shows a focal geographical distribution pattern where each focus represents a TBEV hotspot. Here, we sequenced and characterized two TBEV genomes, JP-296 and JP-554, from questing Ixodes ricinus ticks at a TBEV focus in central Sweden. Phylogenetic analysis showed geographical clustering among the newly sequenced strains and three previously sequenced Scandinavian strains, Toro-2003, Saringe-2009 and Mandal-2009, which originated from the same ancestor. Among these five Scandinavian TBEV strains, only Mandal-2009 showed a large deletion within the 3' non-coding region (NCR), similar to the highly virulent TBEV strain Hypr. Deep sequencing of JP-296, JP-554 and Mandal-2009 revealed significantly high quasispecies diversity for JP-296 and JP-554, with intact 3' NCRs, compared to the low diversity in Mandal-2009, with a truncated 3' NCR. Single-nucleotide polymorphism analysis showed that 40% of the single-nucleotide polymorphisms were common between quasispecies populations of JP-296 and JP-554, indicating a putative mechanism for how TBEV persists and is maintained within its natural foci
