    Transverse Profile Monitor using Ion Probe Beams

    A profile monitor is described that makes use of a low-intensity and low-energy ion beam to measure the transverse profile of a dense proton beam of small dimensions. Three tehcniques are considered based on the use of ion beams having a pencil, curtain, or cylindrical shape. The detector is almost non-interceptive for the proton beam and does not introduce disturbances in the machine environment.     Fragmentation of Molecules by Fast Ion Impact

    Single ionization of simple molecules, e.g. H2, CO2, by fast charged particle impact has been studied using a reaction microscope. By measuring the momenta of the emitted electron and the recoil ionic fragment in coincidence, channel-selective low-energy electron spectra have been recorded. The experimental cross sections will be presented, compared with the predictions of state-of-the-art CDW-EIS calculations and discussed in terms of molecular effects such as (i) autoionization and predissociation channels, (ii) interference patterns resulting from the two-center geometry of the diatomic molecule, in analogy to Young\u27s double-slit experiment and (iii) dependence of the electron emission on the orientation of the molecular axis

    Translational research in pituitary tumours

    Although effective treatment regimens (surgical resection, drug treatment with dopamine agonists or somatostatin analogues, radiotherapy) have been established for the therapy of most pituitary tumours, a considerable proportion of affected patients cannot completely cured due to incomplete resection or drug resistance. Moreover, even if hormone levels have been normalized, patients with hormone-secreting tumours still show persistent pathophysiological alterations in metabolic, cardiovascular or neuropsychiatric parameters and have an impaired quality of life. In this review reasons for the discrepancy between biochemical cure and incomplete recovery from tumour-associated comorbidities are discussed and the clinical management is delineated exemplarily for patients with acromegaly and Cushing's disease. In view of the development of additional treatment concepts for the treatment of pituitary adenomas we speculate about the relevance of RSUME as a potential target for the development of an anti-angiogenic therapy. Moreover, the role of BMP-4 which stimulates prolactinoma development through the Smad signalling cascade is described and its role as putative drug target for the treatment of prolactinomas is discussed. Regarding the well-known resistance of a part of somatotropinomas to somatostatin analogue treatment, recently identified mechanisms responsible for the drug resistance are summarized and ways to overcome them in future treatment concepts are presented. Concerning novel therapeutic options for patients with Cushing's disease the impact of retinoic acid, which is currently tested in clinical studies, is shown, and the action and putative therapeutic impact of silibinin to resolve glucocorticoid resistance in these patients is critically discussed.Fil: Stalla, Günter K.     Progress at the Heidelberg EBIT

    Two years after the relocation of the Heidelberg EBIT, several experiments are already in operation. Spectroscopic measurements in the optical region have delivered the most precise reported wavelengths for highly charged ions, in the case of the forbidden transitions of Ar XIV and Ar XV. The lifetimes of the metastable levels involved in those transitions has been determined with an error of less than 0.2%. A new, fully automatized x-ray crystal spectrometer allows systematic measurements with very high precision and reproducibility. Absolute measurements of the Lyman series of H-like ions are currently underway. Dielectronic recombination studies have yielded information on rare processes, as two-electron-one photon transitions in Ar16+, or the interference effects between dielectronic and radiative recombination in Hg77+. The apparatus can now operate at electron beam currents of more than 500 mA, and energies up to 100 keV. A further beam energy increase is planned in the near future. Ions can be extracted from the trap and transported to external experiments. Up to 4 x 107 Ar16+ ions per second can be delivered to a 1 cm diameter target at 10 m distance. Charge-exchange experiments with U64+ colliding with a cold He atomic beam have been carried out, as well as experiments aiming at the optimization of the charge state distribution of the extracted via dielectronic recombination. Two new EBITs, currently in advanced state of construction in Heidelberg, will be used for experiments at the VUV free electron laser at TESLA (Hamburg) and for the charge breeding of short-lived radioactive isotopes at the TRIUMF ISAC facility

    First Measurement of the 96^{96}Ru(p,γ\gamma)97^{97}Rh Cross Section for the p-Process with a Storage Ring

    This work presents a direct measurement of the 96^{96}Ru(p,γp, \gamma)97^{97}Rh cross section via a novel technique using a storage ring, which opens opportunities for reaction measurements on unstable nuclei. A proof-of-principle experiment was performed at the storage ring ESR at GSI in Darmstadt, where circulating 96^{96}Ru ions interacted repeatedly with a hydrogen target. The 96^{96}Ru(p,γp, \gamma)97^{97}Rh cross section between 9 and 11 MeV has been determined using two independent normalization methods. As key ingredients in Hauser-Feshbach calculations, the γ\gamma-ray strength function as well as the level density model can be pinned down with the measured (p,γp, \gamma) cross section. Furthermore, the proton optical potential can be optimized after the uncertainties from the γ\gamma-ray strength function and the level density have been removed. As a result, a constrained 96^{96}Ru(p,γp, \gamma)97^{97}Rh reaction rate over a wide temperature range is recommended for pp-process network calculations.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figs, Accepted for publication at PR
